Sorry I did not see your question sooner! To answer your question, I honestly dont know. The method which you are using to swim given that you are switching up free/breast, you would stand a better shot at not getting off course because you will be sighting often in switching strokes, resting, etc. I would think you could probably add an extra 50 meters by getting off course and things. If you really pay attention though, you should be able to stay on course. I have seen races where the swim ended up being a little longer than advertised so be sure to be able to cover the distance plus a little bit comfortably. Practice sighting when you are swimming in the pool. This is really hard for me!

I've been practicing sighting while swimming free and also working on the bi-lateral thing... difficult to do since I've been breathing on the Left for 30+ years... but it's coming... I feel very comfortable with the swim but know OWS and pool swimming are very different so I want to be over prepared with the distance required!

Happy weekend to everyone!

That is an excellent mode of thinking. Be over prepared! OWS is a whole nother ballgame and I hope that this season I can get it figured out!

I know it doesn't fit into the traditional run/bike/swim training, but holy crap did my hockey game last night kick my a$$. A 3-2 win in the championship game that came down to the wire with my team having a short bench. I'll count that as my interval training, 45sec - 2 min. of sprinting with 1 min of rest, all while balancing, stick-handling, some pushing & shoving. I haven't been this sore after a game in a while.

I've read a bunch of speed skaters train on bikes in the off season, so is it safe to assume it works the other way as well? Even if it doesn't, you still have to love the chance for some good team competition, especially with a couple "bevvies" waiting in the locker room after.

I think hockey is probably excellent cross training. It is a great sport to get your HR elevated and will definitely require prolonged sustained energy. Glad you had a great game!

Good idea Pete! It is COLD out there! I guess I am not going to start training specifically for Lonestar 1/2 IM since the 1/2 mary is over. I did not meet my goal but I had a great time and I was not far off. I really need to spend a LOT of time in the water and in the saddle now!

From what I hear it is going to be needed! I don't have one though so I might end up renting one. We shall see as we get a little closer.

I just checked and the avg water temp is 72 according to the race website. I don't know that you would *have* to have a wetsuit in that but it would probably be nice.

Whats the cutoff for water temp that they don't allow wetsuits isn't it in the mid-to-low 70's? If the 72 degree water is cold, what is it normally? All our water's frozen around here. That's cold.

My wife did a sprint tri 2 yrs ago that had the swim in Lake Michigan. In the late summer, the big lake can get up to 72-75 degrees if there's a stretch of warm sunny weather, but one good storm and it's back into the 50's. We were watching lake temp for the weeks leading up to her race, holding in the low 70's. Sure enough, 2 days before the race, we get a nice T-storm that flips the lake and her race was in 52 degree water, and all we had for her was a wakeboarding wetsuit top. Good thing the transition area was a good 1/2 mile from the lake.

I believe that usat rules are <78 is wetsuit legal.  If the water doesnt feels a little warm then you get to wear your wetsuit

I think that 72 is swimmable without a wetsuit. Kylie (my wife who swam competitively her whole life) told me the other day that the perfect temp for a race pool was about 74 and it is not unusual to have 72 in a race pool. I would more rather have a wetsuit but at the present time I dont have one so we will see what happens.

Where is everyone??? Time to check in! How is the training going? Any new goals? How is life in general?

Everything is going pretty well here. I finished the Houston 1/2 mary and now I am focusing on training for the Lonestar 1/2 IM. I have just under 10 weeks and a lot to do. I am jumping into the 1/2 IM training plan from here and have a lot of cycling to do this week. My knee is a little sore still so I am going to focus on riding and swimming this week and next. I really need to start spending a LOT of time in the water!

Hope everything is going well!

Wow, 1/2 Mary's & IM's, and I'm just trying to make it a few laps across the pool. The swim is definitely my focal point at the moment. I'm sick of my treadmill and we have a foot of snow on the ground at the moment up here.

House projects are done for a while, we just got done gutting a room and refinishing floors, peeling wallpaper, painting and electrical, so that took a bit of time over the last couple weeks.

Hockey's on a regular schedule again, so the workouts should be getting longer and more regular. At this point, I just can't wait for the weather to break up here so I can get outside for running & biking. Treadmills & exercise bikes just don't cut it.

Well, I have dropped a few pounds and my focus right now is continued weight loss and working on building my endurance and strength in all 3 events. The only problem is I don't have a reliable place to swim. I was hoping to do the Sprint Tri in Galveston in April, but unless i can find a place to swim, I won't be ready by then.

Right now I am working on kicking on the bike, and building back up my swimming after a 2 month layoff.  I am trying to break 4 hours at the lonestar HIM Aquabike.  I also need to start lowly building up my run again so that I can be ready to not finish DFL at collegaite nationals on Apr 21.

Just checking in guys! How is the training going? Any new goals? Hows life?

Life here is good. Training has been sparatic lately but I think I am improving. I am still taking it easy on my knee but it seems to be getting better. I think I am about to buy a new bike and that is exciting! No more road bike that is WAY too small.

It's tough to stay motivated when I'm staring at 2 ft of snow on the ground right now and every 15 minutes it seems I have to go outside to shovel the driveway (why did we buy that Mazda 6 for my wife again?).

My other issue at the moment is that my gym options are up in the air for the time being. For years my company operated a very nice private facility (25yd pool, b-ball court, 3 rackeball courts, 5 tennis, weights & cardio) that was a hold-over from when my division was privately held. For a long time the place was free, and 2 yrs ago they changed to $25 a month, still awesome for what we were getting. Within the last 2 months, the powers that be way up high in the company decided to sell the place, a decision full of politics and other fun stuff. The company that bought the place closed it down for a month to renovate & swap equipment out. When they're through, it's supposed to be gorgeous & state of the art. And consequently our rates would go up significantly.

Question: Do you guys belong to gyms? If so what do you pay for your membership & what does that get you?

Bummer about your membership man! My wife an I belong to the gym at our church and for both of us it is only 35 a month. They have just about everything except a pool and it is really nice. I have a membership to the pool & aquatic center (dad's club) where my wife coaches part time and I think it is around 30 bucks a month also. I usually lift weights there or run in the neighborhood so really the church gym membership is pretty useless. I like it though if I want to go play raquetball or if we work out early in the morning at dad's club to swim, we would go to the church to get ready for work because it is much nicer and cleaner.

How the weather cooperates for you!
