Columbia Triathlon Association
84F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 41m 18s
Overall Rank = 1023/2082
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 137/297
Pre-race routine:

Got in a serious car accident right outside registration. Called wife and waited for her to drive 3 hours to help me out.
Event warmup:

Nothing. Chilled out. Got in the water to feel it/test goggles.
Swim
  • 41m 38s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swallowed a shipload of water. Got off course, as usual!
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Learn the buoy colors.
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Bike
  • 3h 00m 35s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.61 mile/hr
Comments:

I took in a lot of calories - 1200
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder? Hard to tell what was right after Saturday accident.
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
What would you do differently?:

Remember where the exit is. Cost me at least 15 seconds as I tried to run out the bike in.
Run
  • 2h 29m 52s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I couldn't summon up any speed. I'm going to blame it on the car accident and NOT the extra 20 lbs I am currently carrying.
What would you do differently?:

Not take in all of my nutrition in the first 7 miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Fire hose

What limited your ability to perform faster:

20 extra lbs. Car accident day before. Not enough intense training.

Event comments:

First aid station on bike was in a crappy place. Less than 100 yds from a sharp right turn. Two times I asked for vasoline on the run it was packed away. But the biggest screw up was the race officials CLAIMING that you had to wear a top in the swim and THEN changing the ruling after the first 14 waves had started. Come on!

I'm impressed you were able to get through this race after the car accident! Bummer for you guys about the miscommunication with the swim tops, although that does explain why I saw a number of guys walking around wearing sport bras!

Nice transitions.

In all seriousness...great race despite the accident the day before.  Hope everything and everyone is OK.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
