Pre-race routine:

First timer. Really cold outside. 38 degrees w/ 10-15 mph wind from the south. Tried to stay relaxed and figure out where everything was. Fairly easy and finished in the transition area.
Event warmup:

Went for a brisk short walk before stripping down for the indoor swim.
Swim

  • 437 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

This rank is for 173 males. Proud of my swim. Took off easy. Starts were every 15 seconds. I had 3 people pass me and I passed 2. !!!Swam freestyle the entire swim. I have never done that before. Proud of my pace and the endurance I have build up. This gives me confidence to extend my workouts.
What would you do differently?:

Swim through the egress area where I waded.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

The mount line was 150 yards of concrete from the transition area. It was very cold with wind. I dried off; pulled on my helmet and a wind stopper jacket; picked up my shoes and ran my bike through the mount line about 10 yards. Then I went to the side pulled on my shoes and got started. I was afraid of running that distance on concrete with my bike shoes.

Comments:

This rank is for 173 males. Pushed to get up the big first hill and this may have taken it out of my legs. Don't know anything else I could have done.

Comments:

Pretty good
Run
  • 18m 51s

Comments:

Coming off the course I felt it was bad, but I averaged 9:26 miles which is good. I can't be unhappy with this.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm old.

Event comments:

This is my first, but I enjoyed it and finished.

Course: Winner of the tri averaged less than 20 mph. Very difficult course. In first mile there was a hill that looked like Pikes Peak. I passed four people who had to walk it. Then it was out to small rolling hills with a tail wind. Back was headwind all the way through these rolling hills. Didn't get to go down Pikes Peak. They took us a different direction through turns in the neighborhoods.
