Or is it swum?

Anyway, I was doing stairs at Bryant lake this morning, and the lake looked very inviting as I was sweating my behind off....   Probably still too cold...

Not even close!  My first OWS this year will probably be my first race at Lake Minnetonka.  I am opening our cabin - my usual ows location - near Brainerd this weekend and heard that as of May 5 the lake was still ice covered.

The "senior" otters at the YWCA that I swim at went and swam in lake Calhoun today, for practice. And of course that is with NO wetsuits. I think their coach is crazy. But he also swims things like the English Channel. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

FoggyGoggles - 2013-05-13 3:42 PM

I was in the other day... 70 degrees air temp, 41 degrees water temp.

It hurt.

Trying again tomorrow possibly.

That's...just...awesome! How long did you last?

I thought you guys meant 7 AM and that sounded terrible.  I work in Bloomington so if I had brought my wetsuit I'd be there.  Is Bush Lake good for OWS?  I'm trying to figure out a lake to swim in before or after work this summer.

Well, I made the plunge and did my first open water swim tonight.  I went to Lake Ann in Chanhassen and let me tell you, it's still icy cold!  That said, I had on a full wetsuit as well as a silicone and latex swim cap, so the worse part was cold water on the face and feet.  I only swam a few hundred yards, but figured I should get the wetsuit on and get a sense of what's coming at the Blaine Tri this weekend.

Maybe next time -- it was cold and really windy.  We had waves breaking over us.  I lasted about 1000 yard.  I got really disorientate at the end - the cold got to me.

Bush Lake is a pretty small lake.  I tend to stay closer to shore but there are always people swimming across the lake.  There are life guards between June and September (and a parking fee).  If the guards are there you have to stay inside of the swim area - which is pretty big - I usually swim big squares around the area.  The guards leave at 7:00 pm week nights so people wait until 7:01 to swim across the lake.

I'm in Eagan and had no problem this evening with my wetsuit/silicone cap.  The lake is 7.4 acres around and has a max depth of 30 feet.  I would say the temp was 50 degrees......I couldn't imagine doing it without a wetsuit.

Oh, if anyone is looking for a tool to measure there OWS, I came across this tutorial that explains how to use Google maps.  In short, go to Google maps, sign in and click on "map labs" (bottom left) and select the enable "Distance Measurement Tool".

I'm going to jump in Lake Ann (Chanhassen) this weekend, just to try out my new wetsuit. Not sure which day will be best, but if anyone else wants to flail around, let me know!

Me and dan(silentcs42) swam in square lake today. We swam for about an hour. It was cold at first but after a while only my feet were cold ( my feet are always cold though).

The water was the clearest I have ever seen there. We could actually see the bottom out away from the beach. I first thought we were crazy, but it turned out well.

The worst was getting our faces wet. However, the reaction of the divers in dry suits was pretty hilarious. They thought we were nuts and there was no way we were making it around the lake.

The west shore was a lot colder, but the water was pristine. Between that and the company it was a pleasant swim.

Swam 30 mins at Fish Lake in Maple Grove this afternoon.
First it was cold but a few laps around the ropes it was still COLD!
When I stood up to run, I stumbled and flopped back to the water.
I'm gonna get a thermal cap and gloves and booties.

Our club swam in Warner Lake in Clearwater for our annual Memorial Day OWS at 9 am today. We took the temperature when we were finished and it was 58 degrees near the shore. I had brain freeze for the first 200 yards, but most of us swam across and back (~1400 yards).

I'm thinking about heading out to Buffalo for a swim and bike either Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on how my nights at work go... Sounds like it's tolerable out there.

That lake is big one and I'm not sure it'll will be above 60F by Sunday.
Fish Lake is much smaller and man it was chilly with 55F.
