Since Aaron is the shy, quiet (and actually doesn't like attention believe it or not), I'll elaborate:

We went on a group ride before the What It Takes (tri movie) screening in Dallas this afternoon. We rode, went to eat with 10/11 other BTers. We drove to the movie with BOTH of our bikes on his bike rack, chained and locked up. The movie was in a "nice" very yuppie/ritzy part of town and we didn't think much of it. We did think enough to make sure both sets of tires were within the chain and the chain was locked into the bike rack.

We return out of the movie and walk to the car and the bikes are gone. Heartbreak, and anger. We get closer to the car and see my bike lying against the wall--we were parked in a parking garage backed into a wall. His bike was closest to the car, they had to cut the lock, break the bike rack, and remove my bike...just to get Aaron's. We called the cops to file a report. Obviously this isn't high on their list of things to track down.

My bike was my nice tri bike, easily worth 4x's his road bike. Both bikes have PowerCranks on them.

What we know/don't know:

-How did they ride away with the bike? With clipless pedals on the bike and PowerCranks, it can't really be ridden.

-It couldn't have been a triathlete at the movie for 2 (hopeful) reasons: 1. triathletes are generally the nicest people we know and 2. they would have taken my bike instead.

-A box with a decanter/wine glasses was left at the scene. Maybe it was stolen, maybe they bought it, but they couldn't ride/carry the bike and the wine stuff.

-Why the h*ll did they leave my bike? Guess it wasn't their size? It doesn't look like a normal bike?

My reflection: I've left my bike (stupidly) on my bike rack, unchained, while running into the store, gas station, etc. and thought "I hope its ok" and it has been. Very, very stupid.

Aaron is one of the nicest, most inspiring people I've ever met and I cannot believe this happened to him. He cannot afford a new bike, much less a new set of PowerCranks which he adores. I've never seen him so upset and heartbroken.

Dude - that SUCKS!!!  Stolen from your house/garage?  Might want to alert your local bike shop, or at least the one you bought it from, in addition to the authorities.  A pawn shop owner might call to verify.  My LBS on Magnolia told me a story where this happened and they recovered the bike.

Good luck.  I share your pain.

Lara - 2006-11-09 11:46 PM just another thought.. i don't know what you guy's have going in insurance/deductibles..  it might not be covered in your auto policy but it might be covered in a renters or home owners insurance policy...

Lara's got a good point, since it was taken from your car, your vehicle insurance may cover it.  Home/renter, too, but deductible may be too high.  Do you have the serial numbers?  Did you canvass the 'hood?  You did say Dallas, right?

1. The bike isn't worth enough to claim and risk the increase in insurance. The bike is about $500 and the PowerCranks are $1000. Various acessories are about $200 more. Not a huge cost, but still too much to go and just buy another setup.

2. Aaron, John (jcagg90) and I walked several blocks in all directons searching in bushes, parking lots, and fields looking for the bike. No cameras in the parking garage either.

I don't think it'll show up like an "accident".  We had luggage stolen from my car and the auto insurance covered it (minus deductible, of course)

Aaron, that REALLY SUCKS and I'm sorry you had to go through it

**** that guy, he really deserves a swift kick in the nuts. It seems really odd that the bike would have been stolen with the powercrank/clipless combo. I guess yall just need to get powercranks to jump on the fleeb bandwagon . I hope the bike turns up somewhere.

if memory serves it has to be inside the vehicle to be claimed on an auto policy..  anything outside of the car i.e. on roof racks, trunk racks, hitch racks, etc. is not an eligible loss on auto insurance..  it is however covered under homeowners or car insurance..

I had my bike stolen out of my garage. Called my insurance agent and he basically told me that it wasn't worth claiming on homeowners insurance because it will jack your premiums up and just give them an excuse to drop you once you have a claim you really need covered. Also, if your deductible is around $500, you have to weigh if the $1200 that would be covered would be worth possibly losing your homeowners insurance.

I so feel for you, man. I didn't even have a spectacular bike and I wanted to cry when mine was stolen.

My road bike is probably worth <$100.
I'd still be pissed if it was stolen!

Since I believe in karma, considering the goodwill you create with your flag running I'd say that whoever stole your bike is going to be having a pretty lousy year.  What a sh!t.

I agree with Hanloose- very bad year for the culprit, karmically speaking.
