Subject: What do you call your bike?
As a newbie I just learned that almost everyone of my friends have named their bikes. Girls have male bikes, guys have female names for their bikes. I felt my bike is too masculine to give a female name so I am still thinking about this.
Have you named your bike? What name?

Mine is named Amber, a porn star name as my bike looks hot and loves being ridden hard and fast.

Nope. I also don't name my cars. I actually have never heard of bike racers or triathletes naming their bikes. Do people in other sports name their equipment?

It does kind if sound harsh but not meant to be. I'm curious whether the people who name their bikes are also more likely to race I'm a costume. This is another thing I think is funny but wouldn't personally do.

My friends who have shared the names of their bikes are all quite serious, some placing quite high in their age groups. I was considering Katharina and Anastassia for my bike, but looking at it, it just wouldn't be right...I might settle for Gonzales (as in Speedy) hahaha.

My bikes do have names. Well, three of them. My white road bike (that I ride in Vietnam) is the White Terror. (It's my cat's nickname.) The red road bike (that I ride in the U.S.) is Red Rover. (I used to be really good at that game as an elementary kid--the holding on with a death grip part.) And my blue hybrid (a mishmash thing that I bought off a bike shop owner--it has enough gears to go straight up anything and can go 20 mph for a sprint) is the Blue Bomber. My Vietnamese commuter bike (light green, bell, basket) is just a bike. I consider them to be male--not sure why.

I'm not very good at naming my bikes, but my wife is good at naming hers…

Bob (black with black logos.. Black on Black..)
DeeDee (Diva Dama, hence DD)
Cammy (lots of neon colors on her tri bike, she said looks 80's, hence an 80's nickname)
Pinky Manhattan (the bike has bike accents and was bought on Manhattan)
Old faithful (her first real road bike, she had that for years and it always works)
Beatrice (a word game on the Swedish word "kärringracer", freely translated racer)

Can't remember her other bikes (yes, there's more!).

My new Fuji is primarily a white bike. I'm calling it 'White Lightning'. Hopefully the name will compensate for my lack of speed.

I have a red P1 named Cesar Celerino Cervelo.

"Celerino" is Latin for "fast" (although I'm fast in name only...) and Cesar because I wanted a sexy boy's name so I could make all the "I like to ride him long and hard" jokes. =)

I just call it The Beast.

It has both positive and negative connotations and it is the sane name I have called every bike since I have been actively training (as opposed to just riding around).

June, sometimes June-Bug, but June is short for "June's Mortgage Payment" since I bought her on May 31.

I thought all bikes, like cars, were girls....

My old hybrid I rode to work for ages was also named 'The Beast'. I think from one year when I was cleaning it up in the spring and exclaimed 'the beast awakens'.

Then when I bought my new road bike I decided it would be 'The Beast 2'. Even though it does not fit its personality at all. But I still use the name when working up a hill, typically saying something like 'come on you little beast' or 'get up there ye wee beastie'.

I think naming and talking to you bike is the most normal thing in the world. I know the pros and elites would find it foolish as they swap out bikes on a semi-daily basis. But it works for me.

My first bike for tris was a Trek 1500 with a flipped stem, rotated seat post and clip-on aero bars - "The Rusty Steed"

My next, tri-specific bike, was a 2001 Merlin Aerial picked up for a steal at a bike swap - "The Merlin" or just "Merlin".

After saving and saving and begging and begging, this spring my wife gave the all-clear to purchase my first honest-to-goodness-carbon-fiber-now-we're-cooking-with-gas tri bike, a 2014 Felt B14 - "The Divorce-A-Tron 3000"
