I love this country.

National 'nurse-in' set to protest treatment of mom

On Oct. 13 Gillette was sitting aboard a plane, which was three hours late in taking off, when she began to breast-feed her 22-month-old daughter. She says a flight attendant handed her a blanket and told her to cover up, which Gillette declined to do.

The attendant said Gillette was offending her and she was removed from the plane.

Delta did provide ground transportation and a hotel before rebooking the family on a flight with a different airline the following day.

Gillette filed a complaint with the Vermont Human Rights Commission because breast-feeding in a public place is protected under state law.

I heard about this story this weekend. It was reported that the nursing mom was sitting in the back of the plane (next to last row, if I recall correctly) in a window seat with her husband next to her. So, the story snowballs...

Nursing moms stage airport protests

By JOHN CURRAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- With babies at their breasts, nursing mothers staged airport protests around the country Tuesday after a woman was ordered off a plane last month for breast-feeding her daughter too openly.

About 25 women turned out at Burlington International Airport, sitting on the floor near a Delta Air Lines ticket counter amid signs saying "Don't be lactose intolerant" and "Breasts - Not just for selling cars anymore."

Similar actions were planned at more than two dozen other airports.

"We're not here to blame anyone," said Chelsea Clark, 31, wearing a "Got breast milk?" T-shirt as she nursed her 9-week-old son in Burlington. "It's about raising consciousness about our culture's sexualization of the breast. Breast-feeding needs to be supported wherever and whenever it happens."

I love that Spokes is the first person to respond to this thread.

Shame on Delta for kicking her and her family off the plane.

While I'm not arguing against this woman's right to feed her child, I don't see why it's so wrong for someone to ask her to cover up some. How does that infringe on her rights?

Did Delta maybe go too far? Possibly, but I wasn't there, and I don't know how either side truly reacted. If she got loud or belligerent, there may be other reasons she was removed.

The attendant was fired disciplined so I think it's safe to say the airline thought she went too far. There were no reports the woman was loud or belligerent so that's a red herring.

Why should she have to cover up? The law allows women to nurse in public.

Edited to correct facts.

If it was on a plane, isn't that private property?

I wasn't posting that as a red herring, I was posting it to solicit information (which you provided, thank you).

I'm not saying she HAD to cover up, just like the airline doesn't HAVE to let her on the plane. However, just because you don't have to do something by law, doesn't mean that you have to be discourteous by not at least listening to others' requests.

The airline isn't making that argument so.... And, the airline isn't defending the attendant's decision.

Delta has reprimanded the flight attendant in the Gillette case, and a spokesman has said that women can breast-feed on any Delta plane.

You would think that any attendant would be happy to see a happily nursing infant when the flight is 3 hours late instead of some of the screechers I've sat near on a plane. The attendant is a mo-ron. Let sleeping dogs nursing babies lie.

If women should be allowed to breast feed in public, I should be allowed to milk myself in public.

So to speak.

The point is that the primary function of the breast is feeding young ones.  Society has turned them into sexual objects.

After watching my wife try to contort herself to cover up her breast when feeding our kids, you have to know that it can be very difficult and cumbersome to do just that.

The law in Vermont allows for breastfeeding to be unhindered precisely to encourage breastfeeding, but if you are going to make women feel like they are doing something unnatural that needs to be covered up, then all the more reason for the law.

 Peace,

Brian

excerpt:

Gillette, who lives in Espanola, N.M., said she had taken at least two-dozen flights during which she breast-fed her daughter, River. On Oct. 13, she was flying from Burlington to New York on Freedom Airlines, a Delta commuter affiliate required to follow Delta's policies.

When Gillette started breast-feeding as the plane sat at the gate, the female flight attendant, who has not been named by Delta, demanded that Gillette cover up with a blanket. Gillette said that she was in the rear of the plane at a window seat, with her shirt covering most of her breast.

"I said I would not put a blanket over my child's head," Gillette said. "The next thing we know, there was a Delta ticket agent standing over us. I was just shocked."

Delta provided her family with a hotel room that night and another flight to New York the next day. "Delta called back a few days later and said it does not take responsibility for this," Gillette said.

Delta has until Nov. 27 to respond to her complaint to the human rights commission. If the case is not settled, the commission must consider whether to file a civil lawsuit against the airline.

"Delta as an airline fully supports mothers' rights to breast-feed babies on the aircraft," airline spokesman Anthony Black said yesterday. "We regret the decision that had the passenger removed from that flight, as it was not in keeping with our high service standards."

The company that owns Freedom Airlines, Mesa Air Group Inc., issued a statement saying it supported the right to breast-feed on flights.

It amazes me that a culture that is so into porn, both soft and hard core, is generally so against breastfeeding in public.

Ok, ok, geez.....

Like I said, I wasn't trying to prevent the woman from breastfeeding. I also wasn't trying to necessarily condone the actions of the attendant. I was merely pointing out that, as in all conflicts, it's a two-way street. If there is a law that specifically states this woman doesn't need to cover up, or Delta has a policy on it, then good, and I'm ignorant of such things.

And I don't know that this necessarily has to do with the sexification of anything. I was merely pointing out that the mother could've at least been open to the idea of accommodating others with her actions in a public setting. Is that wrong? I mean, God forbid we should think about the impact of our actions on others.

If women should be allowed to breast feed in public, I should be allowed to milk myself in public.

So to speak.

If you are referring to masturbating in public, you truly have missed the point.  The penis is a sexual organ, as are genitals in general.  Breasts are not.

Breastfeeding is not a sexual act.  "milking yourself" is.  Apples and oranges.

 Peace,

Brian

It's wrong the same way it would be wrong for me to walk up to you in a restaurant and tell you to put a bag over your head while you eat because the sight of someone eating in public offends me.

An infant feeding is in no way sexual. Anyone who thinks it is needs to find a therapist yesterday. Interfering with a mother feeding her child and trying to dictate how, when and where an infant can or cannot be fed based on nothing more than a warped sexualization of a normal act  is despicable.

I agree,
Jim your penis is not a joke.
It is something to be taken seriously.
It is only to be used for procreation, putting out small fires, or writing your name in the snow.
