Subject: Garmin 910xt elevation gone insane - or is it the site?

Hi:

Got back from my run:

7K run, 3572 meters elevation gain.

Looking back over previous workouts it seem to have started thursday 10, 320m gain on 800m lap. But the best so far is 1170m run with a wobbing 16850m gain! So, going up doesn't count?

Anyway, other people have experienced this? How to solve?

Thanks, Erik

Sure, the two latest, one record breaking 16km climb :P:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/262486721

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/262486742

and another curiousity, the second, a 3572m climb but the elevation curve shows downhill all the way.

I know that some of the fixes in the 2.7 version of the firmware included some things for elevation... perhaps try the update?

my elevation on my 910 has been crazy for about 3-4 weeks now.  Every workout looks like I either climbed Everest or jumped off the top.  I use the elevation correction feature in Garminconnect but that is about all I have been able to do.  I have not checked my firmware in a week or so but the last update I did didn't do anything to help with the issue.

I poked around on the internet and found that the barometer in the 910xt can be pretty wonky for people, with no real fix.

That stinks, but that's always the risk with 1st gen equipment...

If you let the watch just sit out for a few hours, will it acclimatize to the actual altitude? It looks like it is trying to normalize. The hole (I think) for the barometer is on the back near the bottom left screw. Is there anything in there? If so, be careful removing it...I bet canned air would be a bad idea.

Otherwise, try 2.7.0 and if it is still bad, bummer...I guess it is all elevation corrections for you.

I went through Garmin support initially, went through every option until tech told me to send it back for repair/replacement...it should be under warranty but you'll have to give it up for 3 weeks or so...as I bought mine at REI, I just traded it for a replacement.

I had this same problem with my 910xt where everything worked fine and the elevation readings were valid.   Then after about 6 months I started getting completely inaccurate readings for routes I knew like the back of my hand.

I immediately opened a support ticket with Garmin and they had me upgrade my firmware and do a total rest (which loses all your settings....which I hate) and none of that fixed the problem.  This happened to me about 3 weeks before Ironman Wisconsin, so I was a bit panicked.  Luckily Garmin was very responsive and shipped me a new unit the same day which I had in-hand 2 days later.  I sent my old one back and all was covered on warranty.

Apparently the altimeter (or whatever they call it) went bad and the only fix was a full replacement.  Hopefully this isn't a common hardware issue because I would hate to have the same problem come back in a couple months.

The good news is Garmin has awesome support if you need to go that route.
