I have done and am signed up again for Lory.

I'm looking to add a second race but not sure which one.

I've ridden Curt Gowdy and those trails are more technical than I like- and the broken granite is really hard on your hands/ butt etc if you part ways with your bike.

So how would you rank in order of difficulty the different Xterras and which are your favorite?

Any suggestions for easier ones other than Lory?

Thanks!

I volunteered at the xterra in fruita a couple of years ago and biked the course the day before. No more technical than lory and lots of fun for all levels of mountain biker. The location is really cool too. They moved the race to september last year and I heard the weather was beautiful.

In the area, Lory is probably the easiest but the run is pretty tough.  Lory can be frustrating because the bike course is so tight and difficult to pass on.  Bear It All at Bear Creek Lake Park (Without Limits) I think would be the easiest from start to finish.

Somewhat harder is XTERRA Buffalo Creek.  I say this only because the bike is over 20 miles.  It's not a difficult bike though and the run is pretty flat.  The toughest I've done with a doubt is XTERRA Beaver Creek; even the sprint is very challenging.  The full distance felt like a half ironman.  It starts out at about 8000 feet and you climb Beaver Creek Resort to T2; thus you don't get all of the return downhill to T1.  The run is very challenging and at 9,000 feet.

I can't attest to any others.  Per Without Limits, Curt Gowdy is much more of a technical bike course than Buffalo Creek or Lory.

Though i've never raced there, I have ridden at buff creek and curt gowdy several times. The trails are some of my favorites. I have been waiting for the snow to melt so i can get up to gowdy and ride again. Bear creek lake park is fun to ride but they cancel or postpone the race whenever the trails get muddy.

Ooh the Fruita one sounds very interesting!

I might have to put that on my list!

Thank you for the feedback.

Has anyone done the Aspen one?

I haven't done it, but I had a friend who did it last year. She's done Curt Gowdy before, and she seemed to think the Aspen one was a more difficult bike course. Apparently there was a lot of carnage - people hurt all over the place during the bike portion. She actually almost backed out of the race after pre-riding it the day before (and this is someone who thought Curt Gowdy was a ton of fun).

That's the only person I know who's done it, but maybe not the best one if you're looking for an easier course?

Thanks for the input on Aspen! Definitely isn't what I'm looking for. I've ridden buffalo creek and really enjoyed those trails- not sure I like the longer distance though.

Immediately I felt attracted by the challenge. I have done plenty of biking this summer and a new motivation, particularly toward the end of the summer, was what I needed.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
