That totally sucks - sorry.

Since the bike has Powercranks on it, I bet the a-holes thieves think the bike is broken and just ditch it somewhere.  If they are not cyclists, I don't think they will know what to make of the Powercranks.  If they were cyclists, they would have taken Comet's bike as well.  You can only hope that it turns up.

Sorry to hear.

That's a good point. I work in Downtown and I'm always in uptown, so I'll keep an eye out in alleyways and such.

Look on the bright side...wouldnt you have loved to see the guy try to ride off on bike with those Powercranks. $10 says he ate it in the first 10 feet!

Also, what kind of rack do yall have? I'm always worred about my bikes on my Yakima...I just dont thint that little built in chain lock thing really is that much of a deterant.

What are you talking about - leaving the bikes on the car during the movie?  You've got to be kidding me.  Bicycles locked through the rack, through both wheels.  Car backed into a parking space against the wall.  This seems to be more-than-prudent risk management.  Just what, exactly, were they supposed to do?

In the car covered up with a sheet or something or trunk and if that was not an option, plan it a little better where you would leave the bikes at home, the go to the movies. That seems safer to me and with some planning, it could have been achieved.

EDIT: I'm not here to argue what they should have or should not have done. I'm just saying, I think it was not smart to leave something worth so much visible. Maybe because I live in LA, had my car broke into many times, and robbed several times, maybe i'm just more paranoid than others.

No, I thought that...for about a minute. However, my bike wasn't taken which I cannot understand.

Although, have you not once, ever, left your bike unattended? Have you left it outside of your house while you ran inside? Have you not left it on your car, just for a minute?

We had no choice since we wanted to ride before. We didn't leave the house until we found the lock (send in a search party!), and didn't want to risk a wheel being taken so we figured out how to safely (what we thought) lock all three together. Its not my fault, or Aaron's that some a-hole knew how to bust threw the lock and break the rack.

You obviously don't know Aaron and the mean part of me hopes that one day something special to you gets taken from you Karma's a b*tch.

Edit: No, we couldn't fit both bikes in the car. So which do we put in the car? His? Mine? Probably mine since its worth more. Then what? They get one, break the window and get another? We couldn't 'plan better' since we were 45 min. from home. Drive 45 min. to ride, then drive home, then 45 min. back to see the movie. Wouldn't have worked, too much traffic.

I don't understand why you would attack me personally and say that you would like something bad to happen to me. All I was saying that in opinion, it was stupid to leave it out visible. I didn't say you guys deserve it or that taking it was wrong.

This board is wack.

I said Karma was a b*tch, thats all. If you don't like it, I don't care. This board isn't whack, I am taking your observation and responding. I could have said you were "whack" for even suggesting such a thing. Had we left them unlocked, thats irresponsible and stupid. We did what we could.

I saw another post of yours that you've had stuff stolen. Were you upset? Were you pissed someone broke into your car?

Yes, we shouldn't have left the bikes that long. But what if it was only 10 min. to go into a store? I've left mine on my rack plenty of times unlocked. I won't again. In fact, I want to trade vehicles with my mother b/c she has a truck with a locked bed cover that people can't see whats in it.

Even if his bike was in the car, they can still see in the windows.

What's the point of that comment, other than to be mean and hurtful? Aaron and Haley are smart people, and if they thought for a second that their bikes would be at risk they wouldn't have chanced it. I have no doubt that they were locked securely. Obviously not securely enough. But from the fact that that wine decanter was left at the scene, the thieves were out theiving--looking for stuff to steal--and probably would have broken into their car even if the bike were inside.

There is often a tendency to blame the victim, certainly not meaning to pile on in that regard, but...

Yes, I have left my bike alone for a second, but never for two hours while I went to the movies. Often these are crimes of opportunity. Sure it can be stolen in a second, but there's a lot more opportunity if they know the owner is going to be absentee for an extended time. And it's a lot easier, less conspicuous, to cut a chain than to break windows.

After this experience, would you do so again? hindsight being telescopic....

Of course, I rarely travel with my bike outside my vehicle, have been known to leave kids home so that the bike can ride inside.

Hope it works out for you guys, that you find his bike or get something from the insurance (which I would definitely look into).

Comet,
You didn't just say Karma was a *****. You purposely wrote something as a personal attack then struck it out so that everything could see it. Mine was an opinion and your statement was a personal attack on me.

Look, I'm over it as I'm sure you are to.

You know what auto, I apologize. I shouldn't have wished something hurtful on you (although technically I said *part* of me wished) as we were very upset last night and emotions are a little high right now.

Aaron isn't asking anything from anyone. In fact, he is just dealing with it. Again, anyone who knows him knows how much he loved those PowerCranks. I'm the one on here telling the story, and yes like run4yrlif said, he would have been the first person to not even bring or leave the bikes if we thought what we were doing wasn't enough.

I'm doing what I can now. Called bike shops, they're on the lookout. We don't know what the insurance will do since he lives in a townhome development that has group insurance.

That's awful!  I'm so sorry!  As the victim of two bicycle thefts (both in downtown Boston), I can only offer this: most likely they didn't ride the bike away, they would dump it in a pickup truck.  Also, make sure the parking lot/surrounding streets don't have any video surveillance.  If the movie took place in the ritzy area North of Dallas (where all the cute shops are), surely the lots/streets by the trolley/restaurants have some sort of TV monitoring, no??  Lastly, if you registered your bike/lock with Kryptonite, see if they have any coverage policy.

I don't ride my good bike to the store/bookshop now...just a crappy ol' Mongoose that I wouldn't care about.

Thinking ahead...be creative...$1,500 should be easy to come up with...perhaps a raffle, design a t-shirt, sell a mug, get a part-time job just for the holiday...you can DO it!

Sorry to hear the bad news. I hope you find the bike on CraigsList so you can go and , well you know... I think the raffle is a good idea. Riedel makes some of the finest glassware in the world with some of their glasses going for $40 and up (EACH!!!) We should easily be able to sell 150 Virtual Raffle Tics @ $10 ea. Lets set a date and put it in announcements. Thanksgiving is coming up soon, and I've got some wine snob friends that would drool over it like it was... a set of Powercranks!
All in favor of a raffle...

Yeah...I have. I just meant that when you say something impugning someone under stress, you have to expect them to get a bit defensive.

And I don't like when people mess with my friends.

At the risk of being cliche here, maybe the slogan on the mug/shirt should be "Ride Like You Stole It."  Kinko's and Kodak Gallery offer print jobs for fairly cheap...I'm sure some BTers would purchase said items for sub-$5.  Makes a great stocking stuffer!

Yes... Check your renter's policy if you have one... call your agent.

I work for an Insurance Company. Theft of personal property IS a covered loss, but it's subject to whatever deductible you've elected, and it MAY be paid on an ACTUAL CASH VALUE basis vs. a REPLACEMENT cost basis, depending on what your specific coverage allows. Talk to your Agent.

ACV would take depreciation. Replacement cost would pay what it costs to actually REPLACE the item.

Make sure you have receipts available to prove the costs of the PCs and the bike itself, as well as any other upgrades you have made.

You should also determine if your rates are going to go up. Find out from your Agent. If your rates are going to increase in an amount less than the net value of your claim, then do it. If not, I'd skip it....

THAT SUCKS.

i think its naive to think that if your bike is IN your car, it can't get stolen. its just as easy for someone to smash a window and take your car stereo as it is for someone to smash your window and take your bike. same goes for garages, basements, etc. if someone really wants your stuff, and are clever enough, they will figure out a way to get it. we still keep the 'good' bikes in the basement, but that doesn't mean they won't get stolen. there was a string of home burglaries through our neighborhood last summer. blaming the victim is just mean.

when my bike was stolen, it was covered under renters insurance. didn't effect our premium at all, actually. deductable was $500, about the value of the bike (it was pretty old), but the bike shops were really good about giving me generous estimates of the replacement cost. they didn't lie, they just gave me the full retail price of the highest priced thing that would be considered a fair replacement. they didn't just give me an estimate for a full bike of similar quality, but also added in upgrades i had made - so, $90 for pedals, $100 for the saddle, etc. etc. i think the total estimate ended up being $1000-$1100, so i had $600 or so to put towards a new bike. if you do go get estimates, make sure they know every tiny upgrade you made to the bike.
