Elite 3140 | Subject: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight Been having an increase in flats(mainly rear tire) recently that has really taken the enjoyment out of riding and making me a little neurotic for IMLP....I can fix them but would like to get at least one century without having to replace a tube or worse a tire......seems like every ride recently I get at least one flat.....so I am just looking into a few things other than just bad luck I am 6'2" 195-200 lbs (of sheer muscle, well not exactly lol).........I am using gatorskins in IMLP and believe it or not I have flatted in them recently, ON NEW ONES ALSO! I used to inflate them to 120, which I learned was too high from there site prior to the flat incidents and probably just a coincidence I lowered it to 110. How much does tire pressure play into , flat prevention? or does it not matter as long as you are not so low to pinch flat? for my specs does 110 psi seam reasonable? or if you are around my size what psi do you run at? thanks Edited by FELTGood 2013-07-01 4:33 PM |

57 | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight I'm 6'2 195-200 lbs. I ride at 120 psi front and rear. I train on Gator skins which helps, I also removed the stock rim tape and replaced with Velo cloth tape. In my opinion the Velo cloth tape made all the difference. No flats for over a year since tape change. Alot of variables when it comes to flatting though. Good Luck! |

Elite 7783 PEI, Canada | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight I'd be looking into something other than tire pressure, especially if it's always the rear. As suggested, check your rim tape. I kept getting flats with my front and I couldn't find anything wrong anywhere. I ended up replacing the tire out of desperation and the flats went away. There must have been something in the tire that I couldn't find. |

Member 388 Miami | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight I was getting lots of flats too (1 or two every ride) and it was really frustrating. It turns out it was my rim tape that was doing the damage... Make sure your rim tapes are ok before you start looking into more drastic solutions (I changed my tires, switch my tubes to latex rather than vinyl, I rode at different psi, etc). |

FWIW - I race on 23mm race tires at 100-110psi and commute on 25-27mm cheap tires at 70-90psi with no issues at 185lbs. Shane |

Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight Agree with others that your tire pressure is likely fine and you have another cause of flats. Either something stuck in your tire or faulty rim tape. |

Elite 3140 | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight Regarding the rim.tape......how do I.know there is a problem with the rim.tape....I do not.feel spokes poking through? |

Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight Rim tape is mainly to protect the tube from the edges of the spoke holes (or prevent the tube from buldging into the spoke hole)...not really the spoke itself. Are you pinpointing where on the tube/tire/wheel you are getting flats? That should be the first thing you do when you get persistant flats...then it becomes 10x easier to find the cause by either looking at that portion of the rim/rim tape, or the tire. If you're getting flats all over the place...then you either have really bad luck, a really crappy tire, or ride on really crappy roads. |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight Here's my personal experience: I always used the max just because, not going off of anything. Then someone told me I weighed so little there was no need to go 130 PSI. 90-100 would be enough and there would be less vibrations. So I went to 100 PSI. Flat after flat after flat. Went back to 130. 1-2 flats in 1.5 years on 130, a bunch in a 2-month period at 100. I went to an IM week before last and asked the tech on race morning to inflate to 130 and he said no and I told him no, no, look at the tire, it's rated 130, and he said that wasn't it, that it was not recommended, and I told him my experience and that I ride at 130 PSI and he said the opposite was usually true (less flats) and that was weird and grudgingly inflated to 130 PSI. No flats during the race. |

The only reason why I don't really max it out is that if it's too maxed out, I can feel the rough roads more. Less psi, less "bumpiness" of the ride. Agree!! Even when my tires are at 110-115psi, I feel almost threw off my bike if the road is bumpy. |

yeah, the tech and the 'someone' were correct x2. Plus, the rolling resistance actually increases when the pressure is higher than optimal. plus you get a rougher ride. If you were getting pinch flats due to insufficient air pressure... it's possible that your gauge is off? this is an often posted chart

Took me a while to realize where I should be pumping my tires to. At 150lbs I'm usually right around 100PSI, but on rough roads I drop it down to 90-95PSI. Lower rolling resistance = speed. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: What is the recommendation regarding tire pressure vs body weight I'm 6'2" and 195 lbs and have been riding Conti GP4000S at 115-120 psi, it's been over 2,000 miles since my last flat. Actually I'm not sure I've flatted in the Conti's yet. |
