At what point in your triathlon career did you or will you shave your legs?

Search YouTube for wintunnel it's by specialised. Over a 40km tt, the say up to 50 to 80 seconds saved by shaving legs.

Before I started triathlons…. I raced bikes as a kid, so I shaved my legs from the point I started to get hair on them.

It's not about aerodynamics for me… I've crashed enough times that I really appreciate the ability to clean the road rash without having anything stuck in it… I've seen the scares from people that didn't shave before crashing, not pretty.

… and once you pull of a wetsuit in a race, you really appreciate not having leg hair being pulled with it. It's like a bandaid expect for your entire lower legs.

Are you saying you have a worse scar if you don't shave???

Unless you are shaving head to toe there's a chance you will get some road rash where there's hair.  I was in a crash and my hip got a lot of road rash.  I'm no sasquatch but I do have hair in that area and if I did shave I probably wouldn't have shaved that high.

I've never had issues with my leg hair getting snagged from pulling off my wetsuit so I don't buy that one either.

To each there own but I never have and never will shave my legs.

I also raced when young so it was no big deal. Next year will be my second year back doing Tri so plan on shaving during the season. My wife made the comment that if aero is a consideration I should probably shave my shoulders etc that are exposed in my tri top . . .

Found the clip, they've also done a few other wind tunnel things which are interesting.

I only shave for races, partly for aero reasons, but mostly for the same reason audiojan mentioned. I crashed on my last IM and I was happy I didn't have hair, all my wounds were disinfected and treated pretty well at the medical tent. I crashed mountain biking when I was younger and they had to shave the areas where I had wounds to properly clean them and avoid infection, so now I do it for them just in case...

I know I can also crash while training, but my wife hates it when my legs are smoother than hers, so I had to compromise here ;-)

With no hair it is easier to keep road rash clean.

When you crash your highest probability of road rash is on your legs and arms, then maybe your hips. You legs and arms not being covered(most of the time) have zero protection. Some people shave everywhere!

Personally I'm not very hairy so I do not shave. I have had to deal with road rash in the past and it's not too bad with the amount of hair I have. If I were real hairy I would shave.

Shaving legs is like IM tattoos. It's your body. Do what you want and don't look back.

I shaved my legs when I started Triathlon. The wind tunnel confirms it is faster. My wife loves it. So I will continue to shave.

Don't shave & don't plan to but that is just because I don't really feel like. Perhaps if I grew up involved with racing on a bike I would feel differently. As for the wind tunnel test....sure in the wind tunnel it can save some time. In the real world, meh. Don't tell me you are saving watts by shaving your legs when you are giving up 3x the savings in position, bike setup or clothing choices.

What?

I have copious leg hair and have raced both with and without it. I assure you, there is no difference when it comes to taking off the wetsuit.

I've been doing this for only a few years and never put much thought into the hairless racers. That is untill I read this article, will probably start shaving for the longer races from here on out..

I think first serious season of training and racing which would have be my first full season.

For a couple years let get grow back out in the fall / winter but now just shave year round. Takes a min or two tops once a week.

I've had numerous crashes racing bikes and changing the dressing is easy without pulling your hair out. Makes massage easy as well. Throw in the culture aspect of bike racing and I'll probably just continue throughout life. Shaved since 2006?

When? After my first year in triathlon. It makes me feel like a more serious athlete. The free speed is a plus plus plus.

We spend a lot of money to get faster. This is one of those instances you don't have to spend much to gain alot.

I pretty much Nair from the neck down. Wife digs it, ladies dig it, and I grew up doing swim team so it seems normal. All about personal preference.

As a competitive swimmer in high school, I had to shave my body. It was the worst experience ever.
I would never do theat to myself again. No matter of what time savings come from it.

Fwtw, my last crash involved only broken bones, no road rash.
