sorry that happened.

Sounds like it was a really crazy day on the water and perhaps the race officials were really concerned for safety.

They probably regretted not cancelling this swim, but instead plucked people out if it seemed like a risk to their safety.

For you, obviously it is a let down, just move on. It is a blow but it will heal in your mind and sign up for another one.

You can look at like the lifeguard forced you to DNF. However if he was correct and the waves got worse further along, you should probably feel as thought he saved your life. You may not have been thinking rationally at the time and he probably was.

Yes it's disappointing, but it is not worth risking your life.

Now get out of bed , and start training for your next event!!!

Sounds like a rough swim and if the lifeguard was correct that the waves were worse further in then he absolutely made the right call. I does sound like the swim should have been cancelled if that many people DNF'ed though.

Go for a run and get your perspective back.....because if you are "completely devastated" and can't get out of bed for two days from DNF'ing a triathlon, you've lost your way a bit.  A good workout will get you on your way back to reality.

As a swimmer, that does look like fun!

There is zero chance that a race would attempt to swim in that for the races in my area.

X2 - and the RD in that race was nuts for letting it go off and lucky as hell nobody got hurt.  Kudos to the lifeguards on that one.

Wow! Yeah, I agree with the above posts. Maybe it should have been cancelled but you are still alive to talk about it so get out there and get ready for the next one.

Do you have the link to video you took the screen shot from? I'd like to see more of what it looked like out there.

I couldn't get that to work. Is it the news feed that's on the FB page ?The water didn't look as bad there but probably still too rough for a tri swim all things considered. That looked like a challenging day all around, what was the air temp?

I wouldn't be devastated, I'd be pissed. If a lifeguard is forcing me out of the water, then there is no way in hell that swim should have gone off and the RD is incompetent.

Just my $0.02, but  I've served as an assistant race director / lifeguard liaison on several occasions.   For most races you know that a fair number of the participants are going to be under-prepared for the swim, even in the best conditions.  The first turn buoy is typically where you have the most drop-outs and you plan accordingly when you stage the guards.

It's always easy to second-guess, but in the conditions in the video I would have recommended cancelling the swim and making the race a du.

The big issue from my viewpoint would be exceeding the capacity of the guards, particularly if the conditions were worse further out on the course.  Better to err on the side of caution.

Mark

Gnarly swim for sure, hard to tell how risky it was for a race but it appeared "very iffy" in the video.

The combination of the dark skies, strong winds and sizable surf are a bit much. Not sure I'd want to deal with 1.2 mi in that water.

You may think you were doing ok on the swim, but the people watching you swim as well as the others swim may a judgement call based on what they saw. Sorry, but you were not as good as those who finished or they wouldn't have pulled you out. You may be as good on the bike and run, but in the swim you were in danger. Be thankful you didn't drown, stop having a pity party, get out of bed, and go get some endorphins flowing with a run, bike, or even a swim. Staying in bed only makes it worse. I failed to finish my first 70.3 as well. Same situation - bad chop on the swim and I called over a kayak to calm my nerves. They pulled me out instead. Was I upset after - yes, but in truth, they could see how badly I was struggling and they knew conditions were only getting worse. Crush the next one. Stop dwelling on the past.

I am not an expert, but I feel like in such conditions they should've cancelled the swim - to make it fair to all participants. I agree that there are folks unprepared for swimming and they may drop at the beginning, but if the weather is risky for more than a half participants, then it make sense to cancel it/changing it to duathlon.

I know what you feel (kind of), because my very best 10K run was cancelled after 4.5 mile because of ...one lightening... That was my absolutely best run and I was extremely pissed. Of course, my silly 10K cannot compare to HIM and the training you went through, but don't give up! Find another one soon and go get that beast!!

I'm a lifelong ocean swimmer and that didn't look bad once you got past the shore break. If you are used to lakes, it's tough to handle rough waves and you really need to understand that many waves need to be gone under, not over or through, like a lot of the people in the video seemed to be doing.

I agree, though, that most people are not experience ocean swimmers and that swim should have been cancelled.

I think there's a difference between the US and Europe to consider here.  It was be cancelled in the US 10/10 times and far fewer, if any in Europe.  Completely different cultures.  Not better or worse, jus different.

I'm curious about the 'don't increase your run by more than 10% per week' rule. Is there a minimum mileage under which this doesn't apply?

How should I go about training for the marathon while also building base in the other two events? Doing this seems like it's causing me to break the 10% rule in running.

Yes, the Dual is a little heavier than Cervèlo’s high end counterparts. But…the price is within reach of the masses and it still incorporates all of the design features that make a Cervèlo special.
