Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5 am. It was raining pretty hard. Was tempted to go back to bed since forecast was for more rain, and I had yet ANOTHER flat tire on my bike that needed to be fixed before I could race. Turned on the weather channel and decided to have a bowl of cereal and head out to the race site. It stopped raining on the way. Got to the race site, got my goodie bag and numbers, and took my bike over to the maintenance trailer to have the flat fixed. Seems that I have been tearing the valve from the tube. Guess I've been releasing the pump at an angle or pulling it off too hard. At least since I know the problem, maybe I can correct what I'm doing wrong and save $6 every race!
Event warmup:

Not much. A little upper body stretching prior to swim. Had a gel about 20 minutes before swim start.
Swim
  • 23m 56s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim felt good. I didn't freak out this time swimming with others around. It was a little scary to me knowing the all of the men in the race started behind me and would be passing me at some point. I tried to stay out of major traffic patterns and just swam my race. I got bumped a few times - had to stop swimming once because of a pretty hard collision, but nothing really rattled me much. I know that I have poor swimming skills and there was nothing I could do in the race except swim the way I know how and get through it. Swim wasn't unpleasant at all, just slow. Huge difference from last year when I freaked out just because someone got near me. :)
What would you do differently?:

Develop proper swimming form and skills.
Transition 1
  • 03m 52s
Comments:

This isn't a bad T1 time for me. Spent the bulk of the time getting my Garmin, shoes and socks on. Can never seem to get my Garmin fastened the first time and I always fumble with my socks.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more.
Bike
  • 54m 46s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 14.98 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to keep average over 15mph, and I succeeded with a 15.3 average. I lost a powerade bottle pretty early on, but I don't think it affected me too much. I drank a bottle of water and had a gel during the ride. Heart rate monitor screamed at me most of the ride, but I didn't feel uncomfortable. Actually passed a few people on the bike. :)
What would you do differently?:

Not much at this point. Definitely need to work on improving cycling skills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Not much to T2 for me. I use the same shoes for bike and run, so just have to take off my helmet and gloves and get my bike racked. Walked my bike in, but ran out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 37m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough run for me. Had trouble getting and keeping my heart rate down. Had trouble relaxing. I expected the same flat run from last year's course, and was surprised with a fairly hilly course this year. Walked most of the uphill sections and ran the rest. Didn't have a bad pace for me, average was under 12 m/m. Interesting finish.... When I was coming into the final stretch, I saw a man in front of me that I decided I was going to pass. Started sprinting and passed the guy, but couldn't keep the pace going and he passed me back right before the line. I'm still smiling about that little incident. I've never tried to pick someone off at the finish, and looking back, if I had to do it over, I would have stayed on his tail and shot pass him right at the end rather than giving him a chance to take the lead back. It was a fun game at the finish! I was pretty surprised to see that my final .17 miles were at a 8:56 pace. Granted, it wasn't sustainable for me, and I thought I was going to throw up at the finish line, but the point is that I AM capable of running faster.
What would you do differently?:

Did the best I could for right now. Need to build a strong base for next season.
Post race
Warm down:

A volunteer handed me a bottle of water at the finish line - that was a nice touch!
Walked around to cool down a bit. Talked to wsm9363 and met his GREAT family! Talked to my hubby and friend for a little while and stretched out before heading out to brunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My stubborness trying to train the way I WANT to train rather on how I SHOULD have trained.

Event comments:

Good way to finish the tri season. Fun race and great competitors!

Congrats on finishing the race with a fast run.

I'll agree, WSM's family is pretty great (but I'm a little biased).

Hey next time look at the race map they provide on line.  You would have seen that LOVELY little course.  Heck I was glad it didn't go up the hill on the OTHER side, since that one is worse than what we faced.

You know I swam with my Garmin in my swim cap, then put it on as I was running to T1.  It still didn't go on super smooth, but then I didn't have a whole lot of time messing with anything in T1.

Good job on the bike, it is always fun passing people there.

Darn it TNICK, we have worked on this.  You are supposed to zig zag to stay in front of him and trip him if you have too.  I guess we need to practice more.  hehehe.  COngrats on another finish and a race to add to your resume.  Excellant job my friend.

Hey Tammy, I was checking, I think that guy you were trying to out sprint.... may have been one of the Oly competitors.  Because there was no one in the Sprint that was finishing that close to your time.  Or I suppose it could have been one of the Du folks, it is sorta hard to tell with the staggered start times.

I was trying to figure out when I checked the results and didn't see anyone finishing with you.  But that is really a good thing, because that means it was a strong finisher that you were chasing.  To even pass him in the first place would have been great.  Heck I doubt that he would have even given me the chance....

Hey, nice race! I agree, the run was a bit hilly. I sure felt it in my HR.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My stubborness trying to train the way I WANT to train rather on how I SHOULD have trained.

Huh. What does that mean? No, seriously, I want to know.

Congrats on a great race!

Cool that you were able to pick someone off on the run finish. I get excited whenever I do that as it is so rare!

Nice pace on the bike...great job of beating your goal!

Look at all the great stuff you learned at your race...why you get flats, you can run faster than you thought you can, you swam in traffic and were comfortable....all great things to bring into next year!

SHOULD have spent my training time building a proper base and mastering basic techniques.

I DID spend my training time going through the motions to get the training time in and pushing too hard.  Trying to build speed without a having base under me, which resulted in LOTS of frustration and some injuries that could have been avoided.  I still don't know how to swim properly because I haven't taken the time to start at the beginning.  I'm in a hurry to get everywhere!  I need to slow down and take things in sequence - one step at a time.

Great work, and yes you do have it in you to run faster. Build the base, the rest will follow.
