Subject: Rookie Tri in May?

Anyone doing this? I signed up and I live in Austin, too (newby to the area). I know the race is at Decker Lake, but I have heard not the best place to OWS unless it's for the tri. I guess I should look up some tri groups in there area, there have to be a ton - this is Austin!

Hey there!

Welcome to Austin and welcome to BT.

I don't know about the Rookie Tri.  I'm looking at CapTexTri though.

For regular swim practice, Deep Eddy Pool is awesome.  It's cold.  But it's free and the hours are really good.

As far as OWS practice, I was thinking of getting a crew together to do a swim in Lake Travis (from Lakeway Marina).  I've gone out there a few times by myself.  I stay on the shore-side of the floating docks so I don't get hit by boats and I could put my feet down on rocks if I needed to.

I'll post a thread in here about OWS if I can get a few people to join up.

I def. needed to start out small which is still BIG to me haha. I am struggling how I am going to do 300m swim/11mile bike and 2mile run all at once. I guess if I like it in May I can look to some summer tri's too. I will look for your post about OWS. If it's a weekend I don't have my kids I would want to do it - guess I need to buy a wetsuit, huh?

Barton Springs pool is also a great place for semi-open water swimming.  I know of several triathletes that train there and I think its free early in the morning (I could be wrong).

Welcome to Austin, Wendy.  I did the Rookie Tri last year.  It was fun.  It's a great one for newbies.

I'm not sure you really need a wetsuit here.  I had one when I moved here, but I've only used it twice.  You can rent them at the shops also.

Pure Austin Quarry Lake has a lake that you can swim in open water if you're a member or don't mind paying the day fee.  I like Deep Eddy and Big Stacy.  Balcones is seasonal, but nice when it opens.

I'm an assistant organizer for the Austin Area Triathlon Meetup Group.  It's free to join and there are beginners and veterans.  We have a monthly social event also.

Let me know if I can help.  Your blog is cute!  I can share some beginner stories with you Wink

Thanks Jackie - I guess I am just thinking since the water might be pretty cold leading up to May and so far I can only do the indoor lap pool.  I do want to get a few outdoor swims under my belt before the actual tri. I will look into all those spots and check out the Tri meet up group I have no idea what to do on race day, what to prepare for, etc. I'm just swimming right now because that is where I need the most help.

I did it last year. It was a really fun race with great beer afterwards. The bike has some nice hills for us Dallas folks.

I am in.  It is short and sweet.  Hope to see everyone there.  I will be wearing my beefteam shirt.  White visor.  The run is weird.  Sort of weeds that were mowed, uneven ground a trail type run.

The rookie is a VERY fast race. Very fun, too. The bike course is challenging because of the hills when I competed in 2011. Thoroughly enjoyed it

Depending on what part of town you are in, you can always do open water swims at Lake Pflugerville as well.  The buoys are usually up year round (unless people have messed with them and the buoy itself has disappeared) for a 500m course.  Once it gets a little warmer, there will be lots of people out there in the evenings and on weekends.

Ok I am in North Austin close to RR so that would be a good location for me, too. I have also thought of maybe doing the Pflugerville Tri in June if I enjoy the rookie. We will see!

Thanks Jackie,

I soo want to do that ride (BSS is almost right across the street from where I live) Unfortunately I will be in Dallas dropping my kids off for spring break week with their dad. I'm on their e-mail list so I def. want to do some rides in the future.  I'm sure it will be a great ride.

Note to self - train on Parmer Saturday morning to see more hot women in lycra.

Pflugerville Lake is a great place to train once it warms up a little.  The Pflugerville Tri is good and actually easier than the Rookie.  It often fills up a month or more out from the event.

If you can, do a training ride on the Rookie course prior to the race (at least drive the course).  There are some decent hills, including one which comes after a 90 degree turn.  Make sure you have your gears in the small chain ring before making the turn or its almost too late.

Wendy,

Sorry for the late notice.  Luke's Locker is having a triathlon night tonight from 6-8 PM.  There is free parking in their garage.

I'll be there for a short while.  I hope you joined the tri meetup group.  Then you'll get notice of these things.

Weather was threatening for the women's ride, but we still had 80+ out there.  Hope to see you on the next one.

We have people from all over in the Austin Area Triathlon Meetup Group.  It's free to join and there are beginners and veterans.  We also swim, ride and run all over the area.   It's a great place to see what events are happening and meet other people from your area.  I'm the same description as you.  I'd be happy to come and swim, ride and run with you or meet you somewhere.

The rookie is a great race, this will be my 3rd year doing it.

I also suggest going to lake PF to get your open water swims in later in the season. Its just great out there.

Pure does have that nice lake behind them, but it costs 10 or 20 a day I forget. Try out one of their splash and dash races later in the season also, those are a blast.

Good luck out there, and welcome to the addiction that is triathlon.

Im doing it just coming off the flu so I will be a little rusty but I am game fun times.  The waiting time for the waves is a little long.  I live in Lakway.  Many good bike rides on Tuesday night and Thrusday nights.  Also, I know Gamesbolt is doing some swims in Lakeway Marina.

Swim at Barton Creek, Zilker park pool 4 laps is one mile, almost "OWS

I feel ya there TXwildcat, I am just getting over cold myself. When I ran last Sunday and Tuesday my lungs let me know that I wasn't 100% yet. Today's run was much better.

Good luck everyone and especially the ROOKIES!
