Age Group Rank = 26/27
Pre-race routine:

Drive in from Redding in sheer terror, hoping just not to get swept. NASTY elevation changes!
Event warmup:

Walk to race start from parking lot.
Run
  • 3h 41m 28s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 16m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

HOLY CRAP. Go north of San Francisco and run the Marin Headlands. If you can run it, you are a mountain goat. Or Dean Karnazes. The rest of us walked up and tried not to fall down the nearly vertical damn faces. I saw at least one fellow who injured himself. I offered to walk with him but he told me to go on, and I alerted race officials at the bottom.

BTW flat Mountain Dew never tasted so good.
What would you do differently?:

TRAIN IN SAN FRANCISCO. Holy shit.
Post race
Warm down:

Knee seized up and I had to sit still for a minute before I could continue. Holy crap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

THE HILLS!

Event comments:

There was no food afterward and they didn't have my shirt. They had to send it to me later. Kind of embarrassing, considering these were the "championships". I ate my Clif bar that was in my pocket and drove the four hours back home to Redding.

Honestly, if you're going to have post-race food, make it for everyone, not just the 50K and 50 milers. The rest of us half marathoners were hungry too.

The best part: I SPOKE TO DEAN KARNAZES. OMG! Karno himself! Damn that man is incredible. BEST PART OF THE WHOLE RACE!

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.
