Working parent here with 3 very active kids Pls. give some hindsight. Thank you!!! I've got three kids as well. I wake up really early (around 4am) and get out and back before anyone is awake. I do all my multiple workouts as brick sessions with one following the other. I also have a REALLY patient wife. |

Working parent here with 3 very active kids Pls. give some hindsight. Thank you!!! With 3 extremely active teenagers at home I CAN'T do it. I have time to keep in some reasonable shape but that's it. I could do more, but I'd miss all that they have going on with triathlon, XC, swimming, horse shows, track, school, etc. I'm not really interested in taking away from the time I have left to watch them become adults and proficient at what they do....and besides, they need the support they get from me right now to learn to be successful. In short, everyone's circumstances/priorities are different, but there is no shame in saying it's not the right time....there's quite a bit of life outside of triathlon. |

Regular 287 Levittown, PA | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day I'm the same as 3mar above. I have 3 kids ages 5 to 16. I get up at 3:45am and every day is 2 workouts back to back. Nobody is going to say its easy, it isn't. There are lots of nights when I get 4hrs or less of sleep but still get up to put the work in. There are times on the weekend when my wife and kids stay up later than me, yes even the 5 year old, just so I can get up in the morning for those long weekend workouts. If you want something bad enough you'll find a way to fit it into your schedule. As for motivation........ your the only one that can really motivate yourself. Find a way to get started and see how it works out. You'll know pretty quickly if its right for you. Edited by spiderjunior 2014-09-18 2:09 PM |

Also weight train during my lunch hour. |

For me, doubles consist of swim before work Mon/Wed with after work run on Mon, bike on Wed and some sort of brick on Sat morning. The run and bike are among my shorter distances of the week on those days. I'm almost always done well before dinner and/or before their activities begin. I will often also exercise after dropping them off at their activities. While this may not work for everyone, it seems to work for us. |

Working parent here with 3 very active kids Pls. give some hindsight. Thank you!!! If I don't swim in the morning it does not get done. Up at 4:30 and in the pool by 5:00. Always have training clothes with me, usually 2-3 sets. If I ever finish up at work early I get in a run which is almost invisible to the family. I often have my bike in the car as well. See above. My daughter is on the swim team and swims two hours, 3-4 days per week. If I take her to swimming I get her in to the pool/started and then get in a run. If my wife takes her to swimming I can get in a longer trainer ride. My son is 17 and doesn't want/need as much intervention from me. Weekends: If I can be up and training by 5 AM, even the longest workout is done by 11 AM and the rest of the day is with the family. This is not seamless but it is much better than starting at 8 or 9 and finishing at 2 or 3. I am tired most of the time and go to bed early so it is not without consequence. I am often the first person in my family in bed. It isn't easy, that is for sure. This is my last season of full IM for awhile. Like LeftBrain said, you only have so many years with your kids and so many hours in the day. I think that I have managed to continue to spend time with my wife and kids and I have given them ample opportunity to put the brakes on the tri training. They see it as a part of who I am and tell me not to stop, even when I offer. That is not to say that I occasionally hear about how much time is being consumed by triathlon...... Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day 4 kids between the ages of 4 and 9. I get up at 4 to get the training done. Most sessions are back to back before they are even out of bed. Saturdays are always rest days. Sunday long rides start on the trainer at 4 or 5. Sometimes I split long rides 1/2 trainer and move to 1/2 outside. Sunday is the only day that affects my family at all. They're usually eating breakfast by the time I come rolling in from my long ride. Very minimal impact on family life. Biggest issue for me has been residual fatigue from IM training. Sometimes I have to suck it up for the family, even if I find myself dragging. |

Elite 3779 Ontario | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day Lucky enough to be able to train on most lunches where I can either do a shorter swim or short/mid run. Two a days don't work for longer swims + bike since both of them are ideally in the morning when everyone else is sleeping. If I oversleep or mess up the schedule then I can try and workout some evenings, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.

Expert 1159 Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day Same as most people have already posted. 2 young kids plus a supportive wife. 4am wake up call so I can get in back to back workouts is the norm, which allows me to be done in time to feed the kids breakfast and get them to school. Sometimes I can get in a swim at lunch. And I do the occasional trainer ride after the kids go to bed. It definitely can be done but it's not easy. |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day When the kids were still at home they were the priority, particularly before they started driving and we had to haul them to all their activities. Working out in the morning was about the only practical option back then. No complaints. I always looked at that period as time I could never get back and didn't want to miss anything with the kids for any of my selfish pursuits. Now as an empty-nester my biggest constraint is scheduling enough recovery time. I'm currently doing 2-a-days two days per week, with a morning run/afternoon swim on Mondays and a morning ride/afternoon swim on Saturdays. Depending on work, sometimes I can also fit in both a run and swim on Thursday.

Member 587 | Subject: RE: Training 2x a day It helps to have a supportive spouse. Session 1 is early AM, both weekdays & weekends. Later session often depends on what is going on with the rest of the family. I will take a long lunch if necessary to get a session it before heading home. Since the kids are involved in lots of activities now, I do as others have written. Once I get them to practice I have 1 1/2 + hours to get in a workout. Now when I am coaching then it makes the schedule a little more difficult but you work around it. |

Don't forget the most important aspect of training time - cut out the mindless "entertainment", like TV & hanging out on internet tri sites. |
