It's been a while since I bought a house.  But didn't inspection catch ANY of this?

I'm wondering if the previous owner knew and feels thrilled to unload it or if they were in the dark about it..

Nope.  Without opening up walls it's hard to catch stuff like this.  The saving grace is that the termite company had a warranty o the house for 20 years prior, they did the inspection, gave it the OK, and then signed the warranty over to us.

So they are footing the bill.

I honestly think the prior owner had no idea.

Just knock that wall down between the dining room and your kitchen and voila, nice shiny new space.

That load bearing wall?

The kitchen runs the other way, towards us in that shot along the right wall.  And the real dining room is behind the photographer.  (The old dining room becomes an office)  It'll be pretty open.

Looks like it will end up being gorgeous. And it will have an end. This will all be fodder for a good set of stories.

How's your wife holding up?

We went through a major remodel/build (moved a barn and converted it to a uber green house).  It went way--and I mean WAY--over budget.  It was the most stressful long-term (2.5 years) thing I have experienced.  I really feel your pain, man.  It sucks.

Thank you all.  We love the house and property (about 6.5 acres).

She's holding up fine.  The real test will be having to move out of our old place and into a condo for about 2 months till it's livable.  2.5 years!  Wow.  Now I feel lucky.

I'll keep posting pics as it progresses if you guys want.  Or if you're bored of them tell me and I'll stop.  No hard feelings.

Why don't you go away and never, ever come back.....ever.

Keep us posted on the project. Ever think of contacting HGTV or DIY Network and have them do a reality show on this?

I love the pics and the updates.  I think once you've lived through something like this, it becomes very interesting to you (just like so many things, I guess).

We ended up--totally by accident--breaking ground on the house and having the first day of our new non-profit on the same day.  I really don't recommend that;)  It has worked out, but there were many, many days that I didn't think it would, and thought we were going to lose out a&^!  We started building in 2007, and when the economy tanked, we had some scary days.

I'm glad your wife is OK.  Some of the worst stories I've heard have been mama-meltdown stories.  Do you have kids? Amazingly resilient little stinkers, those guys.

The condo life might not be that bad, actually.  Maybe it will give you guys a chance to purge stuff you don't need?  Though moving twice in two months blows:/  Sorry.

What is SRQ?  Is that Sarasota?

We thought about it at one point but I'm far too busy to deal with a camera crew..

Yes, Sarasota... 2 kids.  11 and 4.  They think it's an adventure.  They're just happy the condo has a pool, the "new" house doesn't have one yet.  Unless you count the large pond out back.

Love the property.  The upside is that now you get to make the house yours.  You can design it however you want and don't have to live with whatever the previous owner's idea of nice was.

Yeah.  We really bought it for the property.  It's really hard to find 6 acres within 10 mins of downtown.  We lucked out all around and I'm certainly not complaining.

It's just a bit stressful and COJ is cheaper than therapy.

Thanks.  Some small bulegill and bass.  Haven't had time to do any real fishing there however.

I'm a total snake-phobe, much to the dismay of my entire herp-loving family.

Serious question--do you have poisonous snakes on your property and what do you do to protect yourself if you go for a walk to the pond or if you're kids are out playing on the acreage?  Is it ever an issue?

My grandparents lived in Sarasota and my dad had a winter home there for many years, and I saw some snakes at both their places--out on the patio by the pool, in the grass, on the ledge to the ICW.  Kinda spooked me.
