I'm curious of how others feel about this. How do you feel about race participants doing shots of whiskey right before a race starts? Post Augusta 70.3 I'm seeing pictures of fellow triathletes doing whiskey shots before the race. I personally feel that it is wrong. I also realize that 1 shot is probably no big deal as far as being intoxicated. It just looks bad to me.

Couldn't care less. Considering a single or even a couple shots isn't going to do much to the average participant, I cannot see where anyone who is not into it should care either.

I've got a lot more in my life to pay attention to before I need to be that critical about how others live.

Meh.  Wine was available at the "aid stations" at the first Olympic marathon.

I also agree with Daniel.

As long as they're not getting sloshed so as to be a danger to others... have at it! Race your race, let them race theirs.

If my performance in pool, darts, and golf are any indication, I'm guessing my swim and bike may see significant improvement with a shot or two of whiskey on board.

Looks bad to who and why should these guys be trying to impress anyone? My vote is that we are doing this as a hobby and the point is to have fun.. If that's what does it for them, good deal. I haven't tried it at a tri yet, but the most fun I've ever had at a race was after accidentally getting completely schnokered before the Warrior Dash.

My concern is that people see this and think that there is some advantage to drinking whiskey for endurance sports. Ill advised people can be very impressionable, and this encourages other ideas of consumption.

I relate this to the jazz artist, Charlie Parker. He was a drug addict (heroin, I think), and all aspiring saxophonists thought you needed to take this drug to be able to produce that calibre of music.

Some of my teammates did a local 8 hr mountain bike race and one of the other team was passing out electrolyte bourbon hand ups at the top of one of the climbs.

Electrolyte bourbon = shot of bourbon with a Nuun tablet dropped in it.

Mountain bikers have all the fun.

As long as someone's not intoxicated where they would be a danger to themselves or others, I prefer not to judge.

Most of the races I've done have some type of alcohol available after the race.  Not sure how that's much different since all those folks then get behind the wheel of their cars to drive home.

I've done a "fun" local 12K race where the local track club actually served mimosas and beer at one of the aid stations.

At the end of the day I see the issue as the responsible use of alcohol.  All things in moderation.

Mark

I've always thought an awesome prank would be to replace cups of water with bottom shelf vodka at about halfway on the run aid stations.

Talk about seeing people vomit.

Really.  Because I play multiple instruments and had multiple people that I looked up to, I should have wanted to do cocaine, heroin, etc......     Where did you come up with this one?  Talking about taking a leap.....

At my first "HIM" (which ended up having the bike course cut in half due to snow, and I switched to the du), some campers had set up a whiskey shot aid station a few miles into the (half marathon) run. It was hailing at the time and in the high 40's, and I was really tempted but had visions of getting GI issues or tipsy. But one of the pro women doing the tri who had just passed me (du had a big head start, obviously) partook!

My buddy said his coach in college did this at mile 20 of his marathon race (meet/race, whatever they call it in college cross country). Handed him a cup near an aid station, the guy downed it and it was whisky. Coach said something like "wake up, this is where your race starts!"

Dude ran a 2:xx:xx something so it must have worked.

I've done many a-race where either the beer at the finish line is free/included, or they give you 2 beer tickets (Rock N Roll races have this) so you can enjoy a few after.

And I guess you guys have never Hashed or been to beer miles, beer runs (we have a weekly run called "Joggers and Lagers"), relays like this? Ya'll are missing out Cool

As a non drinker, I do not see the point of taking shots before a race, but whatever. If that is what they want to do and it doesn't put anyone (including them) in harms way, then go for it I guess!

Not really. I don't drink and don't understand the attraction but that leaves more for the rest of y'all.

I usually get a couple really close friends at the end of races that give out free drink coupons. At least until I give away my coupon, then I'm back to the friends I had before

Ah jeez - that was kind of tongue-in-cheek. I did not mean to offend anyone who is abstinent or struggles with alcohol. Not sure why I am apologizing. I enjoy races where people (responsibly) throw a few back. Not for everyone, sure. But they are fun for some.
