Expert 819 | Subject: To pee...or not to pee? OK, first IM coming up at LP in July. I did a HIM for a training day this weekend and had to pee by the 1/2 way point of the bike. I wasn't shooting for any particular time, so I hopped off of my bike and peed inthe woods. What to do when this situation inevitably arises during my 112 miles? Stop and pee, or just keep on riding and clean up later? |

Champion 7136 Knoxville area | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? your bike is going to be coated with grime, sport drink and god knows what by the end of the race anyways... If you've got a little extra water you can just spray yourself down a bit after. On the other side of the coin, most IM athletes would probably benefit from a minute or two stop on the bike... so do what you're most comfortable with. |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? Learn how to pee while moving without getting it all over yourself or your bike. I usually pee about 3 times during an IM bike. Downhills are easiest. |

Member 388 Miami | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? I peed for the first time (training or racing) during my first IM. I was feeling good on the bike and I didn't want to stop, so I decided to give it a try. I needed to pee so badly that it didn't take me much effort to do it. Luckily, I finished 400-500 yards before an aid station, where I grabbed a bottle of water and poured it all over my bottom half. I was clean and ready to keep peddling! |

Master 1484 Sedona, AZ | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? Stop at an aid station. Seriously, is it that big of a deal? At the end of the race are you going to be proud you peed yourself? I have no issue stopping during the race and doing what I need to do. Had I not stopped at IMAZ, I would have had a sub-5 time on the bike. I still would have come in at about the same spot overall and still would not have been on the podium or gotten a Kona slot. |

Gotta agree with above. If you are not in contention for a Kona spot, stop a use the facilities. As Chris said, a minute or two off the bike might be a benefit overall. |

One thing that factored in to my decision though was as I was coming to the aid station I saw someone coming out of the porta potty, so I knew it was empty and I wouldn't have to wait. I get wanting to have the fastest bike split you can, but to me it wasn't worth it. |

Elite 3221 the desert | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? just stop and do your business IMO. unless you're dying to go and not near an aid station (or the port-a-let at the aid station already has a line), you can spare the time. I've done and will likely never do it again. I won't judge others - some people are in to it |

I don't understand the desire to pee yourself on the bike. As others have said, over that distance, how is a one minute pee break going to matter unless your competing for a podium spot which almost all of us are not. |

I don't know about the USA, but in Australia its instant DQ if you pee anywhere but the provided toilets that includes trees, car wheels etc. Personally I usually just wet myself as do 99.9% of the other athletes, I'm saying that because I can't say I've ever seen one of the toilet cubicles ever being used. And I'm sure as shi!t none of the pros or decent AGs do it, to get off your bike when you're sitting on 40km/hr, pee, back on back and accelerate up to 40km/hr is going to cost you 3 minutes. Might not sound like much, but when you're at the pointy end, it's significant. |

Not because I desire it, but I've trained hard for an event, I'm chasing a specific time, why not wet myself? As long as other athletes don't have to wear my urine. And I'm sure 99.9% of the other athletes do the same, I'm saying that because I can't say I've ever seen one of the toilet cubicles ever being used. I certainly haven't seen people popping off the bike every 5 minutes to go wee wees. X2 that triathletes are willing to save time by spending thousands of dollars on bikes and wheels, hundreds on helmets and suits and other goodies... yet unwilling to save time for free has always eluded me. So by that reasoning, if you aren't going for Kona leave your nice bike at home of course... triathletes are way more concerned with looking fast generally |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: To pee...or not to pee? I have no problem with those who pee on the bike. Or with doing so myself at times. You are excreting bodily fluids through the entirety of the race. You already look and smell disgusting. No one will be able to tell the difference, regardless of whether you rinse yourself off or not. You will not be clean with a few squirts from your water bottle, but go ahead if it makes you feel better. Of course, I draw the line at some point: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=150441&page=1# |
