Hey Dave,

.....  You mentioned that you 'performed better in the swim.'  Then you said your legs never felt right on the bike and your run was less than you expected.  I am wondering what your swim splits were in relation to your training swim splits?  .......... As an alternative thought, I don't think you hit a wall, however I question if you may have been 'running out of gas.'

For low intensity exercise, your body can store up to 90 minutes of glycogen, give or take.  However, it is possible to fully deplete your glycogen stores in as little as 10-20 minutes with high intensity exercise - the length of a 650 yard swim for a newer swimmer?.  .....>A sprint triathlon (or near sprint in this case) is a short enough race that I think a pacing issue may be more the culprit for you feeling like you 'didn't have it' than food choices before the race.

Just my humble two cents.

Thanks for your comments. I agree that my pace was an issue and maybe not the only one. I don't have a good reference point for my swim pace yet, but I do know that I swam harder than I do in training. I'm currently training at your week 7 plan of doing 100's with only slight rest between reps (the sprint distance swim plan that you suggested to Kris) . I'm sure that the effort expended in the swim was part of the reason that I was not able to push my run pace as much as I hoped.

The other things I'm thinking about are my low energy level on Saturday (day before the event) and that I was never comfortable sitting on the spin bike. Bottom line is that yesterday's event uncovered some specific areas that I need to work on.

Pretty solid week of training for me. This is the last of two build weeks leading into a taper phase and the HIM in Florida in mid-April. So, while my total time spent training didn't change much, the intensity was dialed up considerably.

I had my first track workout of the year on Tuesday with the Run Wenatchee group which made me feel old and slow, but it was good to stretch out the legs and run. And it's always easier to do a track workout with a group. Our basic workout went as follows:

1 mile warm up
Drills/stretching
8 X 200 at 5K pace with 200 easy running (no walk) recovery
4 X 600 at 10K pace with 200 recovery--light jog/walk if necessary.

Once we got warm, we were basically running the intervals at about a 6:40/mile pace (1:20 400's/50 second 200's). Much slower than where I left off last year, but a winter of slow running is really good at training you to run slow!

Another full week this week, then the taper starts....

Weight = -2 lbs to 160.5 = 25
660 minutes training for = 13

Total = 38

Hi James, not a good week, but it is what it is.

90 minutes of training: 3 points
No change in weight: 5 points
Total = 8 points

One more traveling week to go and then can get back to a semi-regular routine, such as it is with me. 10 miler race on Saturday. Still haven't signed up as I get back late Friday and the race is at 7:15 and I have a board meeting at 11, but it is one of my favorite local races and it would at least get me out of bed and a workout done before I woke up. Have to decide by Wed sign-up deadline.

Snow in the forecast for tomorrow... when will it end? (hush, Scott)

Not a good week training-wise for me.  My motivation has been down a lot lately but this week it seemed to have disappeared completely.  At least I lost some weight - not sure how that happened but I'm not going to complain about it.

2#'s lost = +20
no gain = +5
140 minutes workout = +4.67
total of 29.67 for the week

I was up very early this morning. Woke up at 3:45. Got up for a bit and then tried to go back to sleep. No go. Decided to get up at 4:30am. I'm sure I will be falling asleep by 8:00pm tonight.On another note, it's nice to have my bike computer working again. I'm working to get my cadence back up to race standards. For me, this is in. The 95+ range as much as is reasonably possible.Have a great day everyone.

You lost -.8 pounds? I like it. I've got to get a better scale. My digital scale only gives me half pound increments...which I hate. I figure with that kind of rounding it can be off by nearly a pound but I can't tell (161.1 and 161.9 both show at 161.5). What's the model?

Hey Steve,

When our scale died a couple months ago, we stepped up and got a good one.  It measures weight with 0.1 pound resolution, body fat, muscle mass, water weight, and bone mass.  It tracks eight users and will sync with a smart phone app so it is easy to track history.  It is a Weight Gurus scale.  Here is a link to their website - http://weightgurus.com/bodyscale/.  You can get it exclusively at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  I think we paid about $50 for it so not terribly expensive.  It is worth every cent!

I am hoping today is the last day of very chilly weather in our area.

I'll be out of pocket for the next few days.  Will try to get in some swimming & running but past attempts during out of town events haven't been very successful.

Here was our Tuesday track workout last night.

1 mile warm up
drills and stretch
4 X 400 with corners easy, pace pick ups on the straights
6 X 800 at 5K pace (3:20-3:15) with full 2:00 walking recovery between each
half mile easy easy cool down

There was a group of younger guys out there that I just couldn't hang on to....they were running the 800's at about 3:05. Too fast for this gray guy. But there were two other guys close my age (early 50's) and a woman in her 30's that went stride for stride with me around the track. It was fun in a sick sort of way. And there were plenty of other people putting in the laps running slower at their respective 5K paces. Bottom line: pain loves company.

Train fast to run fast. Get to the track if you can. Dial in your paces. Don't over do it.

Hey all:

Hope you all have a great weekend planned. We're almost in full Spring mode up north (although it's raining today) so we're getting awfully close to being able to put away the indoor trainers until Fall.

For me, this is probably my last full workout weekend before my HIM on April 13. Next week I'll start into taper mode. My plan is to run light at lunch and swim hard tonight. Saturday morning will be a three hour ride followed by about a 35 minute brick run. Sunday will just be a solid one hour run, maybe with a light swim thrown in if I can get to the pool. In any case, hopefully the rain will stay away so I can ride dry tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Race season is almost here!
