rbschlesinger - 2006-11-21 2:40 PM I agree, Jim your penis is not a joke. It is something to be taken seriously. It is only to be used for procreation, putting out small fires, or writing your name in the snow.

Don't forget protesting the war.

...I don't see why it's so wrong for someone to ask her to cover up some. How does that infringe on her rights?

It's wrong the same way it would be wrong for me to walk up to you in a restaurant and tell you to put a bag over your head while you eat because the sight of someone eating in public offends me.

An infant feeding is in no way sexual. Anyone who thinks it is needs to find a therapist yesterday. Interfering with a mother feeding her child and trying to dictate how, when and where an infant can or cannot be fed based on nothing more than a warped sexualization of a normal act is despicable.

Hey, I guess I didn't realize how difficult it was to put a blanket over the child.

Sorry.

I do agree that breastfeeding should not be considered offensive, but what is so wrong about asking to cover up?  The woman was obviously trying to make a point and she got her wish.   It would have been incredibly easy to cover up with a small blanket.  Should she have to?  Probably not, but why create a scene, ruin her family's travel and make a lot of people angry just to get her way?

But she shouldn't have to... period.  WHY does the act of breastfeeding offend people?

Have you ever tried breathing for 10 minutes under a blanket?

If you are referring to masturbating in public, you truly have missed the point.

If you thought I was serious, I'm thinking you may have missed the point.

Ummm... Your milking comment was your first post on this thread and you gave no indication that you were not serious.  I only reacted that way because I have heard others (not in this thread) use the same argument. I am sorry I misinterpreted your vague post.

Peace,

Brian

Why is the attendant taking her personal hangups and creating problems for her employer?

Shouldn't the attendant have just shut up and left the nursing mother in peace?

Shouldn't the attendant have followed corporate policy and not harass the passenger?

Or maybe she had to bully the mom. Maybe she went to the Alexander Haig School for Flight Attendants.

I don't know. I'm not one of those people. Why does anything offend anyone? That's a personal issue. All I know is that we talk a lot about tolerance and this and that, but when it comes down to it, we're taking one person's side or another's. Why are we not tolerant of the fact that the attendant (and possibly other passengers) not wanting to watch this woman breastfeed? Why are we not tolerant of my simple question as to why the woman couldn't put a blanket over her and the child?

Even as a breastfeeding mother, I have a problem with other women who "purposely" expose their breasts while feeding their child to make some sort of "impact" statement. That is just plain wrong no matter what you stand for.

But now you have entered into the realm of judging intentions... how do we know that women are "purposely" exposing their breasts.  If you are breast feeding in public part of your breast will be exposed... ON PURPOSE.  How much is too much?  What if your shirt slips?

And I think breastfeeding in public is always an impact statement... Work against the machine that tells women breastfeeding is unnatural!

Brian

Seriously ladies, if you just start walking around topless more often, the site of a free bo*b won't be an issue anymore.

Its time for change...we can start with the no bare torso rule. Feel free to Tri topless. Its time for change.

Covering up would entail covering the child's head!  What the heck is that!  The little guy needs to breathe you know.  Anyways, how can a breastfeeding child be offensive????  It is just about the most natural thing in the world!

Anyone who finds this act offensive has severe issues and should seek professional help.

Sure, breastfeeding couldn't be a more natural, wholesome act but what's your point?

(yes, I'm being facetious)

There is one side that overrides all here: the child's.

You haven't responded to my comment about having someone walk up to you in a restaurant and asking you to cover up, or to Jim's question as to whether you've tried to eat with a blanket over your head.

Why should the mother be made to choose between making her child feed under a blanket or not feed? Why penalize an infant because someone's sense of propriety is offended by an act that affects them not at all? That's the crux of the issue.

Because I didn't realize that the baby couldn't have a blanket over it when feeding, and I didn't think that by just draping on over the shoulder to help block random viewers was such a difficult thing, as it is appearing to be. It's been a long time since I've breastfed, so hey, I'm not as up on all the physics and such of the task.

As for the paper bag, so long as there were holes for eyes, I could probably make do. However, I would question your motives for it, since you are the one offended by others eating, yet you went to a place where that is specifically what happens. Not quite the same as the situation.

Make a point of looking into a woman's eyes first.  And when you're done, look into them again.

Then none of this will be an issue.

Just bring a bottle on the plane....if the plane was delayed you have time to prepare a couple of bottles and run and get snacks, toys whatever.

Or... Or... flight attendants can follow company policy and let nursing mothers be.

There's an idea. Radical, I know.

I still think i'm right

If we're going to speculate about what bogeyman made her (attendant) do it, I'm going to invoke Ockham's Razor and say:

Breast envy.
