So I am going to be participating(not racing) in an endurance event that is held at a local lake.

http://www.takethelake.org/

The bike leg is one lap around the lake which is 15 miles. Not bad, right?

Well the course goes through at NC State Park. Guess what? Can't ride through the park.

Riders have to dismount and go on foot through the park, which is 3 miles!

So, how would you approach that?

Should I get some platform pedals and wear my running shoes? Should I change shoes?

While I won't be "racing" I want to go fast.

Let me know what you think!

TIA
Nick

I would switch my pedals out with my mountain bike pedal and use my MTB shoes(which you could walk/run in). Maybe just flat pedal and sneakers in this case?

Reading the website I wouldn't want to ride/take a good bike with me for the 3 mile hike thru the park as trail sounds a bit challenging to push a bike along with you. Carry your bike for 3 miles?

Thats crazy.  I would not do a race I had to push/carry my bike for 3 miles.

I have a feeling that you are going to see a lot of comfort and cruiser bikes on this.

Cyclecross!!! not carrying for miles, but there are races where you have to carry your bike.

I would skip the bike and do the 15 mile paddle.

I'll be doing that right after the bike!

Doing the extreme; swim, bike, kayak, run!

My big question got hidden a bit.

Cleats/Bike shoes & change for the 3 mile or flat pedals and running shoes.

My thoughts are it is only 12 miles of cycling I won't lose that much from flats and shoes

Yep, I'd go flat pedals and running shoes. 15 miles is a short bike, 3 miles is a long way to walk/shuffle/run with bike shoes on.

I'd stuff some ultra light racing flats in my pockets and change shoes for the run. Sounds like a blast!

I think that I am probably going to go with the flat pedals and my running shoes. That will be the best compromise I see. Not like a I am a 20mph rider (19.8)

On to the next topic. Just because I don't want to clutter the board with my nonsense.

The Swim (4 miles)

Question here is two fold.

Good or Bad I've been swimming about 30-33 min for the last year or so. I've upped that to 45 min the last few weeks and today I swam 1:30. I've peaked a few times and swam a 29:15min mile (1:52) But, normally I swim the 45min at a 1:59-2:01 pace. So today I stretched it out and kept it at 1:59-2:01 for the entire time.

So I am not swimming hard enough on the short swims or is this really and impossible question to answer with out more detail.

Second Question:
This is a not USTA race, just a home grown event. So, it is wet suit legal or they are allowed. Should I take advantage of that? I would suspect the water temps would be very poolish. 82-86 by late august I would guess.

IMHO, that water is way too warm for a 4 mile swim in a wet suit.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?
