I know it sounds silly but it is part of the agreement with a lot of coaches. It has to do with the fact that the coach is being paid to make up those workouts for the athlete and not for the general public, not the athlete keeping the workout "top secret" so competitors don't steal their training secrets! My coach has the same request. Thus I have not shared here, and there is only a general description (totals and what kind of sets) in my log. It's not because I'm secretive; I've signed an agreement not to share the details or verbatim workouts.

Warmup: 300 swim, 200 kick, 350 pull w/paddles

From my 7 years in the sport I have never come across this. Not saying it is bad, egotistical, or anything of the sort....just never heard of it, maybe giving credit to the coach. I know that my coach doesn't care at all, he actually likes it since it drums up discussion and gives him exposure. I find it even more interesting in this day and age with social media to have that clause in a contract. Everyone posts their workouts in their social apps, many pros give out several of their workouts as well, everyone chats what they are doing.

Look at my w/u in the set I posted. That is a classic Bret Sutton set condensed down into a w/u that pretty much everyone in triathlon has done. Coaches from the olympic level down to the age group level have used that set.

That all said one workout won't give away anything really, its how the workout is structured within the program.

I agree.  Most coaches are fine with their athletes occasionally sharing training sessions, and even encourage it.  The details of individual training sessions are such a small part of the value a good coach provides.  Whenever a coach gets weird about an athlete sharing individual sessions (and promoting the coach's services!), it makes me shrug and think that there's someone who's either paranoid, insecure, or doesn't understand where their value lies.

I don't normally chime in here, mostly read. I coached swimming for living at a point not long ago. I was required to obtain certification level and CEs over that period. What immediately struck me, watching countless webinars and clinics, how much these very experienced coaches shared with public and among themselves. We are talking Bob Bowman, Dave Durden, Dave Salo, Bruce Gemmell.......For those of you that know swimming, you know these names. I named just a few. All it takes for you all to scoot over to USA Swimming website, online education section, webinars galore, all for free, several years worth. Knowledge sharing within USA Swimming and ASCA has been immense driver of our sport's success on international scene. We are a superpower in swimming. Everybody shares relentlessly. Development of Katie Ladecky, Kevin Cordes, many others.....all is out there, public domain, you can read almost day by day,season by season what they do.
This nonsense of "protecting" the information on training is just plain silly. More so, coming from triathlon coaches that in majority cases know very little to nothing about swimming. There is a reason that our state of triathlon in general is not great. One exception obviously is a very well developed women's ITU squad. The coaches there, share a huge amount. It takes a village to develop a group like that. So all of your coaches should learn to share and not feel insecure about it. The more knowledge is out there, the better for this sport.
The sooner we get over that in triathlon the better. This forum has many coaches selflessly sharing their knowledge and experience. Gary Hall is just one of them. Mike from D3......you got some good peeps contributing here. They don't feel insecure sharing. It is good for the sport.

There probably aren't many individual drill sets or workouts that are totally unique to a particular coach.  Sets of 100's are sets of 100's after all.   Many masters workouts are just free-standing alphabet soup stuff. 

At the same time many coaches construct master plans or strategies for the long-term development of their athletes and/or to prepare them for specific events. This is where I can understand coaches to be reluctant to have their workout plans disseminated publicly on a regular basis.

It doesn't mean that they're paranoid or insecure, it may be that they just want to protect their intellectual property.  

As I mentioned in my earlier post, if a coach is OK with it then fine, no problem.  And as you mentioned, many coaches may openly welcome the exposure or implicit endorsement.  

But at the same time I maintain that you owe them the courtesy of asking prior to widely disseminating workout plans on a regular basis.  

Coaches deserve the opportunity to monetize their products and services.  And conversely, if I'm paying a coach to design my workouts, then I won't appreciate it too much if someone else is getting it for free.

Don, as you well know, there is lot of "free" stuff that Terry Laughlin makes available on the TI website, but at the same time you have to pay to get access to other things like videos and other content on the TI Academy site,   I don't think Terry would appreciate it if bootleg copies of everything were being circulated freely..

I would certainly agree that an awful lot of "triathlon coaches" don't know squat about swimming.

Interesting that you mention Gary Hall.  He he makes a lot of his stuff available for free, but a lot of it, like the videos on SwimSwam are just teasers to get you to pay for more in-depth products & services.  It's just another way to market.  Nothing wrong with it, but he makes his living through coaching and there's no way he's giving everything away for free.

I agree completely, Mark.  I said training sessions, not training plans.  Overall plans get into the heart of the value provided by coaches, so sharing them is inappropriate.  As others have said, Individual sessions are of limited value.  People like Terry provide their value almost exclusively by teaching skills rather than coaching through overall programs, so I think it's a bit of apples and oranges, because their teaching techniques can be proprietary.  BTW, I know you know Suzanne well, and have a lot of respect for her.  She shared a good post on this topic in Ben Cagle's thread.
