This reminds me of those folks that started a 100 mile running challenge, over the course of 3.5 months, and you got a belt buckle and certificate upon completion. edit: Also, just for fun I keep a >26.2 sticker on my truck. Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: How long of a Marathon did you do? I have all kinds of race T-shirts from China and Taiwan that have the characters for "marathon" and the race distances ranged from 5K to the actual 26.2 mile distance (the Beijing Marathon). At least in Chinese, it apparently just means a distance event, not necessarily even running. In this case, perhaps "Ultra"refers to the beer, not the run. Edited by Hot Runner 2014-02-13 5:55 PM |

Expert 1130 Fernandina Beach, FL | Subject: RE: How long of a Marathon did you do? It makes people feel good. Whatever. I do agree it's misleading but doesn't take away anything from marathons I've done. Similar to the guy who saw my IMFL jacket and told me he did IM Augusta as if they were the same. I know the difference, let him think what he wants. |

Disagree, since Ironman is an actual brand. And I don't think anyone that completes a 70.3 is going to be out there saying "I did an Ironman!" (I'm sadly sure I'm wrong about that.) Someone also commented about mini-marathon. The 500 Festival Mini Marathon (13.1) has always been billed as a mini-marathon. But nobody around here(and by "around here" I mean, Indiana, and not Beijing) refers to a 5k as a "mini marathon" |

Veteran 732 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: How long of a Marathon did you do? That is weird. I mean, how much harder is to to call it the Mich Ultra Half-Marathon (trademark). On the other hand, when casual acquaintances ask when I'm doing my next marathon or Ironman, sometimes I correct them and tell them it's a half-marathon, or a 5k fun run, or a sprint triathlon. But sometimes I don't have the energy and just say "next month". |

Not sure what difference that makes one way or another.

Regular 1161 Hamilton, IL | Subject: RE: How long of a Marathon did you do? yeah, the 13.1 Marathon is trademarked or whatever. That's still lame, though, because IronMan has always been a trademark, the word marathon has been in existence and meant something else, so to just tack it onto the half-marathon distance and call it a trademark is lame, IMO. Of course, I get all pissy when I see Chicken Fried Steak on a menu. What the heck is the deal with that. why not "Fried Steak"? What does chicken have to do with it? Anyway, I'm registering: "1.0 5K" If anyone wants to pre-register for my Pabst Blue Ribbon 1.0 5k®, I'm offering half-off until the day before. The race is 1 mile (not 1k as the name might imply, don't want to have any confusion) and you get a can of beer in a goody bag (actually just a burlap sack) along with some coupons for Aldi and 20% off of Dollar General running shoes. Offering free tattoos at the finish line by some guy named Scott who uses his prison-made tape-recorder tattooer. Colors offered for tattoo are: blueish black, and black. |

A week or two before a local 10k. They hear us talking about running all the time and about my brother in law training for local marathon races in the hopes of getting his time down to BQ in the next few years. But have somehow managed to live 60 years without understanding the basics. The upside is that I can now talk about being in preparation for my May 1/5th IronMan. |

At least your in-laws were interest and had the right sport. This is from my first IM race report: I woke up early, packed my bags and headed south. Four hours later I was back home. And I’ve already had an interesting thing happened regarding my feat. As I got close to town Casey called and said she was talking Jamie to the pediatrician to have her checked for a sore throat. She had another meeting afterwards so I said I could meet her at the docs. I was talking to Dr Teng and seeing me in shorts and tee-shirt she asked how come I was not at work today. I was all proud and told her I had done an ironman in Louisville yesterday. She got all excited and in her oriental accent said “Ohh, I never metta anyone who did that!” She came over to me and took my hand and said “Let me congratulate you! I want to shake your hand!” I was kinda going ‘aww shucks’ when she added “So, what did you learn to cook?” Huh? What? What did I cook?! “Uh, Dr Teng, I did an ironman triathlon. I think you are thinking about the iron chef cooking school.” |

Member 178 Sioux Falls, SD | Subject: RE: How long of a Marathon did you do? Originally posted by Afletcher NOPE! I know people who completed a 70.3 that was an "Ironman" branded event and now called themselves an "Ironman". I've done several Ironman branded HIM's and any time someone calls me an Ironman I'm quick to correct them that I am a HALF Ironman, and that there is a big difference. I don't want that label if I haven't earned it. I think it can be misleading to people outside the sport, but why anyone would call THEMSELVES an Ironman, or a marathoner, when they've done shorter, is beyond me. Most people ask me when my next marathon is, even though I've told them repeatedly I've never done a marathon and I'm a triathlete.... Some people. |
