Jo63 - 2013-05-15 6:10 AM Finally caught up! Tony & dirk thanks for the recommendations for nutrition I will give both a try. Will, I did use PBJ 's and bananas last year, I need something solid, I just went to a nutriontal talk on Sat she also recommended pretzels as it also has the salt factor. As for motivation I have to have something scheduled for after Syracuse, we are doing a Saprtan run in Septmeber so I will check out Tri-Indy and talk to my husband and see if we can swing it! Dina, was the water temp cold??? Brenda how did your daughter do? Dirk as far as what IM, you should definetly do IMWI. There is so much support from the spectators, you will love it! I too am volunteering just have to sign up for something all the funner stuff was gone by the time I decided to do this and..... If you volunteer you can go and cheer Tony on and stand in line To sign up on Sept 9 with Brenda and I and help me celebrate my 50th birthday

It was probably 70, with the wetsuit it was very comfortable. In fact, I hate the wetsuit so much I was thinking I didn't really need it. I heard the local lake is still only 64 though.

I am hoping the water temp will be 70 degrees for this weekend's Oly.  I have yet to do an OWS but I feel pretty confident I won't get one in prior to Saturday.

DirkP - 2013-05-13 7:14 PM p>Joanne, if you could swing it you know it would be great to have you there too.  Bing maps says it's just over 4 hours from your town to downtown Indy My husband said go for it.....although Iam a little nervous to do this with all of you podium finishers!!!

You and Brenda can race together.  There cam be a couple of junkies racing in "AG playoffs" for Junkie titles.  I can't remember how young you and Brenda are but it might work out that you two can start together like Jeff and I.  Just make sure if you shoose to race Tri-Indy that you and Brenda pick the same swim speed as requested for proper seeding.

I for one would love to see you there!  There are going to be several of us attending.  It seems the count is getting pretty high for those who are attending and those giving consideration.

RunningYogini - 2013-05-16 12:32 PM Did you guys see that the "new" BT site will be up this weekend?  Yikes!  I like this one!  I hope I like the new one.  I wasn't too sure about it when the early stages were introduced.  What do you guys think?

I participated in some of the testing for the new site.  I am sure there will be some bugs to work through but as a rule it should be an incredible change.  The new look will be almost completely different but have a really great, professional feel to it.  Wait until you see it!!

Figured I finally get a Bio up, but be warned its coming from an iPad and I am not responsible for auto correct!

User name: Mambos Name: Matt

Story: not really sure I have a story! I played every sport I could in High School, then went to college. There my only resemblance of exercise was 12oz curls, along with a few "keg stands" thrown in for good measure. I even managed to add a nasty pack a day cancer stick habit! Definitely had everything going for me. College ended and the drinking ended, (mostly) but the cancer stick stuck around. Then some point in 2009 I decided I had enough of being lazy, and wanted to do something about it. Unfortunately 13 years of bad habits and an increase in weight by about 45lns is not easy to get rid of. Took multiple attempts to quick smoking until finally in October of 2010 it finally stuck. Shortly after that I started running and from there the rest is history, 1st 5k 4-2011, sprint 6-2011, after this I became hooked, not only on the racing but the lifestyle. I now become just as agitated by missing workouts as I did going with cigarettes. My wife tells me I just switched one addiction for another, but I am Ok with that.

Family Status: Married with 3 kids. Probably the best thing that ever happened to me because I can credit the birth of my 1st child as the wake up call to take things seriously and realize there are other things to life than bar hopping!

Job: ah the stressful part of my life, I am a production manager at a plastic compounding plant, with roughly 110 employee's that report directly to me. I love the challenge of the position but can be frustrating when people do not care or give the same effort as I do. I just can not understand how people can care so little about something they spend 40% of their day doing. But that is why I get paid, find ways to motivate the people that don't want to be motivated and keep the motivated people from losing motivation!

Current Training: set a PR in a HM in late April and have been lazy since. Doing just enough to be moving, but that is all set to change on 5-19 when my HIM training plan starts.

2012 Races: 2 olys, 1 sprint, 2 HM and who knows how many 5k's and other short distant runners. The most important race though was the Great Buckeye Challenge HIM that I failed to finish. Made it through the swim and Bike (barely) and fell a part! Couldn't run due to severe back pain that was due to a lack of preparation! I had a plan in place when I started in this sport, 2011 were sprints, 2012 were supposed to be all oly's and then a HIM in 2013. But I caved to friends who said I should do this and that, and unfortunately I figured I would be ready.

2013 Races: I have already PR'd my HM, now it's time to concentrate on kicking the crap out of a HIM course! Oh and there will be a few get ready races thrown in there also!

Weightloss: Whatever give me some Pizza!

Ok, that's enough rambling time to get moving and have fun while kicking the crap out of some race courses!

Dirk and Brenda, good luck this weekend!

Theres an annual fun ride tomorrow that they have set up from a local bike club, they have 25, 44 , 62 and a 100 miler set up. It's a fund raiser to buy bikes for kids at Chirstmas time. It will be nice to do this with a group, usually I ride alone, maybe that's why my speed is low, and I have a 3 1/2 hr ride so it's perfect timing!

Jo, which bike length will you be doing?  Enjoy and have fun!

Tomorrow I plan on riding 31 miles to Jen's town to run a 10K so I'll be leaving early on the bike. Today it is VERY foggy out and they are predicting the same weather tomorrow.  3 weeks ago I set a 10K PR but had only ridden 15 miles prior to the race.  Will it happen again?????

Also next week I will be out of town working so for the new folks, tell them I said "hi".

Good luck to everyone racing or training hard this weekend and next week.

Quick check in before they upgrade to the new BT site.

I've loved reading the bio's and re-aquainting myself to you all. What a great group of folks that Dirk, Jeff, Jonathan and Warren have assembled. It's no wonder we all want to stay part of the family. Welcome back Vero!

For those of you who asked - my daughter won her 400 and advances on to regionals on Tuesday. She'll be seeded 4th and they only take the top 3 to state so it should be a great race. Her 4x400 also advances and will be seeded 2nd.

KARL - Safe biking to you in the morn, especially if it's foggy. Be extra careful. Good luck in the 10K! That's an impressive brick workout you have planned. Is Jen racing too?

DINA - It's so good to be back and reading what you write. You describe things so well that I could sense all your sweating and huffy with your daughter on your run. You're too funny.

JOANNE - That's great your hubby gave you the nod to do Tri-Indy! Are you doing the Oly? We'll be in the same AG. I'll put "Below Average" as my answer to the swim question. Allison is doing the Oly too but she's a lot younger than us and she's a good swimmer so we won't see her.

How in the world do you all BOLD things and change the font and color in your messages? It's probably really easy, but for the life of this old woman, I can't figure out how to do it!

Looking forward to seeing Dirk tomorrow finish his race as I'm just starting the run portion.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

It will be nice to do this with a group, usually I ride alone, maybe that's why my speed is low, and I have a 3 1/2 hr ride so it's perfect timing!

I would highly suggest you jump into some group riding.  You can learn a lot from cyclists, form some new friendships and the time will blow by while you're on the bike.  I would much rather ride in a group than ride solo but spending some time solo on the bike is also pretty important while getting ready for long course racing.

My suggestions for your first group ride would be to provide an estimated pace that you can ride to the event organizers or some of the other riders and find some people close to your pace.  But the reality of group riding is that you WILL be able to ride a little faster within the protection of the group than you can solo.  More than speed what you should see is that your effort will be much lower at the same speeds than if you were riding alone.  Just make sure you are riding in the slipstream (drafting) of the riders in front of you.

You'll have a great time!

My plan for riding this year will be similar to last year's with one exception.  Last year I rode either, by myself or with the team that I am on this year.  This season my plan is to ride with my team when I can, which will be more times than not when they begin the group rides, but when the local cycling club is meeting less than a mile from my house I'll plan to ride with them.  (The team I am on is opening a new cycling store and all of the normal ride organizers are busy trying to get the doors opened.)

  • The tight knit-ness of this group isn't because of I or any of the mentors,  it's because of the people that have come together to join and learn and grow together.  We, the mentors, are simply the ones who started something that you all have made what has become a great place to bounce all kinds of things around.

For those of you who asked - my daughter won her 400 and advances on to regionals on Tuesday. She'll be seeded 4th and they only take the top 3 to state so it should be a great race. Her 4x400 also advances and will be seeded 2nd.

  • This is such a great blessing to you and Tennie!  And how did she do with not having her spikes?  It would appear on the surface that there was no effect if she was able to place 1st.  Great job Tennie!!

  • I am impatiently awaiting the answer to the question of "are you doing Tri-Indy Joanne?"  It's great to hear Allison is jumping into the fray!  This year should be a great race!!  So many people are going to be there
  1. Dirk
  2. Jeff
  3. Brenda
  4. Allison (2012 Junkie)
  5. Joanne?
  6. Dina?
  7. Shannon Nierman (My Chiro/ART specialist)

You should have the formatting tools above the window where you write your test.  You can change all kinds of things from this location.  you can put the sarc font and italics, place charts, undo and redo, change the font color and size and on and on.............

See you tomorrow.  Are you doing the sprint or oly?

DIRK - what are you talking about "the place I do my test"? I hit "reply" to the last post and I have nothing on my screen that shows I can do anything other than type and add Emoticons (which are located to the left side). I have four boxes at the bottom that say "Include signature", "Disable HTML" "Enable emoticons" and "Attach a file after posting". I have signature and emoticons checked. Then to the left of those I have "HTML: Yes", "Anonymous: No" and "MBBS Code: Yes". I type, hit preview, then submit. Nada on anything where I can do all the cool stuff you can do.

I'm doing the Oly. Barb is too. You'll both be done eating your pancakes by the time I cross the finish line so go ahead and enjoy.

Yay! Glad we are out of limbo.

I'm officially doing Tough Mudder Jacksonville tomorrow. This time I have trained for it; over the past month I have shifted my workout to focus more on strength training with just one swim per week, a few runs, and two bike sessions.

During this time I have packed on 5lbs, which is a lot when you have a 5' 1/2" stature. When I pulled my jeans on this morning I could feel it too. I feel like I have done the right training leading up to this TM, but I do not like feeling those extra pounds, I'm sure some of those pounds are fat.

Vero welcome back man we missed having you around here.

Karl, Jen, Brenda and Dirk good luck racing this weekend, race hard and be safe and do the Junkies proud. If I've missed anyone else I apologize.

JoAnne good luck and have fun on the group ride this weekend. I agree with Dirk it's a lot more fun when you have some company on your rides. It also helps to ride with people who are stronger with than you. I find it motivates me to try and keep up and I know it's going to make me better in the long run.

For me this weekend I am hoping to hook up with one of the guys I swim with out at the lake to do a long ride with him. He is very good on the bike so just trying to keep up with him will give me a great workout plus we'll be hitting the hills and I need to ride as many of those I can from here on out. Probably follow that up with an 8 to 10 mile run on Sunday assuming the legs will cooperate with me after the long ride.

Im intrested if there is still room.

Name: Derek

Story: Last June I decided that I needed to make a change in the way I lived my life.  I was 245 lbs.  I had taken up running a few years earlier however I consistantly hit road blocks with injuries to my knees.  Last June I bought a road bike off a friend for $40, a 1990 Specialized Sirus.  I decided that biking would be easier on my knees then running 5-6 times a week.  I had no idea how to train for races and ran 5-6 times a week at race pace.  When I decided that I would do a tri, I began searching the internet and found this site.  It opened up a whole new world of training ideas.  8 weeks later I had lost 20 pounds and complete my first sprint in 1:27:50.  8 weeks earlier I couldn't swim a lap without gasping for breath.

Fast forward 10 months.  Ive lost 40lbs without changing my diet.  Ive gone from a 2:30/100m avg. swimmer, to a 1:45/100m avg. swimmer.  I PR my last 10k of the season in October by over 3 minutes, at 47:26, and I just purchased a new P2.

FAMILY:  Happily married for 2 years, and the proud father of the baby girl born August 8th.  Shes part of the reason for the change in life style.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I have my first HM this Sunday. Ive got a sprint lined up in two weeks, and another two weeks after that.  I know alot of racing.  But Im using them as a learing experience more than anything.  Im planning on a Oly in Mid August and another in Mid Sept.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:  I have a drive to compete.  I can't exercise for exercise sake.  I need something to drive me forward.  In my early days I played a high level of ice hockey, after I was done with the competition I had nothing to work toward.  Racing has given me a drive to constantly better myself.

Cheers,

heres to the upcoming season, Derek
