LukeTX04 (Luke)

Story: I watched my wife do triathlons for almost 5 years and always said I would never do one because of the swim. Well, I finally got the bug and started late last season with 2 sprints and fell in love. I struggle a lot with the swim but I am really making improvements. I want to move up to longer course races and I am starting the 2007 season with a 1/2 ironman and will hopefully do IM Arizona in 2008 as my first IM. I am a meeting and event planner and I work part time for a church leading worship for the youth group.

Family: 24 years old. Married to a triathlete, Kylie (kriley on BT), 2 black labs, no kids yet. Live in Houston.

Training: Lately I am training when I have time. I plan to get on a much more strict training plan in January and follow it throughout the season. Will probably do 1 or 2 half ironmans and a handful of sprints in 2007. I might do the new tri101 race also.

Advice: BT is a great community and very supportive. We have met a lot of BT'ers at races and have never been dissapointed. Use the training logs to track your progress and take time to get to know some of the folks behind the keyboards here.

Hey Jeff, that is great! I will be doing the HIM at Lonestar too! Sounds like you definitely have more experience than I do but I can sure motivate! My wife got into tri's after being a swimmer her whole life. She swam for Auburn in college and so that is her strong suit in tri's. She and I differ a lot in triathlon because she is much more of a sprint racer and I love sprints, but I am really more interested in doing some longer course endurance racing.

Looking forward to a great season and getting to meet you in April!

Got room for one more?

It sounds like you & I have similar stories with regard to tri's. My wife has been doing tri's since before we met and I've been a jockstrap for the last couple summers. Prior to this summer my post-college athletic endeavors have consisted of mountain biking, hockey & skiing (gotta love the great white north!!).

My goals are to complete a few sprints this next summer along with a few 5k's in the spring leading up to it. I'd definitely consider the run & bike to be my stronger suits. For all intents & purposes I'm starting from scratch in the pool. If I fell off a boat, I wouldn't drown, but at this point a 500mt OWS seems pretty daunting. My wife swam all through HS, so she's my coach & instructor for that.

Other than that, I'm a recently married 29 yr old financial analyst for an auto supplier (in MI? go figure).

Talk to you later.

Sweet! I've got 2 Jeff's! This is not going to be confusing at all! j/k. So far this is a very interesting group of 3 guys whose wives are the triathletes of the family. We need some more folks to balance this out! We will encourage each other to stay in the pool this year and really improve that in addition to training in the other disciplines. If yall have any questions about anything, post 'em here.

Can I join? I'm new to BT.com and triathlon's in general. I have a friend signed up for the arizona IM in April and he's talked me into getting started in tri's.

I'm 28, 6ft and weight's around 245lbs. Haven't worked out much since i got of the the army in 04, up until recently. I work in the IT dept. for The Methodist Hospital, and go to school part time.

My current goals for next year are to complete a 10k, a sprint, and get my weight down to 200-210.

Howdy! Im joining this group too.

Im a 20 year old college student at Texas A&M whose gearing up for his second full year of tris.  I started doing them a little over a year ago as a way to get back in shape and lose weight.  Well since then Ive lost minimal weight (still at 245) but am in much better shape.  I cant wait to kick off the season with all the stuff Ive got planned including 2 HIMs, collegaite nationals, and starting to dominate the clydesdale division of my sprints thru the t2 (during the run all bets are off ).

Anyways good luck to everybody this off season!

Looking to join with Luke! My story, mother of 3 ages 6,5,1. Story, I was in great shape 2+ yrs ago then got pregnant. I don't do pregnancy well and gained alot of weight and then spent almost another year with that weight. Have gotten back into training and am enjoying it. I hope to complete the Lonestar Sprint in March/April and another in the UP of Michigan in August. My hinderance is I do not have a bike, but am doing lots of spinning in hopes that I was very nice this year and santa will bring me one. Otherwise the tri season will have to wait until the funds are there for a bike - not looking for anything eleborate just something i can pedal for 12+ miles. I run slow as mollasses, but am working on that too - I'm finding as the weight slowly melts off the running is coming along.... swimming is strong though, so I have 1 of 3 down.

Well guys it looks like we have a full group! And the best part is that we have 4 out of 5 Texans! Sorry Jeff, we still love you even though you are not from the greatest state in the country!

First assignment (yeah thats right, I'm giving work on the first day of class!): lets get some goals laid out for training right now, and then some goals for the 2007 season.  Mine would be something like:

Training: Right now I need to finish moving into my house and get my focus back on training. I need to up my mileage and prepare for the Houston 1/2 mary. I want to have a long run the next 3 weeks of 8,9 and 10 miles respectively and then taper. Next week while I am off of work I am planning on at least 1 longish ride of 30-50 miles and some mtn bike rides in the woods (I miss that). I am also going to start getting back in the pool again so I can begin to prepare for the Lonestar 1/2 IM.

2007: I would like to have fun in the 1/2 IM and finish strong. I know that I am not fast at all but I would like to be in good enough shape to finish with a smile. After that I am just going to focus on the sprints and have a good time. I think I have decided that I am not going to race CapTex so I can jockstrap for my lovely wife. If Lonestar goes well I will throw around the idea of possibly doing the Playtri HIM or Ironstar HIM. I am also considering the new trioneoone race in the woodlands that is next november.

As of now this is my plan. Things might change some but not too much. I really look forward to encouraging each of you and hopefully we can all make big improvements in 2007. Also, anyone in the Houston area that wants to get together at any point to train, let me know. If you need help in the pool, I will recruit my wife (former collegiate swimmer/current part time swim coach) to do some coaching. If you have any questions about anything, post them here!

I see, instead of 4 weddings & a funeral, we're 4 Texans and a Bronco (Western Michigan University)

Immediate Goals - Maintain my 3X week running program while mixing in 1-2/week of spinning. Starting the week after Christmas, I'd like to start hitting the pool 1-2/week as well. Beer league hockey finals are Jan 7, so I'm sure I'll be hitting the ice a few times between now & then too.

'07 Goals
-Run a couple 5k's in the late winter/spring.
-Learn actual technique when swimming and build base in that discipline
-Finish 2-3 Sprints
-Build base, experience & confidence for '08 season

STORY: I played college baseball (Im glad I didnt go to A&M jk ) When I got married I started this TRI thing and have loved every second. I completed Ironman CDA 06 12:39. This will be my 4th season!  http://www.veoh.com/videoDetails.html?v=e97779QnjfKkTe

GOALS 07:  Have fun first off, but planed to do 2 or 3 HIM this season.  If I had a goal it would be to do a sub 5:00 HIM. LONESTAR HIM (last year 5:33 and bonked at mile 5 on run), St. Croix, Longhorn, 1o1 (TX)

TRAINING 07:  I need stay consistant with my swim, bike, and RUN.  My swim is not good at all!  My bike each year gets better, and run. Not SWIM it has been getting worse every year.

ACCOUNTABLE: for daily updating my logs, make sure I am working hard towards my Triathlon goals.  Any advise on SWIMMING will be helpful.

FAMILY:  just turned 26.  I have an awesome Wife "SARAH" she became an Ironman this year IMFL, no baby's, no dogs, we are young and love to travel.

Sorry, missed my homework for the first night. I just realized I'm the only women here... hmmm, i should have lots of motivation from you gents to keep up with you.

My goal for now and in 2007: continue with my training program 20 week training program w/ 3disciplines - 3x a week (the program from BT) loose 20 pounds by Lonestar, and another 20 by end of summer (August), complete 2 tri's this summer: Lonestar and also one in Michigan.

Like I said before, I need the bike first before I can complete my goal of 2 tri's this summer. working on santa.... any ideas where to go and look fro a bike??? I'm in NW houston....

It all depends on your budget. How tall are you? I ask because the bike that I do tri's on is my wife's old road bike and it is a little bit small for me. It is a 50cm Trek 1000. Nothing fancy. If it fits you though, since I am doing the 1/2 IM at Lonestar the next day you would be more than welcome to ride it in the sprint.

'07 Goals: I would like to finish both of my HIMs in under 7 hours, not finish DFL at nationals, and begin placing in some of the smaller local sprints. I also want to start eating much better and train consistantly.

As for a bike shop in the Houston area I would recommend Bay Area Schwinn.  Its not NW but the owner is an ol 'ag who generally gives deals to other ags.  He sponsors the A&M tri team so if your not a former student then tell him you heard about the shop from someone on the A&M tri team and he may give you a good deal too.  Oh and they are not just schwinn dealers, they have everything except trek (my friends roomate just got a soloist from there).

Brooks, thanks for the info on Bay Area Schwinn. I just gave them a call and they are super nice. Have some really great deals too! Looks like I might be giving them some business in the future. Even though they are no where near me, service makes a big difference and I have been less than impressed with what I have gotten at Bike Barn. I bought my mtn bike there and I love the bike but the service was not the best.

Hey team Luke: Got a question for everyone.

I am struggling with my swimming. Specifically i have horrible shoulders - short version is I do not a proper shoulder joint and I dislocate and impinge regularly. I am working with the YMCA retention lady - she does IM's - and I am doing light weights/thera band trying to strengthen the surrounding muscles, but when I swim, OMG do they hurt. If I swam 400yds freestyle I'd be unable to much else for a week or so recovering and remember I have a 28lb. baby to tote around with me. I am alternating 50 free/50 breast plus kicking and bilateral breathing (that's another issue for help but another day).... trying to make sure my shoulders aren't impinging or dislocating - yes I can dislocate just by swimming. I do not lift on days I swim and I only lift/thera band 2x a week.

questions is: realistically for the OW swims what is the distance you'll actuallty swim taking into account meandering and such? Need to have better idea of what I need to work up to.
