The Pastor should be completely embarrassed by his actions.  If he wanted to make a point he should have had the courage to say it and not spell it out like he did.

The piece missing from the story is what service he received to drive him to do it of course.

I think I'm most disappointed that he phoned up and demanded she was fired. People do things in the heat of the moment but given the opportunity to reflect and his place in society I can't see how he thought that would reflect well on him and the organisation he represents.

I'd also want proof that he donates his entire salary to a God related charity.....

and we wonder why more and more people distrust religion and leave churches......

I wondered that as well. Apparently there was a large party and they split the check up. Some have said in an effort to avoid the auto gratuity, but I don't think there's any hard evidence that this was the reason.

all these things aside, as a pastor, writing things like "i give god 10% why should i give you 18%" is just shameful.  i don't care if she eventually tipped her or not.  you are called to reflect Christ, and that is NOT a reflection of Him.

She gave an interview where she said it was a party of 5 adults and 5 kids. 

There's a whole lot wrong with the pastor's side of the story.  She claims after she crossed out the $6 tip she still left a $6 cash tip on the table.  She claims she still got charged the auto-tip on her credit card.  And the church she claims to be a pastor at does not exist.  At least, it does not exist at the address she gave.

The church website was up earlier last night, but so many Redditors registered on it, left nasty comments, spammed the email addresses on it, so I am guessing the church administration took it offline.

I don't recall where I heard or read this but,,,,, the pastor was in a large group that did get the auto 18% and was obligated to pay it but scratched it out and paid a lesser amount. Basically theft imo. The restaurant had a policy for groups of x or more that it would be added.

Her "church" had a congration of 15 or so..... the part that sickens me is with this publicity she will probably see an increase in her flock.

If I recall correctly the waitress who posted it was not the waitress who provided the service.

My feelings on this is the pastor is legally a theif and dispicable, the waitress shouldn't have posted it but I don't believe it merits losing their job.

So everyone jumped to conclusions... Like TeaLeaf said, everyone was wrong here.

I once gave 20% tip when I paid for a nice dinner for a group of 12. Then, when I got my cc bill, it had an additional 20% tip.  I called the restaurant and asked what was up with that and they said they automatically add 20%.  So I add 20%, then you add 20%?  That's not right and that is not what the receipt I signed says.  They credited back to the card the extra 20%.  "Most powerful force in the universe- Compounding interest." - Albert Einstein.

What I will say about Pastors is that every one I've dealt with in the last 5 years has made a point of tipping well and saying during their sermon "Make sure if you go out after services, you tip really well.  Everyone sees you saying grace before your meal and if you don't tip well, you make us all look bad."

If I'm wearing my church polo shirt, I tip 20% and then some... writing that stuff was just stupid...

Here's another idea.

Instead of judging vast (well, not vast, however many people have commented here) amounts of people, why not just recognize that there has been one singular broad-brush comment, which might have been a poor choice?

Well I just think they should charge more and pay the wait staff a real wage and not this based on tip wages but that is just me. 

I understand the auto gratuity with a large group because I find it difficult sometimes in a large group to sometimes come up with the money.  Too many cheapskates or people walking out and not paying leaving it to the group. 

As we always say.  If you do not like company policy then do not give them your money.  No one says you have to eat at Applebees.
