294w for 31:35 got me 38.9 km/hr

To give an idea of the wind, 18:06 at 298w going out and 13:18 at 294w on the return.

nice work. Especially like the even power numbers despite the wind. Where is your FTP these days do u think?

280-285w would be my guess.

do you breathe predominantly to one side?  I find if I'm working hard and breathe mostly on the right that I tend to drift left if I don't pay attention.

I'm a right breather and left puller.   Constant fight to stay on track.

And trust me, that picture is WAAAAAAAY more awesome than it looks.

That IS a pretty cool pic!    Congrats on a great race Rusty!

It's depressing.  I looked at the splits and figured maybe I'd held him off until mile 2.  This isn't even past mile 1!   His advantage on me on the run erased any swim advantage very quckliy.  Bike was a wash, we were two places apart AG.  My goal is to go back in 2015 and hold him off to mile 3

I recommend my strategy from 2012.  Find a line of 10 guys going perfectly straight that you can follow the entire time.

What find helps most of the time is to just aim myself slightly right of where I want to go and sight often.

Originally posted by Fred D Thanks for all the advice folks. I so rarely get or practice ows that I'm almost embarrassed to just realize this issue now. I really focused on going from one buoy straight to the next. I am a notoriously better pool swimmer than ows swimmer, likely due to not swimming straight...

Well, the beauty of WTC is that it's hard to get lost with 3000 other people out there with you.  LOL.  When I did Kona last year, there were so many people swimming around me that I didn't really sight at all.  A few times I popped my head up just to make sure where I was, but I never corrected my line due to sighting.

Fred, good to meet you this morning! I have the same issue, I don't get much OWS practice, and I usually veer pretty bad, and it was worse today than usual. I not only race breathing right, but do 100% of my training breathing right, so I kept going left, so much so that the only way to stay straight was sight every two stroke cycles. My plan was to start all the way inside and hope everyone corrals me in, it's not ideal considering the contact, but I guess it's the lesser of two evils. Hope to see you out there, have a great race!

The casing on my Garmin 500 is heading south.  The rubber on the page/enter button is starting to crack and it sometimes gets a little stuck.  The unit itself works just fine (after 4 years of heavy use), but I decided to order a 510.  I know some were having issues with them, but I can at least run them in parallel for a while if I do have any issues.  Will still likely race with the 500 due to the smaller size, but the bigger screen, more data fields, and bluetooth download options are nice for training.

Oh, and FYI, Nashbar is having a 20% off everything sale which ends today (a few hours).  It applied to garmin products as well.

Curious to know your thoughts of the 510 once you get it.  I love my 500 and I've been tempted to buy another one of I can find a good price just in case mine dies.

The alternative to that is to start left and then you can see the crowds on your right as you breathe.

Fred, this may ot may not be the cause, but.....

Don't underestimate the current in that lake. The winds can create a current that is not even visible.
I have been swimming nothing but OWS this summer. I have maybe done 2 or 3 session in a pool. One day I am completely to the left, the next to the right. I have very good sighting targets. I know there is a current because my times vary.

I have references I use for timing and based on time I can tell what direction the current is going even if it is not visible. I can be 6sec/100m slower, easily in one direction versus the other if I have a head/tail current and it can send me way off to the left or right if it's a cross current. This is in a lake and it varies from day to day

Fisherman said something interesting that I have been experimenting with and maybe has some legs. If I see I am drifting to the left, I try to point my head slightly more to the right. It seems like it could make a difference but I am cautious not to change things too quickly.

The lake I swim in is very much like Tremblant. Deep and dark, same distance North, identical temperature.

And he is on the bike with a 6:05 transition. Also heard from DreamChaser/Bobby this morning ( he is also racing ) he said the weather looked great just before he headed down to the start.

Bobby is #1905. From the looks of their first bike splits they are both executing their plans well.
