Master 1517 Grand Prairie | Subject: How fast will IM Texas 2014 fill up So, while I have not done anything longer than an Olympic I am signed up for a HIM in October (HIM Austin). I recently did a weekend in which I rode 62miles (Sat) and the next day I swam 2.3 miles and run 14 miles. This makes me believe that by May 2014 I can be ready for a full IM. Now the problem is that an IM fills up fast, so should I sign up now or can I wait a few weeks? |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: How fast will IM Texas 2014 fill up IMTX does not fill up fast. I think it was open until December (but registration opened late) and was open for four months or so for 2012. It won't fill up fast this time either after the carnage yesterday. The early season heat/humidity scares off people... as well it should. I know you live in Texas and it makes sense to do this race but I wouldn't really encourage Iron newbies to do IMTX. Other races are hot and humid (like Louisville) but none are this early in the season. It was brutal out there yesterday. My advice would be to pick a race with more hospitable conditions for your first IM. |

Master 1517 Grand Prairie | Subject: RE: How fast will IM Texas 2014 fill up There seem to be not that many alternatives. Los Cabos is even earlier in the season and just as brutal. Louisville is 3 month later (in August) and a 13 hour drive up north. Panama City is even later in the season, so is Tempe. Which means for both of them I would be training in the Texas heat. Besides that my company closes the year in August, so end of August early September are not good training month for me. Cozumel would be nice, but it is so late in the season... Besides my mother in law lives in Houston and I would have a home to stay, a home cooked meal that works and I can acclimate to the heat all year long. |

Heat acclimation doesn't really work like that. Nobody, I repeat, nobody was acclimated to the heat yesterday. It snuck up on everyone as it had been cool until the few days leading up to the race. That's the gamble with IMTX. Do what fits into your life but just know that you're going to suffer at IMTX. |

As long as the race stays in late May, weather conditions will be anywhere from nice to absolutely brutal. The one big advantage to this race for people in the South is that it lets you get in your heaviest volume training months (Feb, March & April) before the weather turns so brutally hot. |

There isn't an ironman out there that's going to be easy, and there isn't one that doesn't present some weather risk (too hot, too cold, too windy, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc etc etc) so if it's convenient for you and you want to do it, then do it. |

The weekend before was in the 60s and 70s. Then came Saturday - |

Not trying to scare people away but be forewarned. Ain't that the truth. It was brutally hot and I was just volunteering. Two weeks prior, I did a sprint in the same location at it was 42 F in the morning. The weather is very fickle at this time of year, but by mid-May bet on hot. The heat took its toll on veterans. I know a guy who did it in 2012 and DNF this year. Two others guys took 1.5 hours longer in 2013 than 2012. One of those guys did Galveston 70.3 in 6 hours and took nearly the full 17 hours... and this was despite improving his Galveston time by 35 minutes. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: How fast will IM Texas 2014 fill up Pros race for money or points, so if they know they are having a bad day they may drop out of the race so recovery is easier and they can race again soon. I know a new pro male that raced and it was his worst IM time ever even slower than his first IM back in 2008. |

This was my first full IM and I I expected it to be difficult and it didn't disappoint but it's not like it was some mind altering/life changing event. |

Not really an advantage when you can't train in weather like it is on race day. It would be better if the weather was brutally hot, because it will be brutally hot on race day. IMTX will not fill up fast. Especially after people see the numbers from this year. I saw a webpage that showed overall finishing times were 13 minutes slower, and there were 400-ish DNF's (NOT including DNS's). I think a newbie can do IMTX. Train properly, then pace properly according to the weather conditions on race day... and have proper nutrition and hydration. |
