Just a small update. I am just logging some easy miles and then I have surgery on the 19th. I'll have to take some time off but exactly how much will just depend on how quickly I heal and how good I am at following directions. The typical is 6 weeks but I am crossing my fingers I'm the exception to the rule

Once I am recovered I will where that leaves me fitness wise so that I can plan my races.

Hoping the surgery and recovery both go well, and you recover and rebound quicker than expected.

I hope the surgery and recovery go well.  Listen to your health professionals and don't rush back into things!!

The first TT of the year is this morning.  It's 7C degrees, raining and winds are 30-50 km/hr.  I'm out!  I'm not really bothered by those conditions individually but all 3 together makes for no fun.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!  I may have missed it (or you may have not said for a reason), but what's this surgery for?  Whatever it is, I hope the recovery is quick and you can get back to your running soon!

Just piling on the best wishes, Adrienne - if your recovery is anywhere near as speedy as your running, you will be back at it before you know it!

Salty,
I hope you get through this setback quicly and are back to activity sooner than you hoped.
Health is more important than fitness, although they are often related, sometimes they are not.

Get well soon.

Anyone have ideas on why a switch to scm would cause a lot of struggling in the pool? Masters uses 2 different schools and the one is adjustable. A few weeks ago that pool switched over to scm due to it being meters season. My speed has steadily regressed over the past few weeks. Particularly in that pool, even though it's the "faster" of the two when both are scy. My pacing between the scy and scm is about 4-5 seconds off of what it should be. And I can't keep up with the others I swim with Tues & Thursday. One in particular is very close to the same speed in the workouts, but I'm clearly behind in the scm pool. Not a fade throughout the workout either. It's there from the start.

Thanks all!

It's not a huge deal. I have a cyst just above my tailbone. It's been a total PITA (literally and figuratively) while running because my running shorts rub and it bleeds every single day. I was just waiting until after the marathon to get the surgery. Because of the spot it's in, the recovery is much longer than I thought it would be. Also, to be sure recovery doesn't drag out out any longer than it has to with multiple surgeries, they are doing an excision with open healing. That means it will have to be cleaned and packed daily (I know, ew.)  I'll have to miss at least a week of work and am unclear on how long it will be before I can run.

On that note, happy Monday all!

Is it affecting your timing going into the wall / causing you to do poor turns?  You can easily lose a few percent just from that.

Salty, good luck with the surgery.  I've had the old packing the wound thing.   That is a trip.

My weekend about killed me.  Saturday was my wife's birthday, and she wanted to go to Disneyland.  Sunday was mother's day, and she lives north of Santa Barbara (three hour drive).   Woke up early and ran 8 hard on Saturday then spent 14 or so hours on my feet, in line, etc.  Sunday woke up and struggled through 2 hours on the bike and then drove the 6 hours back an forth for lunch....

Not complaining as I am grateful to have these kinds of problems, but I need a weekend from my weekend.

Foot is strange.  Last week the old injury was flaring up.  This week, I thought Saturday would destroy it, and it was a bit sore, but ran this morning and it's absolutely fine.

Cavendish put the band back together.  Omega pharma quickstep has Mark Renshaw, Tony Martin, Petacchi, Tom Boonen... they're going to be tough on the sprint stages.

I don't think so. Got used to the way everything at the deep end looked before finishing the warm-up the first day of the change. I've been looking more directly at the wall as well.

That does give me another thought, however. I don't have that agonizing feeling of everything being that little bit farther since then, but I wonder if it could still be in timing. But more with developing a feel for about how long things *should* take? My instinct tends to be to go more conservative if something isn't as familiar. And at times I have been able to move right along with some short things. Like 25's & 50's. Or even some of the 100's the first day. And I did hold up well on some late faster 100's yesterday (set was alternating bigger, moderate sets with faster 100's spaced in). Well for most of each 100 interval, faded at the end of each.

Look out for this kid Arnaud Demare from FDJ.  He's only 22 and will be racing his first TdF.  Cav may have the strongest leadout, but I think his days are numbered as the strongest sprinter.  The new breed (along with Kittel) seem to be much more explosive.

Renshaw flatted during the laps, did he make it back for the lead out?  I don't recall

I was watching him at 4 days of Dunquerque (i think), he's dominated that race

Just out of curiosity, do cyclists generally do the short really fast stuff while they are younger and then move into long stage races and endurance stuff later (like in running) or is it totally different?

I think it's generally the same.  A road race sprint is generally fast twitch muscles which tend to have more spark in your younger years.  However, because it's usually at the end of a 4-5 hour stage/race, the aerobic/endurance element does come into play.  Also, a more experienced rider may know how to stay out of trouble and not waste energy closing gaps.  Also factor in that when you're trying to win stages in a grand tour...you have to manage your fitness and recovery over the span of 3 weeks.  So again...experience and endurance does come into play.  The good news is for sprinters they can take a few days "off" but they still need to finish each stage within the time cutoffs.

Yeah...rarely do you see a guy sprint out of a bunch finish, sit up with 30 meters to go and blow kisses to the crowd, and still create a time gap.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
