After fighting bac from having a pulmonary embolism in apil. I was starting to get my race back on.
Running and swimming were starting to come together again. The bike was really starting to cook.
This past Saturday, I must've misjudged the line on a decent into a turn.
I braked a bit hard, and whammo !! Into the biggest rock there on the side of the road.
I came off the bike and slammed into the boulder.
Broken clavicle, 16 broken ribs, and a hip contusion.
This is my 3rd day in ICU.

Race season over.

Dang! Heal up and focus on recovery. Sounds like a hell of an impact and one that could have ended even worse.

Ugh, so sorry! Glad it wasn't any worst (but it still sounded pretty bad)!

There will be other seasons, but it's hard to put everything in perspective! Thank goodness for helmets!

Holy crap! I will say this, though... You didn't just get injured. You got injured like a boss!

Heal up quickly, triathlons aren't going anywhere.

Wow, not fun at all. I lost 2013 to an accident so I feel for you.

Keep your head up, heal up and when you can, get back to it!

Good luck!

Glad you survived to post. Thats a lot of broken ribs which I suspect are going to hurt for a while. Fwiw I shattered my proximal humerus (2nd fx in 6 months) coming off the bike and am 5 weeks post op. Nothing nearly as significant as what you're dealing with but can def empathize. It does get better. The body doesn't always heal as quickly as we'd like but it usually gets the job done. Let family and friends help. You'll need it. Chin up and best of luck for a full recovery.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Next time try to injure yourself at the end of the season so you aren't stuck trying to recuperate in a hospital bed while the weather is nice.

And yeah, helmets are literally lifesavers. I have broken two of them in the last year and a half. I hate to think what would happen if I hadn't been wearing one.

Sorry to hear it. It's a horrible experience, I had mine in August 2012, on my last tune-up ride before a HIM. Smacked my head hard enough to crack the helmet front and back after doing a 360. Concussions are no fun, but for sure I'd be dead otherwise.

The only thing you can do is recover, get through rehab, and get back on the bike. Be glad helmets are so effective, and that you have access to quality medical care. And you have a huge community of supporters who can sympathize.

Far better that your season is over rather than your life.  Hope you recover well.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
