Greenville Recreation Dept.

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 14s
Overall Rank = 23/152
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/22
Pre-race routine:

Showed up early to get a good transition spot.
Event warmup:

Short bike to get the pedals dialed in, .5 mile run, and an easy swim warmup.
Swim
  • 07m 14s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Annoying. I would've finished a little farther ahead in the swim if they would've had a better starting system. Allowed the "elite" group (which I should've joined) to start in the water 15-20 yards ahead of where the rest of us were at the start line, yet we all started at the same gun. I came out of the water right next to someone who started in the elite pack, but I obviously traveled more distance.
What would you do differently?:

Start with the elite wave, otherwise the swim felt okay.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Didn't get out of the wetsuit well.
Bike
  • 36m 26s
  • 11.8 miles
  • 19.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Slower than last year on the bike, which was a real disappointment. Felt weak the entire way through.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure...
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Did this well. Easily the best in my AG, one of the best overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 24m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Surprisingly, this was my best triathlon run ever. Actually passed someone which made me feel good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around waiting for results and transition to open.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
