Tri Minnesota Triathlon Racing Series
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 40m 17s
Overall Rank = 305/447
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 24/31
Pre-race routine:

Cheeroes in the car. My stomach wasn't feeling great so I didn't put much in.
Event warmup:

Bikes 1/4 mile, stretched, swam 100 yards or so.
Swim
  • 14m 7s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming is my best leg of the tri but I hadn't OWS yet this year and hadn't swam in my wetsuit before. I usually swim with a pretty high kick and the wetsuit made my lets float so high that they were practically out of the water so I didn't use much kick. I also usually have a pretty long glide but without seeing the pool floor moving past I lost judgement of my speed and pushed too hard the first half. I've swam this same pace in open water without a wetsuit so I don't think I got much of a speed boost (I haven't learned how to make use of it yet) but I was definitely warmer and more comfortable because of it.
What would you do differently?:

I needed to prepare and practice OWS in my wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 03m 1s
Comments:

I was out of breath after swimming too hard so I moved slower in T1 to catch my breath. I had practiced taking my wetsuit off so it didn't slow me down much.
What would you do differently?:

Need more practice getting into SPD-SL pedals. My foot fell out of my pedal and I landed full force on my seat. That stung...
Bike
  • 50m 23s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Second time using my new bike! I really like it! When I train I often follow rivers, creeks, or track-to-trails and it has made me way under prepared for hills.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, train on rolling hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Run
  • 31m 38s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Ug, I suck at running. I ran a 5k in 27 min a few weeks ago and while that's not very fast, it's much faster than I ran here. I think my overall endurance and nutrition was too low to finish strong.
What would you do differently?:

Longer training sessions, better nutrition, work on running speed.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I definitely haven't been training enough. Various circumstances caused me to use a lot of new/borrowed equipment that I'm not used to.

Great job, considering the new equipment you were dealing with. It sounds like you learned some valuable lessons   It was nice meeting you!

Great job, and certainly a great swim. New equipment can always pose some challenges when first used in a race setting. I enjoyed meeting you, and hope to see you out there in the future. Congrats!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
