Tri Take Me Away - 2007-02-27 7:04 PM

I'm training less than I did last year, too, and I am pretty confident I will beat my 14:30 time from last year.

I remember feeling all the doubt all you first timers are feeling now. I remember riding 80, 100 miles and wondering how in the world I was going to run a marathon after that!! I remember my longest run, 18 miles, and how much I hurt after that (enough that I had to get a cortisone shot) and wondering if I would physically be able to finish.

I hate the pool. Hate hate hate it. I am a terrible swimmer but during the race I went really slow because I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END!!! I had been waiting for that race for SO long and the entire day i just enjoyed it and reveled in it. It is your reward for all this self doubt, all these hours, all the neglected parts of your life right now. It is FUN and easy compared to the training. Just trust me on this, ok?? You will all finish, you will all be Ironmen on April 15th!! We will all do it!

Great post. The training is the hardest part. How many times have you all shown up on race day filled with doubt and anxiety and as soon as the gun went off, everything just came together? So shall it be .

Has anyone mapped out the bike or run routes on either the BT route tracker or gmap-pedometer?

I know they have elevation graphs on the IMAZ website but they're not in great detail and in particular I'd like to know the total elevation gain for each.

thanks,

tom

I have mapped out the main stretch of the course on the beeline highway. It is 488 feet of climbing, but will actually be less than that because the map I did has a little of going down the one hill to Shea and back up it which is just past the turnaround on race day.

I ordered the Pro Motion tri sleeves, neoprene socks, and a neoprene hood. I should have them this week... just need to get gloves and I will probably test the cold water at a lake here next weekend.

Did 10 hours of biking and 7 hours of running this week including a 22 mile run today followed by a bike.  two more 20 mile runs in the three weeks then taper time.  I won't be walking the last 6 miles of the course this year!  Anyways...If anyone knows anyone dropping out that has a close hotel/motel let me know.  I'd rather not stay at the motel 6 again this year but the the Best Western had told me they had me on the top of the wait list and they would give me the first cancellation.  apparently they tell me now that they are overbooked and are not keeping a wait list.

Leave request has been in since December! Hotel is booked & tickets finally bought, so there's no backing out now (not that I'd want to).

Touched pretty close to 20h last week, will be about the same this week. Had to lurch the long weekend forwards 1 day thanks to 45mph winds on Saturday, and I decided it wasn't worth the risk to ride in that. Got in 5.5 yesterday, 2.5 hour run today.

This week's long run is 2h55, which is the longest run I have ever done before. A necessary evil, I suppose.

We're down within 6 weeks now folks!

Tri Take Me Away-
You are definitely right about the race being easier than the training. When I did my first marathon in Dec, I cried in the middle of my 18 mi run because it was sooooo hard and I couldn't fathom doing anything more. Although IM AZ is my first IM, I'm sure that it will be amazing, with all the crowd support, we'll all want to relish every molment.

My training is going well. I pushed a 100mi ride on Sat, with 4000 feet of climing and 10-22 mph winds. Talk about SUFFERING! I followed it up on Sun with a 3 hour Spinervals session called "Tough Love". Tough definitely describes it!

The long hours are wearing on me as I'm primarily training alone, but the race is right around the corner. Keep up the work guys, we're almost there!!!!! Less than 6 weeks to go, and a taper is on the horizon!

Gee whiz aren't you going to tell us how many hours of sleep and your nutritional intake as well?  Or isn't that the big secret to being ready for the race.

This week we got an accept on an offer on a house, put our house on the market, and I worked 12 hours on Thursday night.

Some gals from my tri club and I spent the weekend training on the course. We did an 82 mile ride on Saturday. I felt great after the first loop of 41 miles, but the wind really picked up on our second loop and we bailed out. My legs were dead from fighting the wind. Saw lots of people training on the course. Also got yelled and honked at in mean ways a ton. I also rode through a cereal storm. There's a landfill in the area, and a box of cereal blew across the road. A car hit it which ripped the box open and let the bag out, then the next truck hit the bag and cereal flew everywhere and blew into the lane. It was some sort of sugary kid's cereal like honey smacks or something. Rolling through crunchy stickiness was interesting.

Sunday I ran 1 loop of the run course. I've actually seen it all before, since it's kind of a combination of the SOMA and Tempe Oly run courses. Said hello to the farm animals as we passed by.

Did my first century ride today! 100.5 miles. Yep, went over by 1/2 a mile just to make sure. Felt great, so it was a big boost to my mental state. Maybe I will be able to do this thing after all!

Today I did a 100mile/40min. brick. It was very valuable as a learning tool. I pushed too hard in the first 60 miles and faded toward the end because I was chasing a watts goal. Big mistake! Plus it was in the 80's today and I did not account for that with my fluid intake. Needless to say, the run was painful. When I did 90miles/20 min. a few weeks ago, I felt awesome, so today I learned just how important it is to pace yourself, not chase watts, and stay on top of nutrition!! Now the good news...I hit 100 miles in 5:22:31. That is faster than my 90 miler, but lower watts.

A good training day, for sure.

Only five weeks to go, so I'm into the heavy volume weeks.

Last week was a run focus week totalling 7550 yards swimming, 76.9 miles riding, 44.4 miles running.

Saturday morning I did a 500 yard TT after a 2100 yard swim set, and my T-pace was 2:00. I'm happy about that, because although that's still slow it's significantly faster than last year's 2:35. My work on developing a better pull is working...

After 2.5 hours of yardwork Saturday afternoon, I went for a 3 hour, 20 mile run. 9 minute pace, 141 average HR.

Sunday was raining too hard, so I tried a long, easy pace ride on my CompuTrainer, simulating the IMAZ course. Aargh. I can run 3 hours on a treadmill (music or DVD to keep me company), but for some reason easy pace on a bike trainer kills me even with a DVD. I bailed at 2.5 hours and then ran 6 miles on the treadmill at 10 minute pace.

Last week was big:
14000m in the pool
160ish on the bike
51 running

Total: 20h00 or so...

Another big week on tap, with my biggest single day (5h45/45 brick) yet.

Did the Solvang Century over the weekend, great course! Training is going well. I keep checking the IMAZ web page for updates and found this IM video - very motivational! Hope everyone's training is going as planned.

I did the Solvang Century last weekend as well. It was beautiful, but mentally challenging. The wind was between 22-28 mph in a direct headwind (I chose not to draft) for about 40 miles. Then, mile 85 & 90 brought some monster climbs! Over 5000 feet of climbing on the entire course. As if that wasn't enough, I had a retard crash into me and take me down with him at mile 54. I was ok (as was my bike), and I toughed it out, but for some reason a real mentally challenging day for me. It was my 4th 100+ mile ride!

I feel the taper in the horizon!

3 hrs swim (I'm a swim slacker)
11 hrs run
14 hrs bike

Today's efffort is a 6 hour bike and then 2 hour run.

I've come down with a cold & possible larygitis, which is awesome. Have had to scale back a touch this week:

S: 12,000m
B: 8h45
R: only 4h15, which is sad. But put in 50+ miles last week, and next week will be 45-50 again.
