Forgive my faux pas if this has already been discussed.....but what do you conspiracy theorist think happened to that 777?

Here are a few of my theories:

1. Alein abduction

2. David Copperfield - he made a 747 disappear so he has a 'history'....

OK, jokes aside, my real concern is terrorism. It’s looking more like a highjacking. I can imagine terrorists putting a nuke on it and flying it into Israel...or some big city. Don’t even need a nuke….fill it full of conventional munitions.

My initial thought was a sudden loss of cabin pressure but now I suspect terrorism -- someone had to turn off teh transponder.

It had to be the pilot ... or the autopilot.

If it is terrorism or a pirate situation, what's taking so long to get a ransom or whatever? I'm not at all ruling that out or shooting it down, just curious why no one has taken any credit for it.

I think it was the 777 they wanted not the passengers. One possibility is they flew it to some remote island....

Maybe they are packing the plane with explosives to fly it into some terrorist target?

But I agee with you that if there is something like this going on, it behooves them to do it quickly.

So I just read that one of the passengers that had a stolen passport has been tied to human trafficing.

I think I'm more inclined to believe the alien abduction.....

Interesting story to follow. I still tend to think the final answer will be less exciting that most of the theories being thrown out there - accident seems pretty unlikely at this point, I think pilot suicide is next on the likelihood scale, then hijacking/terrorism (IMO).

What's most amazing to watch/read is just how poorly our news outlets vet any stories anymore. Every random guess/theory seems to be getting front page space on every new station and website, only to be debunked or replaced hrs later. I'm not surprised, just fun to watch it in real time over so many days.

Is it just me, or am I too much of a conspiracy theorist (really I'm not) to think that our spy sats would know exactly where it was and where it went? Or is it really like that scene in Patriot Games where there are windows of opportunity to view...?

Forgive me for being uninformed about military logistics, I am just a poor PM who likes to think the world is smaller than it is.

I am thinking pirated. Anyone else see any web chatter about some high value cargo on board? Like cash or gold? Can't remember where I read that.

I've not seen that but it sounds plausible.

How about this….the pilot flies to some remote location and lands.....his partners take passengers off the plane at gun point. They take all the (valuable) cargo, valuable from passengers’ luggage, all the cash, jewelry and valuables of 250 passengers and they fly off in a smaller plane and disappear....leaving the plane and passengers stranded on this remote location/island. I’m sure there are plenty of places to semi-crash land a 777.

I'm not sure what they would do with a plane.  I'm no expert, BUT, the transponder tells you what plan it is.  So if it shows up in the air radar as the 777 that's missing?  Red flags.  If they turn it off and a 777 "shows up" on the radar of any advanced country with no signature or flight plan?  They are not going to let some random unknown plan fly into their country.  If they get a transponder from another plane?  Again, a radar signature of a 777 with a gulfstream signature?  No way that's not getting shot down.

I just don't think you are flying a missing plan loaded with explosives anywhere near a major city of any country with an air force.  It's getting downed the second it crosses into US Airspace (or any other advance country).

MAYBE plausible, but very doubtful (unless someone can say otherwise).  I'm guessing the runway requirements to land a 777 are pretty substantial.  Long, wide and asphalt/concrete.  Some dirt strip in the jungle won't handle it.  Maybe a long stretch of highway with no power lines or trees?...  I'm guessing something like that is rare on a remote island.

Don't those things basically land themselves now based on the electronics at the airport and on the plane?  Landing one by hand would take a level of sophistication that would be hard to obtain by a group of pirates.  Sure, you could find a pilot and throw them on a simulator, and have an airfield constructed for them in some remote place.  But that's a LOT of resources to spend just to get some gold or something else valuable.

I still think it's a plane that lost it's way due to some failure of  and same failure probably made it crash.  Maybe the pilot go it down in one basic piece but it sunk right away so little debris or oil/fuel slick to be found?  Black box also failed...

If you semi-crash land and are not worried about damaging the airplane, I think you could land on a much lesser runway....might rip the landing gear off but if it's flat, you should just slide to a hault......or maybe land in shallow water......like that plan did on the Hudson.

Wondering about terrorism directed against the Chinese government--the plane was a code share with a Chinese airline and passengers mainly Chinese. There have been violent incidents within China supposedly involving Uighur separatists within the past few months that seem to be taking the fight outside of the area where they have generally operated--that could indicate some outside involvement in planning the attacks, training, etc. Beyond that, the Strait of Malacca IS known for piracy--but those would have to be some pretty well-educated pirates to handle the technicalities. People here are pretty freaked out about it--we (including me) fly back and forth to Singapore a lot for shopping, events, medical care, etc. and KL is a common transit point for several budget airlines en route to elsewhere in SE Asia and Australia.

There's a rumor going around here that one of the passengers' cell phones is still ringing when called. Haven't seen this in English coverage so not sure where they are getting it--maybe the Vietnamese or Korean press.

Really amazing that this has happened. I keep thinking about Oceanic flight 815. LOST.

I one theory that transponder was turned off and it flew to North Korea.

Here's part of an article on that and why it supposedly means nothing:

Unfortunately, the ringing phones don't mean much of anything at all.

When you place a call, hit the send button, and your phone starts to ring, it "doesn’t mean it is ringing on the phone of the person you are calling," says wireless analyst Jeff Kagan.

"What it means is the network is at work, trying to locate the party you are calling," he says. "It rings once, twice, three times, and if it finds the phone, it delivers the call. If it doesn’t find the phone, then the call is disconnected.

"Family members over there are hearing the [ring] tone and they are hoping, but this is not a sign of anything. This is just how the networks work," Kagan says.

From here:

"The 777 is capable of landing on small air strips and on relatively unimproved surfaces, such as packed dirt and dry lake beds."

Not a conspiracy theorist here, but for as large as that airplane is, it only requires around 5,000 feet strip to land - which is surprising.

For as large and capable as commercial jets are, it amazes me how agile and nimble they can be.

The runway requirements for this airplane vary. Operational landing weight, engine rating and customer configurations, pressure altitude, wind speed/direction, runway gradient, runway surface and condition ( wet, dry ) flap settings, to name a few. Provided the plane landed at sea level, empty, on a dry properly built runway, it could be done just under 4000 feet. I'm not certain which exact model 777 it is, but that could change it too. If you never needed to use the plane again, it could be even less. If they landed it on a surface other than a typical runway you're going to need more length. I imagine a dirt surface would wreak havoc on anti-skid and auto-braking capabilities. It is also going to play hell on the engines since the potential to suck up nice rocks and other FOD ( trees, goats and such ) could do some serious grounding damage.

This is one of those deals I don't even care to follow until it is over.  Every network and every news feed has a different "expert" spouting off and lining up to get paid......and the idiots all contradict each other and make the misinformation level HUGE.  No thanks.
