OK... let's do this.

Story: My name is Frank (uziel5000 here in the forums). I'm 38 and the father of three lovely daughters (6, 4, 3). I have been overweight all of my life. After my daughters were born I took my health seriously enough to start doing something about it and out of left field, I started running in 2012. Out of left field because up till then, I was certain I hated it and avoided it at all costs. But, against all odds, I stuck with it. I'm slower than the tectonic plates but I run and in January 2014, I ran and finished the Walt Disney World Marathon. While still overweight, I have gone from 320 to somewhere around 270.

I have been eyeing the prospect of doing a tri for quite a while now, but have stayed on the fence mainly because I had no bike. Not even a rusty "Kmart Special" hiding in the garage so I have been secretly lurking these forums for some time dreaming of the chance to start. Well, I solved that problem a couple of weeks ago by getting a road bike and have been slowly aclimating to it and I have the pain in the butt to prove it. So a tri this year is a goal for sure! By the way, I have been blogging about my fitness journey over at The Fat Runner in case you are interested.

Family Status: Married (10 years next April) with 3 daughters

Current Training: I just finished a training cylcle where I ran the Philadelphia Half Marathon. My goal was to finish under 3 hours and managed a 2:50 so I guess it was pretty succesful. I'm currently getting used to the bike before I "officially" begin a triathlon training plan.

2013 Races: Divas Half Marathon - 3:26 (in a tutu no less)

2014 Races: Walt Disney World Marathon - 6:43 Philadelphia Half Marathon 2:50

Weight Loss: I have been making small changes and it has brought slow but steady progress. This year however, I plan to take it a bit more seriously.

Happy New Year!

I'm doing ok. I've been away from the forum for a little while, but I'm back. I had a serious case of burn-out after the Princeton 70.3 relay (7 races in 7 months). My training for the last couple of months had been scattered and varied at best.

I'm not a fan of New Year's resolutions (over 70% are forgotten in the first month), so last week, I recommitted myself to training for a race. I am registered for the NJ State Olympic tri in July. I also plan on doing the Long Branch half marathon again this year in April. So now I have some training targets. Beyond July I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm considering either a full marathon or maybe (just maybe) Princeton 70.3.

Welcome aboard Frank! Glad to have you! Are you in the Philly area? There are some great tri's in south/central Jersey that I've done. A couple are really great first-time races too.

October 8, 2014 ~ 379.2

And THAT is with not being able to workout because of the sprained knee.

Nice job! That's progress in the right direction!

That's been my problem too! Too tired to train, followed by tired because I didn't train.

I got out for a run the day after Christmas. It felt great (slow, but great). So I followed that by a trainer ride on Saturday and then another run Sunday. Then we got invited to a triathlon swim class on Monday morning. Spent an hour in the pool doing drills and swam 2000 yds. It felt really good to back in the pool. I hadn't swam since September.

Now I'm feeling really good. I've loaded some BT training plans, I'm making a race schedule (less intense than last year). I'm going for quality over quantity of races.

Have any of you worked with "coaches"? I guess they operate by email or something. Someone recommended it to me and was wondering your opinions were. I just started back in the 2 swim, 1 bike, 3 run.

Donna

Donna,

I have not worked with a coach. One of my co-workers started with a coach about a month ago. He has done 70.3 and is training for his first marathon. He likes the coaching and says it's helping. I think he's paying around $200 a month. They call, text, or message online. He uploads all his workouts online and she reviews them and provides feedback. For me, I'm just a "weekend warrior" and trying to improve myself. I'll never be a pro or race at a high competitive level so I'm not working with a coach. I guess it really comes down to what do you want out of it and will a coach help you get that?

Happy new Years Everyone!

While I didn't make my weight goals at all for 2014, I actually had a pretty decent year. I started in the middle of my 260lb plateau, and ended the year at 257.5. That's about the only real bummer for last year. I finished my first 2 sprints (they weren't pretty, but I crossed the line). I also completed the 40mi course for the Tour de Cure in Memphis (my first experience with "hills"... ouch!). My Dr. cut both my HBP and Diabetes meds in half earlier this year as well. I may not be seeing a smaller number on that little square plastic torture device that was built by Satan himself in the depths of Hell, but I AM winning the fight.

I have my training plan to jump back on on Monday. It's the 2S, 2B, 3R that worked for me last year, but I'm training at Oly distances even though I am sticking with sprints for one more year before I move up. I remember making plans for races and having to change and add and delete, so my list is by no means in stone, but here is my tentative plan for 2015:

Warrior Dash: 5-2 in Amity, AR (This is more for fun than anything else. It's also close to Hot Springs so the wife and I can make a weekend of it)
Memphis in May Sprint: 5-? in Tunica, MS (The casino/hotel this was held at closed right after last year, but the race is still supposed to be on)
Mighty Mite Sprint: 7-18 in Forrest City, AR (P2P race that I had to back out of due to injury)
Riverbluff Sprint: 8-8 in Nashville, TN (This course kicked my butt, and I want REVENGE!)
St Jude HM: 12-5 in Memphis, TN (I just really want to finish a Half Marathon and this seems like a good candidate and for a good cause)

I would also like very much to log a metric century (62mi/100km) be it in a supported race, or even unsupported with my wife by the phone... just in case...

As far as weight goes, I'd like to see myself down 26lbs for next year. That's not big at .5lb/week, but it would get me in range for my first weight goal of 225.

Hi Guys,

As new years is the time for new resolutions I'd like to join your group for motivation and accountability as I lose weight, and get my fitness back again.

STORY:

My story is a long one, so here is the cliff notes version.

I'm 30 years old, and live in Auckland, New Zealand

My triathlon journey began way back in 2009. In June I weighed 300lbs. It was too much, I dieted and started running, by the end of the year I ran my first half marathon in 2hr 20min and weighed 220lbs. in April 2010 I did a duathlon (8km run, 80km bike, 8km run) and caught the multisport bug.

Over the next few years my weight yo-yoed up and down, and I completed 5 Half marathons, 7 sprint triathlons, 1 Oly, and 1 Half Ironman. For anyone interested, my race reports can be found here: http://andygetsfit.blogspot.co.nz/p/race-reports.html

I was at the peak of my fitness in the summer 2013-14, I weighed 207lbs and completed my Oly and HIM

Since then however, I lost my mojo, gained almost all my weight back and lost all of my fitness. So I'm beginning again, pretty much from square one.

FAMILY STATUS:

Just married, in November 2014. No children, although there is likely going to be a puppy joining us in the next few months.

CURRENT TRAINING:

Starting from zero. For the next few weeks at least I'll just be running as I get myself used to working out regularly again. I'm aiming to run regularly, some days morning and night, but for a short duration per run. As my cardio can't handle a long run yet, and neither can my over weight body. I am a bit nervous about long runs putting too much stress on my knees etc. before I lose some weight.

2014 RACES/ results

No races in 2014

2015 plans and RACES:

The first race on my calendar is going to be a local sprint tri on April 19. The plan is to lose weight, workout consistently and get back to a fit, healthy state.

WEIGHTLOSS:

Currently I'm 293lbs. My ultimate goal would be 175, but at the moment that's dreamland stuff. So my immediate goal is 220lbs. Apart from the increased exercise I'll be using myfitnesspal to track my calories. Initially I'm aiming for 1500-1800 Cal/day. As i get fitter and am able to workout more that will be reviewed. This is what I did when I got to my fittest, and lightest, back at the start of 2013.

I look forward to talking to you all, and achieving our goal together.

All right, a few new folks to the board...Welcome!

Well, my week didn't exactly go as planned; winter finally hit here and so that put a hitch in my plans. I got two runs in, one bike, and a snowshoe. My diet was pretty good for the most part. Over the course of the week I was down about 2 lbs. This week swimming starts. Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1 1/2 hours each day. Hoping to get two bikes and two runs in as well.

I have been having trouble getting motivated to get on the bike trainer. Just not something I enjoy too much, I prefer the outdoors. As a solution, I bought an inexpensive pair of studded bike tires someone was selling locally. My plan is to ride my bike two mornings per week, regardless of the weather. I have enough gear to get me through my 11.5 mile (each way) commute no matter what the weather throws at me, and now I can ride my mountain bike when the roads are a little snowy/icy. The trickiest part is that I have to ride in the dark in the mornings and 5 of the 11.5 miles are on county roads (with one mile having no shoulder). I'm pretty excited to try these studded tires out, but it will have to wait until next week as my wife will be out of town the days I don't have swimming, and I will have kid duties then.

The winter bike commuting also plays into one of my New Year's Resolutions: Last year, I rode about 1400 miles on the bike, this year I want to hit 2,500. I also want to ride the same gran fondo again this year and take and finish in less than 7 1/2 hours (an hour off my total time this year). My tri goals include finishing an Oly and beating my 2013 time in a local sprint. My running goals include running 500 miles in 2015.

Have a great week all, and a strong start to the new year!

Happy New Year all

Welcome all you new folk. We are a pretty friendly bunch.

I started out the new year with the flu which hit Christmas Day for real. I did nothing but cough and sleep for a week. last week I started doing a teeny bit of strength work that made me feel like a new born kitten. I am starting back training in a very limited way this week. Hopefully I will recover fully this week and be able to jump back into my HIM training plan next week for real.

My Thyroid levels have been off and I am at the highest dose of thyroxin that my body weight will allow, but I still have symptoms of low TSH. My Endocrinologist suggested diet may be the source so He and my GP suggested trying out a restricted food intake for a month then adding back food groups to see if there is any change. So. I am doing the Whole30 program this month. Gotta say, it isn't that bad but I do miss my evening wine-down. The up side, I will more than likely lose some weight and that is a GREAT bonus. This will NOT be a way of life for me, however. Unless I have a huge metabolic problem, life without cheese is not very happy

Happy Monday all. New Week, New Chance!

Uziel & Bullfrog - A little late, but WELCOME!

Robin: I'm not sure how much this will help. My grandmother either had a very damaged thyroid, or had it removed alltogether, I can not remember which. But, the point is that the only thing she took was a kelp tablet. It may not get you off the thyroxin, but it might help.

Rick, Thanks! I have looked into that. The reason the kelp helps is with Iodine deficiency. Iodine is necessary for proper functioning of the thyroid. Lots of people have low Iodine, but you have to be careful about supplementation because too much is really bad. That is why they started putting iodine on table salt. That gives most people the amount they need. It is funny, I just thought this weekend about that because I use very little salt at all and then I use Kosher salt (cause I can a lot and that is what you need) or Sea Salt. Both of which do not have Iodine added. Hmmmmm.... I am going to have my iodine level checked this week when I get my annual physical. Taking Iodine can keep thyroid hormone levels from fluxuating wildly.
