Veteran 629 Grapevine, TX | Subject: Things less talked about... There are things about triathlon that change a person...like removing phobias. #2 is a big part of that. Like #2 in a public lavatory, or #2 in a portelet, or #2 in the woods because you'd rather finish the training run than walk home, or #2 in your trisuit because loosing time on #2 is no excuse and there are no portalets on those last 6 miles. The fact of the matter is digestive issues face most of us. There was a time when I was like "no way man, not in a million years". But the ice is now completely broken so to say. I had a good race on Sunday. Average performance, but good race overall. I was in control every everything except my stomach in the last 6 miles. I want to be ashamed, but I'm not. Like say a hundred mile bike ride. That's like 5+ hours so people must stop to pee; right? Are there port-a-johns at the aid stations? I'm a girl (though not a lady) but still...the world is not my toilet. For me, Everytime I run for more than 40 mins I need to pee. This worries me about transitioning into longer races. |

Another woman here. Hardcore racers will pee on the bike. I do not, although you don't want to borrow my wetsuit. Most races will have well-spaced port-a-potties, but I have ducked behind a tree to take care of business during a race. Also, I take an Immodium before a race for some insurance. |

During training there's no good reason to pee in your pants unless you desperately want to practice it at least once. Just pull over and take care of business. However I happily tinkle during a race because it's just pee. I stay so well hydrated that it's practically just water coming out anyway, but never in a million years will I shite in my pants. Maybe...MAYBE...if it was the difference between winning Kona and coming in 2nd, but under any other circumstances I just can't imagine the misery involved in trying to finish a race, and then face my loved ones afterwards with a full diaper. Not for me. To the OP, did you at least put down a garbage bag or something when you got in your car? |

For the nervous pre-race pee, there's always the lake in your wetsuit if no time for porta-potty. On the run, just "let it go" and then pour water over self or clean with sponges. I honestly would not stop for a porta-potty or tree for #1. Have never mastered peeing on the bike. #2 Hasn't happened yet in a tri, but I would stop, unless (har har) it was Kona and I was winning. Races usually have porta-potties in transition and at various points along the course. I've stopped in a longer ride (the longest version of the Bridge Pedal in Portland). Normally it's not an issue for me up to and including HIM as long as I've worked out my nutrition in advance. Avoiding wheat and dairy before runs or races tends to solve it for me. (That day, I lost it as Krispy Kreme had a donut stop on the course!) Once I was running a HM after having had a stomach virus all week, there was no porta-potty, and I (seriously) went into a bar along the course to use their restroom. Not the greatest race! |

A DNF lasts a lot longer than a good finish and some minor discomfort no one noticed. Kona comments...you need to get to Kona first to earn the right to say something like that. |

I personally tried to plan my #1's on my 70.3. I planned to do #1 before I got my wet suit on, #1 at the 40 mile aid station that had pot-a-potty's. I figure that would get me through the race. With planning I didn't need to do #1 on myself. I didn't eat any fruit for 30 hours before the race. I only ate low fiber foods during that period and didn't have any problems with #2. I ate a high carb meal 18 hours before my race and light meal 14 hours before my race, light snacks 10 hours before my race, and drank a 32 oz of sports drink 20 minutes before my race. My stomach was golden on race day. Wish I could say the same for everything else on race day.

Now THAT is planning! Well done sir. For 70.3s, I just don't drink a ton race morning, hope I get a relatively clean port-a-potty, pee twice in my wetsuit, then usually don't have to pee again until 7pm the evening of the race.
