So I recently have started using strava and have managed to hold my own on the segments. But there is one climb I do all the time and have the 5th best time but I think the record holder is holding his strava device in his car as he records it. It is a .5 mile stretch at a 5% grade. We all average around 13-15 mph up the hill but one guy posted a speed of 35.6mph. Do you think that is possible a .5 mile 5% grade climb at 35.6mph??? Thanks.

there are plenty of cheaters on strava. If you have concerns with a segment you can click a link to report it and the Strava crew will look at it. Typically a run like that (3x faster than the next closest) and doesn't have any HR or power data is bogus.

Sorry looked at my time again a put up a 16.4mph speed. And I usually hold my own on club rides and triathlons. I usually manage to drop the group on rides. But this post is over twice as fast as me.

I've had some pretty fast bike rides recently as well per mapymyrun. It's on my iphone so it's easy to use for other things as well. I did a triathlon once and the fastest guy on the bike had a speed that was almost twice as fast as the average rider. Funny since it was a two lap bike course. If you're going to lie, it has to be believable.

Don't get upset about it. Flag the ride if you want but there are people that post cheater rides on strava purposely because they know it irritates the heck out of people that take it too seriously.

Doing the math with something like the power calculator, the person would have to do something like 1700w for close to a minute to do that. At 150lbs.
Froome couldn't do it :-)

As Jason suggests, report it and i am sure they will remove it.
Kind of silly they even allow it. They have all the data needed to know it's wrong.

i hate the people who upload their bike rides and runs and crush all the segments. there are way too many of those around here.

flag the segment if you want. a dead giveaway is no HR/cadence data, or a very even speed through out the segment, especially on a hill.

I hope I did that right. I was wrong I'm an 14th on this one I'm getting my hills mixed up. Says his watts were 795. Like I said I'm not so much mad as I am curious. The second fastest is around 20mph. Maybe a pro came to Okinawa for one day.

If you zoom in to include just before and just after the segment you can see that for a short time before their speed was close to zero and then within a few seconds accelerates to 40-50 km/hr and then right after the segment drops back down to zero.  Either they jumped into a car or latched onto the back of one.

Flag it.

Agreed with above. There are several flat speed parts right at 30mph (50kmph). I bet I could guess the speed limit on that road.

Just flag it as a vehicle ride.

Funny thing. The speed limit on that road is indeed 50kmh. How do I flag it?

I have the 2nd fastest time on a 1/3mile KOM run course near my house. The fastest is at 2:00/mile. It's clearly not accurate...but I dont really care. Strava segments are cool to compare yourself against where you've been. If you live in a big metro area like me, you dont have very many KOM unless you're a pro...

I once drove a bike course a couple months before the race because I was in the area. My intent was to export the GPX file and convert it to a ride file for a Computrainer, which I did. So I had a few weeks to get familiar with the elevation changes. Sometime later while I was uploading to Strava, I still had that file on the watch and it transmitted. I didn't catch it until after the race when it showed a second best personal time even though I only biked it once. So it might be just an honest mistake.

One time on a flight my Garmin turned on in my bag, and I got a pretty hilarious run split.  A marathon in less than two minutes ftw!

I deleted it of course, or did I.....?

Certainly! I'm sure most people on there have made the same honest mistake. Flagging a ride does not automatically ban them...it just removes that one ride. No big deal.

To flag a ride, open the original ride file at: http://www.strava.com/activities/100295029#2148042559, and click the little wrench icon near the top left, under Overview and analysis. Then you have to give a reason...vehicle was an option.

It happens pretty often. People leave it on by accident. Just flag it and they take it right down. It is usually pretty obvious and isn't malicious. I have a couple pages of local KOMs and I pretty much get an e-mail once every couple weeks during the summer saying my KOM was taken and then usually check it out and check out the rider to see if it is legit. If it is an average guy with no other KOMs and he managed to smash something by a big margin you pretty much know it isn't legit. Also you can usually see if you look at the analysis where there is a time gap from when they packed their bike in the car prior to driving off.....I also don't live in a big city so if you are local and fast, I probably know your name and you probably have some local race results to verify.

I once got a KOM on a 0.5 mile hill climb 8% grade up to my neighborhood, by quite a bit of time. I was proud of myself and patting myself on the back, but when I told my wife about it, she looked a bit puzzled, did the math, and asked my how I managed to go up that hill on my bike at 35mph. Then I realized I had my phone strava app on while I was driving. Fortunately, you can delete your rides which I did promptly after sheepishly coming back down to Earth.

Last year I was doing one of the mileage challenges during the TdF. I happened to be browsing the leaderboard for the challenge and noticed that the top guy had clearly just stravaed a trans-atlantic flight from London to NY...

Flagging a ride is easy, and pretty much always gets the ride removed. I'd say a solid majority of them are people who forget to turn their computers off before they drive home after a ride.

Thanks for the advice. I flagged it. We will see what happens. I'm not sure if it was an accident or not. What I find I do by accident more often is hitting record without having my gps enabled. Which off course results in a manual entry later.

This is the part I have trouble with. You can only crop if there is a map.

I often ride, and then later go to the gym. I turn the gps off at the gym, but often forget to hit reset. Then I notice, that I have like 10 hours logged because it logged all the time between the morning ride and the evening gym. I hit reset to get my gym workout, but my morning ride looks like it was 10 hours (not moving time though) and I can't crop it because there is no map between that time. Worse if it is gym to gym or something because there is no map, or no not moving time at all. My monthly hours are all out of wack and sometimes look really high. I've had the folks at strava fix it manually before, but sometimes I just forget to email them to get them to crop it. I'll have to look at this manual entry option.

Sorry, I've hijacked the thread.

I think the thread is about dead...so its not a highjack, but perhaps an annoying revival!

You can still edit those by opening in notepad as a text file. Then after you save, rewrite the file type as .tcx...Also some programs have more user friendly tcx editors. I've used the one in Garmin training center to merge, split and crop files. While it wasn't nearly as easy to use as it should be...it was better than opening in notepad and trying to make sense of that wall of numbers!

In order to let this thread slip softly into the night, feel free to PM me if you have any issues.
