Subject: Do disc's only benefit 25mph+ riders?
Hey all...so I have been going back and forth on getting a disc wheel for a while now. I posted a while back about aerojacket vs disc wheel and got some good feedback. The net of it was, I think id prefer to go with a disc over an aerojacket.

I also decided to call HED directly and ask them about their disc wheels and see how I would benefit, being a clydesdale or close to one. Let me preface this with saying I currently use a pair of Zipp 404's for racing. When I called HED, the guy asked me what I typically average in a triathlon. In my first IMAZ last year, i did just under 20 and in the marquee oly i did 21.5, which was my fastest ever. The HED rep said that riders who avg 25mph+ gain the most benefit from a disc since they are strong riders. He said for someomne like me...I would be better suited at looking at the FR 6/9 combo (the zipp equivalent of 404/808) because Since I am not as strong of a rider, i would benefit from the less rolling resistance of a rear 808 or similar wheel than a disc since a disc is heavier.

What are your thoughts on this? I would be curous to hear from people who are close to my avg speed and have a disc and hear how it benefited from them.

Thanks!

don't know if my favorite part was when you started sending insulting PM's to everyone, or when you changed your username to try and throw people off the scent.

Either the rep at HED misspoke or you misunderstood the point they were trying to make.

He said for someomne like me...I would be better suited at looking at the FR 6/9 combo (the zipp equivalent of 404/808) because Since I am not as strong of a rider, i would benefit from the less rolling resistance of a rear 808 or similar wheel than a disc since a disc is heavier.

As above; a disc does have very slightly more rolling resistance due ot the increased mass but since the mass difference between a deep rear and disc is going to be small, the change here is going to be very small as well. The disc will take more energy to spin up to race speeds due to the increased mass but again this is a very small impact and can largely be ignored. The key point is that a disc is going to reduce your CdA; you can expect a savings in the .5s/km over a deep rear wheel for almost all riders.

I'll bite just for fun and I refuse to go to ST.

Aero > Weight for Tri's
Disc > non Discs for aero

The longer a rider is on the course they more they benefit from aero improvements.

Actually to be honest, I have used ST for their classifieds before. I find the classifieds section quite a good experience. I refuse to go to the forums.

Are you talking total time benefit or proportionate time benefit?

Obviously only if said gorilla is pacing you as well. We might have to get USAT involved if there are gorilla decals, that's kinda a sensitive subject too.

Wow...I saw the ST thread within the first 4 posts and ignored it after that thinking jackmott and crew could handle the dirty work.  Who would have thought?

Anyway...to the OP...you're going to get the exact same answers here on BT as you will get on ST.  Basically because there are a lot of people who post on both sites.

But, should said gorilla ride a disc or stick with regular deep wheels?

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
