TriathletePT - 2013-04-03 10:50 AM What are everyone's thoughts about Cersei's fall from power in Book 5? Expected? Disappointed?
Loved it! I was so happy that she finally got caught for all schemes! It was great that she got locked in the tower for so long. Then the naked walk back to the castle. Fabulous! I can't image that anyone reading it felt sorry for her. Just like Jeoffry getting killed. I mean, who could feel sorry for that a-hole? OH! Reminds me... who killed him exactly? They all blame it on the Imp, but it wasn't. Wasn't it Margery's grandmother. Something about one of the stones in Sansa's hair net being poisoned. Right? But WHY did she do it again? She seems like an unlikely character to want to kill Jeoffry. I kind of forgot why. Also, who was Lyanna Stark again? Was she the one that got killed by Lord Balish/Littlefinger? Or someone else? I'm reading the Epilogue at the end of book 5 and Rhaegar looking twice at Lyanna Stark is mentioned.

Lady Tyrell also known as the queen of thorns learned from Sansa Stark that Jeoffry was evil so she killed him to let her daughter Margarey marry Joeffrys little brother Tommen so she could stay the queen. Tommen is known to be a good kid and being younger Margarey could manipulate him farily easy.

Ding Ding.

Lyanna was Ned Stark's Sister, she was betrothed to Robert Baratheon and he loved her dearly.  Rhaegar stole her and married her and then she died somehow (sickness I think).  That's why Robert and Ned went to war against the Mad King, that's how Robert became King.  He took over and Lyanna still died.

Remember Robert visiting her at Winterfell in the very first episode?

That's why he didn't like Cersei and he whored-around.  Lyanna was his one true love and she was taken from him.

ETA- the one Littlefinger killed was Lysa (Katelyn's sister, John Arryn's wife, Lady of the Vale).

This is the books thread man not the show

I read the first 10 chapters of 1, jumped to 3, 4, 5.

Did I mess up Robert and Cersei?

Oh, The books not the show on Robert visiting the crypt at Winterfell.  Right.  My bad.

I LOVED it! Thought he kept to the character very well on her fall. Where in Jamie we see redeaming qualities in his fall and how he deals with it in Cersei we see nothing but evil.

I liked how the author had Jamie's character grow into someone more honorable. I hate that his hand got cut off. But it probably made him a better person in the end.

Think back to Jamie and Tyrion's conversation at Winterfell about Bran.  Jamie said "Give me a good clean death over being a cripple any day."

Tyrion's response was "Speaking for the grotesque, death is so absolutely final whereas life... It's full of possibilities..."

If Jamie hadn't lost his hand he would still be the pompous fool he was throughout the first books.

Interestingly enough on Jamie.  He never really won an actual sword fight with anyone in the story.  He was beaten by Ned Stark until the guard stabbed him in the leg, he didn't compete in the tourney where he became a member of the King's Guard, he loses to Brienne...

Yes, interesting. Didn't realize he didn't win a sword fight.

I agree this season will end on Jeoffry's wedding. Pretty sure the Red wedding will be season 4. Why did Rob have to be so stupid to marry that random girl... WHY? That annoys me to no end.

TriathletePT - 2013-04-03 7:01 AMTotal change of subject, and I'm not 100% sure if I remember everything correctly, but who do you all think the dead guy that led Bran and Hodor around was? Their uncle who got killed? Or just some random Watch person. I read the books from fall of 2011 through last year when the 5th one came out. I'm thinking I might dig re-reading them again already.
I'm loving the series! 1/3 done with book 5 and 1/2 through season 2. I'm thinking it's the uncle as well... feels like it should be someone closely connected to Bran.

But the Red Wedding was before Joffrey's Wedding.  Remember Joffrey was laughing about it when Tyrion entered the room and saw Tywin and Cersei in there.

I think you'll have both.  But maybe for the sake of the show, they'll merge the two to happen at the same time?

I wonder if they'll show Grey Wind's head sewn on Robb Stark's body.  That's so Shakespearean.

Not sure if anyone else has checked this out, but HBO has a really cool site for the show. Which matches up with the book. I have fun looking at the map and clicking on it, reading the information, etc.

Yeah that is nice.  The maps that come with the books are so insufficient.

The houses are identified on there as well.  That and the Wiki of Ice and Fire are the only way to understand everything that is going on.

I'm sort of speed reading this thread as I don't want any spoilers.  But I was planning to get the 5 book set.  I'm a hearing correctly that the story doesn't wrap up by the end of the books?  There are more to come?

PLEASE don't let it be like the Gunslinger books from Stephen King that took like 15 years to finish.

Have you seen this:

http://www.amazon.com/Lands-Ice-Fire-Game-Thrones/dp/0345538544/ref=la_B000APIGH4_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1365011046&sr=1-5

I've only read through book 3, so I can't theorize on that stuff, but, as I brought up in the other thread, I'm siding with the Red Wedding the cut off point.  It is the middle of the book.  It's a decent split between battles between the north and south, it also makes the spot when Ayra leaves the brothers/Thoros (who you don't see again till the epilogue/introduction of zombie Catelyn), and a break between what will Stannis do and him showing up to save the wall.

I think Joffery's wedding either ends 4th season or is the penultimate episode, and the 4th season ends either with Ayra boarding the ship to Braavos or Catelyn's reveal.  OK, the more I think about it, I'd wager on the 2nd - leave the last episode for all those other stories (Ayra, Sansa, Danerys deciding to rule instead of invading) and Tyrion's "trial by combat" and what he does to Tywin.  All that might take two episodes though...

There are 5 books and a 6th one is on the way. But who knows when. I thought I read it took a couple of years between books 4 & 5. Although with the HBO series being reliant on the books there might be more motivation to be quicker.

It was supposed to be a trilogy.  Now it's supposed to be 7 books.  Book 1 was published in 96, so it's already been 17 years, and he's only writing the 6th book now .

He's got the plot worked out to write the 7th book (he told it to the HBO guys in case he dies before finishing it), but it seems to take him about 5 years to write each book (#3 in 2000, #4 in 05, #5 in 11)

Bah...  Guess it's good that I start now...

I just looked it up.  The first Gunslinger book was 1982 and the last was 2004!  And Stephen King almost DID die with the hit and run...

For a time, I thought that was the best series of books ever written.  Amazing storyline.  I don't think of it quite as fondly as I did, but it's still good.  I may read the series again.  I was a bit disappointed with the ending.  It was thought provoking, but left me wanting...

He has said he is shooting for end of 2014 beginning of 2015. I read somewhere that book 6 will be at least 1400 pages and he has 600 done and 200 more hes smothing out.

I thought Aegon was fireproof.  Didn't he try to steal the dragons, or am I confusing something here?

Regarding the horns - My theory is that the obsidian horn is for the white walkers.  It could be for the wall, but I bet it will be a WMD for the walkers.  Obsidian blades kill the white walkers.

Now the dragon horn, I think it has something to do with Dragonstone.  It might awaken the massive stone dragons at the castle.  Does anyone remember what was said about the existence of dragons still at Dragonstone?  Was it Stannis, or someone else?

I'm really looking forward to Arya's storyline with the Faceless Men in the show. Curious to see how they are going to make all of that work out.

I think the show will be better for season 4 than the book was. Book 4 bummed me out b/c I wanted to know what was going on with Jon and we just got more new characters and new places. The other seasons of the show won't be able to hold a candle to the books though.

Back to the story.  I think the most satisfying thing i've read thus far has got to be Tyrion finally killing Tywin on the crapper.  That and shooting "Shae the funny wh-re" after she helped to convict him...

Yes! IMO A storm of swords was the best book with soooo many great parts but the best line of all time is:

"Lord Tywin Lannister in the end did not sh1t gold"

Bah, I can't remember the details anymore....

Was the broken horn made of obsidian, or just found with the knives and arrowheads?

The horn was auroch’s horn and was found with obsidian wraped in a knights watch cloak.

dork

yep.

That's name calling... Banned for a month!!!

Back to the story.  I think the most satisfying thing i've read thus far has got to be Tyrion finally killing Tywin on the crapper.  That and shooting "Shae the funny wh-re" after she helped to convict him...

Not if he agrees.

I have had my finger over the "buy now" button on Kindle for the 5 book set.  I just need to finish up studying over the next couple weeks or I will be distracted.
