Subject: Keep forgetting to eat on long bike rides
I'm sure I'm not the first to have this problem. I'm fine for the first half of my long ride but then as I get more fatigued I forget to eat. All of a sudden 45 mins has passed and I haven't eaten anything. on yesterday's ride I finished feeling quite nauseous because of this.Do any of you have any tricks to remind you to eat frequently.I don't have a problem with drinking enough so I guess one solution would be to drink more of my calories .

have a schedule.  I would ingest something every 10 minutes while IM training.  On short rides, that might just be nuun or sports drink, but on long rides I would alternate between drink at 10, 30 and 50 and gu chomps at 20, 40, and 60.  I know some people who set up alarms on their garmins for eating, but I never found that necessary.

 

I think you really have to be disciplined.  if this is happening now, it will happen on race day and your day could be ruined.

I have used the watch alarm method as I can be a real space cadet on long rides/runs/races. Plus in the conditions I train in, it's easy to get dangerously dehydrated. I usually make it a point to drink every 15 minutes, every ten if it's unusually hot or in the later stages of a workout that goes beyond two hours. Nutrition depends on the length of the workout/race but I try to take in something every 45-60 minutes starting at about 45-60 minutes, about 120 calories. I haven't done an IM and that seems to be enough for me up to and including HIM and five hour rides--most people would probably take in more. If you're better at drinking, liquid nutrition might be a good option if you can tolerate it and find products you like.

Most newer garmin's have a nutrition timer.  Set it at 45 min and it will go off at that those intervals to remind you to eat.

I didn't realize that the newer Garmins had such a feature - I'm in the market for a new one since my trusty 205 is in a state of terminal decline - do you know off hand which models have the feature?

Yes, the 205 has it. It's called a "time/distance alert". Set it up for however often you need to eat or drink and it will beep at you on that interval.

I use a cheap Timex watch to beep on certain intervals either every 15 or 20 minutes. I have it attached to my aerobars or basebar and leave it there.

One tip I learned is if you miss an interval like riding down long hill or climbing take in your calories then reset the timer so you don't eat to much together.

910 has a nutrition timer on both bike and run settings (each independent timers).

My longest ride has been 4 hours.. But my nutrition needs always vary. I bring some along, sometimes I need all of it, sometimes none. 

I think overall one has to tune into their body. Were I going to use an alarm it wouldn't be to automatically eat something, but check myself to see how I feel. If I'm hungry I eat. If not.. I don't.

Long ride = 5 hours , last hour I totally forgot to eat. I need to have a very loud alarm sounding every 10 - 15 mins !

I set my Garmin to sound an alarm every 15 minutes reminding me to eat.

During an Ironman, you should stay ahead of your hunger and thirst. Not get on it when you feel it. You want your body to get a constant input of calories/carbs/electrolytes to feed the engine. If you feel hungry, then you are behind and your energy levels might drop.

Thus, you take in small amount of calories (liquid or solid food) throughout the 112 mile bike ride. I also think it isn't good to put solid food in your stomach later in the ride. Last 2 hours should be gels, liquid nutrition, to prepare your stomach for the run. Additionally, if you are someone who is training/racing at a high effort level, then you should probably stick to all liquid nutrition. One of my clients who averages 19-21 mph on his training rides is doing all UCAN and it has worked great.

Of course, different things work for different people. I just know I wouldn't ever tell a client who is training for/doing an Ironman to eat or drink when they feel hungry or thirsty. Just not a great nutrition/hydration plan.

NOTE: If you want to drink more of your calories, check out Infinit and UCAN. I'm a big proponent of UCAN (complex carb drink- Google it), but mixing it can be a bit of a pain (works great with a hand mixer, but you can't use a hand mixer out on the course).

Agreed.  I never feel "hungry" on the bike, eating when hungry would be disasterous in an IM.  Might work in a shorter race, but not when you are going for 8+ hours.

I have used Infinit in the past. I get the orange flavor, with the flavor down pretty low. Then I add some orange Gatorade to my concentrated bottle to give it a better flavor. It works wonders.

Also, I would make a 4 hour bottle, which worked for me because I would switch from solids to liquid every hour, till the last 2 hours on the bike. It was highly concentrated, but with a small swig every 15 mins washed down by lots of water, it was fine.

With that said, I'll be switching to UCAN for the HIM distance. Not sure about an IM distance just yet, since it takes me 7-8 hours to finish the IM bike. Not sure if I want to mess with UCAN on the course. Or how it will hold up if I pre-mix a bottle and it sits in my special needs bag.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by making a 4 hour bottle.  Do you just add additional scoops to concentrate it and then drink it more slowly (or with water?)  I've seen that term come up a lot and was curious how people do that.  I just started on infinit and so far have loved it.  Wondered how to use it for longer rides though.

Exactly. I make a 3 hr bottle which means that I put 6 scoops of Infinit in the bottle, then fill with water. This bottle should be treated as nutrition only (meaning you get hydration another way). I have the bottle marked, with permanent marker, in 3 equal portions. The goal then is to finish each portion every hour. I then set my Garmin to alarm every 20 min and then drink ~1/3 of each section at a time. Chase with water. Super simple and easy to keep track of.

You can make your own for about 5% of the cost of Infinit using bulk maltodextrin, salt tabs, and flavoring if you want.
