HOw many of these do you do before the race? How far does your plan have you go? Does your plan have you taper on the distance of your swim?

I am doing the fink intermediate plan and I think it has you swim up to 3500, but I am going to do 4000 a couple of times so I am more comfortable with the distance. Imlou will be my first ironman, so I don't know how good my advice is. I know I just like to be comfortable in the open water more than anything. Good luck. I look forward to other replies too.

Outdoors, I'd do maybe a couple bigger swims around that distance. Otherwise I'm in the pool getting in at least one that size or a bit more a week, preferably a few. All of the pool sets would be composed of various interval lengths.

I did only one prior to my one IM. I wish I'd done more (maybe just a couple more), though, but injuries kept me from doing so (not injured from swimming )

I just did close to 2 in the last 3 days. Saturday 2 mile OW swim followed by a 6 mile run, Sunday 41 mile mountain bike race (4 hours), Monday 2.2 mile OW swim.

I'm scheduled to do 4 of them in the OW.  Almost all of my pool swim workouts are 3500-4000 anyway, so it's not that big a deal for me to do the long continuous swims.  It actually takes less total time since you don't have the rest intervals.

0... I'm on 30 week program with 3 swims a week. The last 10 weeks it has six swim programs but one of them has 3,500m strait. The six programs repeat every two weeks. Not quite 2.4 miles but it's close. So I guess 5 if you want to round up, which I'm not since it's still a little short.

One before each IM about 1.5 weeks before the race. just a confidence booster workout and to get an idea of how fast my swim will be on race day. For fitness? not a good workout. I did a lot of long interval sets of 3500 m total (like once a week for 6 or so months before the race). Those, were great for fitness building.

I should have mentioned something like this with my original answer.  Interval workouts are definately the way to go if building swim fitness is your goal.

I'm doing one OWS session a week simply because it's not as boring as swimming in the pool on my own.  My other two swims are with a Master's class that keeps me accountable.  When I go to the pool on my own, I tend to drive past the pool by "accident" a few times, and when I do get there, I am always tempted to cut the workout short.

I don't mind swimming OW as much...mainly because I actually feel like I'm going somewhere and I don't need to count laps.  Once I swim down...I have no other choice but to swim back so I'm committed to the distance.  I usually get to see some training partners at the beach I swim at as well so it's a social bonus for me.

Some others already mentioned it, but swim fitness is built up better in the pools by doing lots and lots of intervals. For getting used to swimming open water then doing open water a few times helps out. As I've become better at constructing and executing interval sets (both in masters and on my own) in the pool, the continuous open water swims have become much easier. I've needed zero practice to keep right on going and doing better than ever with it. The pacing is noticeably lower than the intervals, so it's easy to keep right on going without the mini breaks.

I did one 4000yd workout in the pool. But I also did 3500yds 3x per week for 10 weeks (Fink competitive plan). That one 4000 swim was just a mental booster.

When you guys say that intervals are better to "build fitness", do you mean make you faster or stronger overall? I'm training for my first IM and for the majority of my swims, I've just been jumping in and doing about a 500 meter warm up, then a main set straight (usually 2000-3500 meters) and then a few 100 cool down. My goal is just to finish so my thinking is that by the time the race gets here, I will be really good at swimming long distances... should I be doing more intervals?

I try to do 4-5 and have 3 in open water. I will try and do a couple ows swim/bike brick

I taper longest on the run, medium on bike, and will swim and do very short swim taper. If I don't do late season IM, I do more ows during the taper.

For me my swim fitness effects how the rest of IM day. Longer swim time means longer time to not take in calories and fluid.

That line of thinking will get you there, but you get more out of the workouts by incorporating intervals. You can swim hard for more of the set, more than you could by going straight through, and swim with better form much deeper into the set. You do want to keep the breaks rather short though, then your ability to control form sort of resets fairly quick so that you maintain the good form and your body still sees the workout as rather close to going harder continuously. Do more work consisting of 50-200m intervals on say 5-15 sec or so rest. If you can set this up as a send-off interval, even better. Sometimes get in some work with some fast 25's and 50's to help you find your form at faster speeds even more so.

Swimming development can flatten out rather fast if you only do continuous swims all the time. And even though your goal is to just finish, I don't know of anyone who wouldn't mind a bit more speed or conditioning to make the day more enjoyable.

2.4 non stop? I did none, but I did several swim session that were longer in time than I spent in the water at IM (1:11), and very close in distance. I might have done a couple 4k sessions along the way but I didn't always track total distance in my log so it's hard to pull that data.

I did 0 2.4 mile swims. My plan had me do like 3600 yards at most.

For bike I rode 98 miles one time and a few 70-80 mile rides

for run I ran at most 2 hours straight then 1 hour bike then 1 hour run in that order.

Everything seemed to work out ok for me in IMCDA

my plan had me taper on the swim with more specific sets in the last 2 weeks. The 4 weeks before, I went from 3 swims/wk to 4 swims/wk

Zero.

I have some open water swims, but they are only about a mile long.

Pool workouts are only about 2,500 yds. A little less leading up to the race.

None yet. I've done a bunch of 2 mile OWS workouts, and a ton of 1.5 mile swims.

I'd like to get at least 1 full length swim done before the IM, just as a confidence booster.

Done at least 15 4000m+ swims this year ... 4k is chump change for me so follow your plan and don't worry about others.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
