Elite 2553 Tucson, AZ | Subject: IMAZ training - How's it going? Figured since the IMFL peeps did a thread like this, the IMAZ folks may as well too. If you're on a 20 week training plan (BT or otherwise) your training for IMAZ officially started today! Woohoo! Personally, I'm glad it has started. No more thoughts of "next week I won't have time to do this because IMAZ training starts!" I have a love/hate relationship with 2-a-day workouts, especially the morning workouts. I love getting the workout done and over with in the morning, but I'm not used to getting up super early to get them in before work. 21 days to break a habit, so it's probably 21 days to make a habit, right? 20 weeks seems so long, yet the race feels like it's too close. I know I'm going to be obsessing about it all the way up until race day! So how is everyone? And I wanted to wish you all Happy Training! |

Pro 4206 Los Angeles, CA | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? Thanks for reminding me. I sort of forgot about training. After my DNF at Silverman, I haven't done anything because of school (PT evening program) finals approaching quickly combined with my full time work load. I'll have a 3 week break for the holidays but back to school the early part of Jan. I'm on a wing it IM plan. Obviously it's not working that well (recent DNF) but I have renewed confidence in this next one. Just curious, what plan are you using? The BT one or you have another? |

Yep, I'm on the BT gold plan (the one by Kevin Konczak). Kinda makes it sound like a medical plan or something. Glad to hear you have renewed confidence in this race. I'm still scared out of my friggin' mind! |

It will be my second attempt, i'm 0 for 1 right now. This will be my third. I did IMAZ in 2005, IMCdA in 2006 and now IMAZ again. I see a pattern forming |

Master 1558 Pensacola, Fl | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? My training is really just starting to take off again after a recent hospital visit. My coach and I took it slow in the buildup, so I think the numbers are really going up from this point forward. It really hasn't gotten cold yet, but let me say already...winter training sux! |

Got Wahoo? 5423 San Antonio | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I'm in week 5, beginning of base one - I've been great getting all the double workouts in, but this week I'm having scheduling difficulties - for to do 2 hours on the bike tomorrow and an hour and a half in the pool. Cool, jsut hop on the trainer for 2 hours (ugh), but the plan calls for hills - I jsut don't have the time to ride on the road, so I'm skipping the hills and doing the trainer -
On the bright side, my body is changing quickly and I feel like I'm ready now, at the very least I will be. I can't wait. |

That's what I thought, too. I signed up for IMFL 06 instead of IMAZ because of the winter training. But, after going through IMFL training in Dallas; doing 8+ hour days in 100 degree temps; loosing 5-6 pounds on a bike ride even after drinking 6 bottles of fluid; doing an evening run and the temp is still 95, I've changed my mind. Winter training won't be so bad! Good luck to all of you training for IMAZ! Stay positive. The mental part is the toughest part. TJ Edited by zia_cyclist 2006-11-28 4:11 PM |

Expert 822 | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I'm doing pretty well. I'm roughly on the BT 20-week plan as well and I've been ramping up to it over the last 4 weeks since I got back from my honeymoon. This past weekend was a lot of volume which lowered my immune system and guess what -- day one of the plan and I've got a cold. So I'll be out for a few days but not for long. I know keeping the motivation going for so long is, for me, the toughest part. I hope to keep my season going through next October. So I've signed up for the local tri club and I've been going biking with some buddies. Hopefully training with others will help with the motivation. Mike |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I'm up to about 15-16 hours per week training, all base at or below AeT. Swimming about 12000 yards per week, biking 125-135 miles, running 30-35 miles. I do a Maximum Aerobic Function test every 3 weeks and have continued to see speed improvements working these levels, so my coach is going to stick to this plan and up my mileage over the next month or so before we move into anerobic training. I also have Rock and Roll Marathon here oin Phoenix as a nice training session . |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I'm working up my own plan, which is a true PITA. I've got the weekly hours figured, scheduled my long run and bike for each week, and planned for some periodization, including a few weeks of building before starting to taper. For the first 4 weeks (base 1), I'll be doing base stuff only. I'm going to split my workouts between zone 2 and low zone 3. This is something I picked up from Triathlete Training Bible, which recommends zone 3 in early prep and base phases as a way of getting base fitness while also getting prepared for more intensity in later phases. With field-tested LTs of 178 on the bike and 182 on the run, TTB puts zone 2 at 149-159 for the bike and 155-165 for the run. Swims are just going to be steadily longer sets at an easy pace. At the end of the 4 weeks, I'll do some benchmarking of each event. For base 2, I'll start working on muscular endurance by increasing the intensity of the zone 3 workouts. Of course I'll also be increasing the zone 2 durations. Base 3 will see the tempo work move towards zone 4 and 5a and lots of zone 2 hours, although I'm hoping to move these towards the upper end of zone 2 by this time. After that, I'll work on a build phase where I'll do the same mid-distance workouts for 3 straight weeks, but I'll try to increase the intensity each week. That'll take me into my taper and the race! 1:10, 5:25, 4:10.....sub-11 overall, baby! |

Elite 2552 Evans, GA | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I started on Monday as well. I have a hard time recovering after running. I usually need at least one day between running. Otherwise I'm very positive and happy to be back training. I'm doing the beginner bronze plan. So far I'm enjoying myself. |

Extreme Veteran 527 Jacksonville, FL | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? Sounds like some good plans in progress! I'm in week 5 of my own plan, just finished tweaking out December's plan to account for Christmas and the travelling. (Feel free to take a look at my planned logs - suggestions are welcome!) The plan was derived from books, Tiathlete mag, past 1/2 HIMs, triathlete friends who have done IMs and how I feel about my base. My approach is a build phase that is heavy on the run focus, a weakness. I put a lot of miles on the bike in Sept & Oct while maintaining a Masters swim schedule, so the bike & swim foundation are in good shape. I have built in an R&R week every 4th week. It's difficult to scale these R & R weeks back thinking I need to be out there training more and more but theses older muscles respond much better after some rest. My 1st IM so, we'll see how it plays out...best of luck to all of you out there training! |

Elite 2552 Evans, GA | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I was also doing some base training RPE 1-2 stuff to build up from an injury at the end of last season. I took a break from swimming to avoid burning out as well. I'm looking forward to reading how all of your plans are going and not suffering/enjoying this road alone! |

Champion 9600 Fountain Hills, AZ | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? I had an hour AeT run this morning (8.3 miles @ 7:17pace) and I am off to ride on the IMAZ course this afternoon for an hour and half! I live about 5 miles from the turn-around for the course, so I get lot's of home field advantage and I am always weather acclimated. |

Official BT Coach 2210 Englewood, CO | Subject: RE: IMAZ training - How's it going? Mine is going well. I started with swim/run focus and will pick up the bike miles as the winter moves out. Mainly indoor short rides of z1-3. and longer on the weekends if the weather is nice. Finished base 1.12.5 hours,14 hours, 5.6 (sick) and into base 2 which will be 16.40 hours. Swimming 4 days a week (weakness), running (because I like it the best and can run anywhere), 3-4 times per week, bike 3 right now ( my strength). Did some testing in the pool to find T-pace, and did a run aerobic field test to watch progress every 4 weeks. 2 strength sessions per week, 1 is whole body, 1 is core.Good to see every one is getting in the slow base miles. |
