Subject: IM FL Training- how is everyone doing??

I'm about to finish up my 4th week of IM FL training this weekend.  So far so good.  This week and last week I've been slacking with getting enough sleep and it's starting to catch up with.  I am really going to do better about sleep- especially when my training picks up or else I'll be miserable!  Other than not enough sleep, everything is going pretty good.  I just can't imagine having long training days, but I know those days will coming shortly and I'll have to get used to training in both the am and pm.

IM FL is a little over 3 months away- YIKES!!!

So how is everyone doing??

Things are going pretty good w/ me too. Granted I just had a planned vacation, but I'm trying to jump right back in (lucky me that it's a "recovery" week). Even w/ the first month of training I started to lose weight, and really shape up... and get super tired. I can't even imagine what it's going to be like when the training hours are DOUBLE! Ahhh, it kind of freaks me out every time I think about it, but then I try to tell myself... one week at a time, one day at a time. Yes you have to plan ahead so that the workouts actually get DONE, but sometimes you have to take things one step at a time so you don't get overwhelmed!

I've really got to get more EFFICIENT. With everything. My life. My training. My work. (Probably that means not spending as much time on BT to be totally honest.) If I only do work at work, I should not have to work long hours... if I have a client dinner or something, I can come into the office later that morning (and therefore train long that morning). If I don't futs around at home, and focus on getting specific chores done at specific times on specific days, nothing will get overwhemingly slobby (and therefore invoke the wrath of the hubby, etc.). And if I get efficient about my training and life (blaring thing here would be the 30 minutes I wasted this morning getting up at 6 AM but then not getting out of bed until 6:30), I should be able to fit all the training, and all the sleep necessary to be well prepared for IMFL. *sigh* If only I could follow my own advice!

I did watch the ultrasport.tv movie about the IM.... wow. Freaked me out, and totally got me psyched at the same time. Wow. We have a lot of work ahead of us.... but it will be SOOO worth it on November 4th!

Alright, about that doing work at work thing... gotta sign off kids!

I'm in for FL. Working on week 17 out of the 20 week plan. I have a big race on 9/10/06 that is about a 3/4 IM distance so all I have to do it get more biking in and maintain the swim and running. It's tough where I live in October because it gets so cold and you can't really lake swim any more, although running and riding is much more pleasant!

I'm mostly worried about the ocean swim. I have trouble in the salt water. I wil talk to my friends who did it last year. get some strategy and will share with you.

just have to stay healthy! I'm so excited! we are going up to IMLP next weekend, my hubby is racing and a lot of people from my tri club. Sooo excited. next weekend is going to be a big training weekend!
Good luck and keep posting your progress so we all are motivated!

Hey, I had a good training weekend- 50 mile bike ride Saturday, 14 mile run this morning, though the legs are killing me. I'm up to 4,000 yards swimming in the pool. We have 16 weeks!!! Keep the positive outlook. That's all that there is to it. For my IM schedule the real hard part begins mid August and goes until the first of October.
No real injury issues to worry about, but the legs sure are beat from this mornings run. It was the longest since my marathon in December. Plus, I am in Mississippi and the heat here is terrible! But then, it is everywhere else too.
Train well!

Just got finished my longest training week ever - 17 hours.  Ouch.  Had a great bike yesterday - 70 miles with the hubba hubby.  Seem to be doing better with bike endurance and pace.  All the hill work seems to finally be paying off.

The long runs are killing me.  Knees and ankles are screaming today.  Looking forward to rest and recovery week next week!

Wow, you are scaring me! 17 hours all ready?! I am following the BT beginner IM program and am doing a 12 hour week starting tomorrow. Yikes, I feel so behind! (I think I hit one week of 18 hours about 4 weeks out from IMFL, but only one week of that insanity... though there's 17 the week before and 16 before that I think....)

Anyhoo, congrats on getting through it, and wow--you're going to kick some big booty come November!!!!

Wow, you are 15 weeks away from IMFL and you are already hitting that many hours a week? Are you following a particular training plan?

you are NOT! stick to the BT program and you'll be fine. You want to build up your volume and have your peak volume 4-6 weeks before IMFL

I am on the second of a 4 part 6 weeks series of IM training plan. I don't think you necessarily need to be at 17 weeks right now. The hardest part for me kicks in Mid August. Main thing is to get those long rides and long runs in. This week is reovery week and next week gets back to build week and at max has about 14 to 16 hours - that is max! Just keep on track.

I'm using the hours outlined for IM training in the Triathlete's Training Bible.  According to that book, I'm actually using the minimum weekly hours suggested for IM training.  The 17 hour weeks have been rough, but I am coming from a background of being sedentary about 2 1/2 years ago and I feel like I need a lot of base building.  I don't feel burnt out yet or overly fatigued, so I try to stick with the plan as close as possible to the hours they have outlined.

The remainder of my training weeks have the following hours (doing Base 2 twice and then Base 3 twice):

12.5, 15, 17, 8.5 (2nd Base 2)
13.5, 16, 18, 8.5 (Base 3
13.5, 16, 18, 8.5 (Base 3)
13 (Peak 1)
10 (Peak 2)

Following the BT plan as well and beginning the 6th week tomorrow - week 15 on the plan. So far so good except missing a few swims this week due to biz travel. Feeling pretty good so far but know the hours are about to crank up (I think 13.5 this week).

Hey, I finished IMLP on Sunday so today I am quite sore, nothing serious just deep muscle soreness(getting up from my desk is a new experience in pain). So for the next couple days it is just swimming, then biking and will start to run again this weekend.

Going to concentrate on the bike for the next month, then bring the run in big time the last 2 months. Some how I have become a good swimmer so will try to just maintain what I had for IMLP.

So all and all doing good, not sure what October will bring with shorter days and colder temps here in the north.

Hope all is weel with the rest of the IMFL ers.

Well, it does make a difference that you are coming from a seditary place- I have 4 years of triathlon trianing behind me and an excellent base built.
My hours at this point are around 12 to 15- Long rides and Long runs on the weekend- swims of 3,000 to 4,000 twice a week, two spin classes followed by 4 to 6 mile runs, one weight lifting evening, one speed run day for an hour - so I get 3 runs in a week, 3 to 4 cycling times in a week, 2 swimming times in a week. One day off if I can ease it in, or use the weight training day as a 'day off'. Mid August will kick in the longer Saturday and Sunday training days (4 to 7 hour) bike rides and building up the runs to 13 to 20 mile distances for the long one on Sunday. The main thing, I think, is to listen to your body. My goal is to finish- not to place. I want to finish in under 14:30. As a good friend of mine says- 1) What don't kill you will make you stronger....2) You gotta make it to the start line first!

We all need cooler weather and we have had a little break here in Mississippi.
Any of you racing in Shreveport next weekend for the River Cities Tri?

Maine- Good for you! I was up there with my hubby. He competed and I trained with my friends and club. We were outside of the Prague Motor Inn..the Hudson valley Triathlon Club. One of our club members qualified for Kona and another came in 3rd in his age group and another got 2nd in clydesdales under 39! I did the race last year and am gearing up for IMFL.
Take it easy with getting back into training. I think last year I didn;t do anything until the Thursday after the race. Swimming would be a really great recovery for you. remember to also take care of your immune system while you recover!

By the way, what was your finishing time? Last year I did a 15:18:38. Looking to do a 13 hour race at florida. (corssing fingers and training diligently)

We're down to double digits, people!  No longer is IMFL 100+ days away.   Only 97 left.  Tick tock tick tock.  Can't wait for the big day, but still feel like there is plenty of work to do.

I'm hoping training in this oppressive heat is toughening my pudding butt up a bit.  Fingers crossed for nice weather on race day.

Whoa - 96 days now (assuming your count is right - I'll trust you). Scary thought!! Can't wait for the day to be here yet can't believe it will be here so soon. I'm with you on the heat. Also looked a few weeks out on my training plan tonight and man is the volume cranking up! Let's keep our collective fingers crossed that no hurricanes spend time on our section of the redneck riviera this summer.

If you go to the Ironman Florida home page (http://www.ironmanflorida.com/#) there is a "Race Countdown" clock - scroll down to the bottom on the right.  It gives you the days until IMFL (as well as hours, minutes, and seconds - as if we need that kind of pressure!).

Wow- it seems like IM FL is close to being just around the corner!!  It's exciting to me at the moment- I am sure I'll get nervous when the time gets closer.  I've been having following everyones' training progress.  It makes me feel like I'm not training alone!

I have my 2nd century ride this Sunday followed by a 30 min. run, so that should be a good confidence builder for me.  I plan to practice my IM nutrition and hydration.  Hopefully I'll have it down by the time November is here.

I still have 2 weeks of base building left until I actually start the builidng phase- yikes!  The thought of LONG bricks right now really scare me.  I am trying to get a lot of sleep considering the workouts I'm doing now seem to really tire me out.  I'm usually dead by the end of the week!

I hope everyone elses' training is going well.  The most important thing is to keep it fun!

Waaaaaaaaaaahh.... I hurt my widdle knee.

Seriously - have done everything I've ever read or heard about in terms of what NOT to do when running to get injured and it caught up with me.  I've got that IBT syndrome thingy.  Ouch.

Hopefully a week of icing it and no running will do the trick.  Happened yesterday and it was so painful I could barely walk but today I'm walking a lot better.

Sigh....

As I said before, maybe you are training too many hours too early?

Seriously, none of the athletes I trained/helped for IMLP trained more than 18 one maybe two weeks total and not until 5-6 weeks prior the race. You still have time to adjust. Work on getting recovered and maybe rethink your weekly volume…

Actually it's a result of trying to increase speed and distance at the same time.  I know better but did it anyway.  Lesson learned.

Thanks for your two cents.  Nothing makes an injured person feel better than having someone tell them "I told you so".

Oh no!! Definitely ice it and make sure to stretch it well, take some Aleve and lay off if you can.  Also, don't worry about speed- the IM is about endurance, not speed.  It's not a race- it's a long day on the course.

But...if/when you work on your speed again, make sure to increase your cadence with faster/shorter strides.  If you try to lengthen your stride to increase speed you'll increase your risk of injury.

Like Jorge said- I think you started out with too much.  (like ou wanted to hear that again!)  But now focus on recovering.  When you're recovered make sure to start back slow and EZ.

Well I am not trying to make you feel bad but actually the opposite… You can use this unfortunate situation and turn it into an opportunity to adjust and improve moving forward or you can take my comment/advice the wrong way. It is up to you, but you still have plenty of time…
