Have you tried calling the manufacturer of the lock, chain and bike rack? Maybe they have a replacement policy. That is who I would be screaming at. Of course remember don't actually scream. Be a really upset victim and try to get as much sympathy as possible. I find that always works for me.

I live in LA and I guess I am paranoid too. I get nervous just leaving my bike on the rack for a few minutes unattended.

It really is terrible that we have to live in this type of world, but that is reality.

I feel horrible for your loss.

I guess I have learned a lesson not to even think of leaving my bike on the rack.

I believe in Karma too. Whoever sells your bike is getting blood money. I really don't understand how they can spend that money and sleep at night.

And yes, as you said, it is only 'stuff'.

Cheers

I am so, so sorry Aaron (& Haley too)!  That just sucks soooo bad.  I have had someone break into my car twice (in dallas actually) and have had stuff stolen.  So, not only do you feel sadness, and anger, for whatever it was you lost, but such a feeling of violation that somebody took your stuff.

For what it's worth, I think you guys did the right thing by locking the bikes up and backing the car up to the wall so they're not easily seen.  That was smart.

Man, I'm just so sorry.  I hope that the bike can be recovered.  I guess now we all have a pretty good idea of what's on Aaron's Christmas list!

And, another upside to this, is that this happened after IMFL, and kind of now that it's the "off season."

If your bike can't be recovered, I hope you get a shiny, wonderful new one!

P.S.  I just got an email today from fit2train that Bicycles Plus in Dallas is having some awesome sales on their trek bikes.  And, if you're a fit2train member you can get an additonal $150 off.  Just a thought.

And, can Jack (ironhead Jack) help you guys out any?

CRAP!  I hate bicycle thieves ... they should all be forced to ride a bike with no saddle up the alps with a drunken truck driver honking the horn behind them all the way!

This is just an idea, but did anyone mention that you could get re-imbursement for your loss from the owners of the parking lot!?!  I am not well versed on US State laws but I do know that around here, disclaimers aside, the parking lot owners are liable for all thefts of autos and their contents on their property.  You made a police report so send a claim in to the lot owners for the bike and the chain.

Aaron, Haley, sorry to hear about your misfortune.  I saw your jeep backed in against the garage wall and thought "that's a good idea".  It takes a lot of balls to steal in that area. There were lots of people around, coming and going.  And you were parked on the ground level.

Hope your insurance covers it.

Sometimes life really sucks.   Just try to focus on all the positives and you will get through it.    Here's a few  I thought of:

  1. Nobody was hurt
  2. They left the more expensive bike
  3. They left the car
  4. At least it wasn't the race bike
  5. Again, nobody was hurt

I'm so sorry, Aaron.  I know how much you liked having your road bike, so you didn't have to switch your PCs on and off your tri-bike!

I know what your bike looked like and I'll keep an eye out for it.   Let me know if there's anything else I can do as I'm local!

Despite all the opinions and armchair quarterbacking, the situation is what it is, and a bike has been stolen.  We've all had a moment (several?) in our lives where we've looked back on something and said "What was I thinking?"  The bottom line is it's water over the dam and you can't bring it back.  Moving ahead and rectifying the problem is the next priority.

My sympathies go along with the rest to Aaron.  You can't possibly meet a more sincere individual.  I hope this is resolved soon!  You'll be back on the road in no time Aaron!

Agreed. We can all just take this as a reminder that there are bad people out there. Easy to let our guard down.

Cheers

I'm so sorry.  Some people stink... bike theives being up near the top of that list.  No matter what the monitary value of the bike, I'm sure it has a temendous amount of sentimental "milage value".  Eventually your new bike will have that same "outfitted-just-right" "broken-in-and-adjusted-perfectly" feeling.  Till then, we're all really bummed for you... and understand that it wasn't "just a bike".

The thing that really kills me about this kind stuff happening, evening though are a lot worse things going on out there, is just the complete lack of respect for other people.

About 10 years ago, my garage was cleaned out by somebody.  Skis gone, golf clubs gone, camping gear gone, mountain bike gone, etc... I get worked up to this day thinking about it.  There wasn't anything that couldn't be replaced and in the grand scheme of things it really isn't a big deal, but like I said, it’s just the fact that some people really don't give a crap about others.  So I guess it really isn't the physical act of the crime that gets me, but what it represents that truly bothers me.

Sorry you have to deal with it.

I just pasted some info on this over at Slowtwitch as well. I think the more the word gets out the better the chance of finding out something. Good luck with this.

I second checking with the lock company.  I know the Kryptonite locks I bought said they would pay for the bike up to XXX amount if it was ever stolen through their lock....

OK so I have only been on this site for a short time and I must say that everyone here is really nice and helpful. I think it is great. Just wanted to make that clear. As we all know, this sport is not cheap and when something like this happens it makes one lose a little faith in humankind, but there is way to get that back and show the douchebag who stole that bike that good can outweight the bad. Therefore, I propose everyone who has posted or anyone else who will post - donate $5 to Aaron.

Yep some of you are thinking that now anyone will post with a story about how their bike was lost but I have faith in the people who participate on this site and in this sport not to hoodwink each other.

Any takers?

Aaron, I could mail you the $ or maybe you can set up PayPal account?

And, no I am not a rich man with vast quantities of wealth, just a regular guy who has taken a liking to this sport and the benefits it provides.

That is my two cents no pun intended.

Without faith and compassion we have nothing.  You're a good man!

Newbie & lurker (been doing lots of reading through the posts though.)

Sorry to read about the bike. That sucks. Good suggestions about keeping an eye on Craigslist and eBay though. The thought I had was why not contact the reporter who did the article on him (the one that was posted here) for an update on what has happened? People who read the article could also be on the lookout for the stolen bike and others may want to help replace it. Just a thought.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I remember when I had my bike stolen when I was a kid...I thought I was going to die, and it was only a $300 BMX bike, not a nice machine like this.  Hopefully it will all work out in the end, just think, if the thieves dropped a $200 wine decanter (I doubt they drink wine) maybe they will ditch the bike as well, once they realize that they can use it/sell it.

On another note, keep me posted on wether you do a raffle or donation, or...?  I am game for what ever.  You two are some of the individuals on this board that make time to answer a lot of questions, and to your point (kind of) Karma may, or may not be a b*tch, but what goes around, comes around, and you two will come out of this on the positive side!  Make sure to keep your heads up

I am also fairly new to the board, but wanted to say since I first saw a pic of Aaron carrying his flag - I tend to read his and Comets blog - since they seem like nice people (even though I have never met them). I just wanted to say that I am sorry to hear about your bike.. Hopefully the person will be caught and get what they deserve in one form or another.

I am now in OK City - not too far from Dallas. Let me know if I can do anything to help.
