Just want to make some bikers jealous:
Saturday we had the annual Amstel Curacao Race (http://www.amstelcuracaorace.com/?lang=en).
a 75km race on our small tropical island. Entry is free for anyone with a race bike, and some outstanding pros of this year as usual where invited: George Hincapie, Alesandro Valverde, Frank Schleck, Eric Dekker, Michael Barry, ....
For the pros it was of course a free week vacation for a 2h and somewhat race on the bike.
For me the chalenge was to stay with the pack as long as possible. Of course the pros are not realy racing hard, but the tempo was faster than the normal local races, and after 55km I had to let go ... But until then I did manage to draft Hincapie for 15km while he was taking it easy and relaxed at the back of the pack. When he decided to go up front he was up the pack in a few seconds. Didn't even seem like he had to make an effort ... Ended up finishing 43rd of about 140.

It's an annual event so if next year you again don't qualify for Kona, you can come over to our tropical island and try and beat the cycling pros ! And save 450$ entry fee

Sounds like you had quite a good time ! Does this race have a long history? I'm curious about the small field with such good riders present.

Sounds awesome. I met Michael Barry along with Jason McCartney and Tom Danielson a couple of weeks ago at a sponsor party and they were all very down to earth cool guys.

  • Yeah, save $450 entry fee to Kona, but spend a bajillion (incase you don't know how much that is, it's alot) dollars getting there...

This was the fith year in a row the race was held. there where 18 pros present I think. The rest where tourists that came over specially for the race and locals.

As for travel, you can get here daily direct from Miami for about 400$ (at least that's what it costs to get of this island, it's usualy cheaper to get here) and there are also weekly flights from NY.

Wow, that's just friggin' cool. I doubt I could hang with them for more than a few km, but it would be cool as hell to try.

All that coolness...a race named after two 'adult beverages', staged on a gorgeous island, and stacked with pros taking a little November haitus.   Wow.  Color me impressed!!

Sounds like a lot more fun than the mob-scene at Kona, and cheaper, too.

Man, way to go for hanging with the group as long as you did! Have no idea what kind of wattage is required just to be in the peloton with the tour guys but I'm sure it was worth it just to say you did it. .
