I think that instead of having a specific distance goal this month, I'm going to focus on getting workouts in.  It's been a challenge lately.

Swim: 1x per week
Bike: 3x per week
Run: 2x per week
Core: 2x per week

Biking is going to be my focus this month because I have two challenging rides scheduled for next month. 

Happy training in May!!

I haven't had a good end to the month, and have had problem getting into a training rhythym so far this year.

Unfortunately I was sick with a head cold and had no energy last week and work has really been taking too much time. That coupled with not having a defined plan, and I have had trouble hitting workouts lately.

Doubly unfortunately, work is taking me to the desert in a few weeks for a few weeks, and I am unsure what I will be able to do then. So I am not sure what to put as goals for this month.

I am probably just going to try and get in a bunch of workouts this month and then start a full fledged plan from the site starting in June after I get back.

I started with a cardiovascular level of 0 and have worked myself up somewhat, have lost most of my excess fat, and am feeling great. However, I want to really continue my fitness and hope to complete a triathlon in the near future, and I am focused and want to continue to that goal. If only silly life wouldn't interfere.

Good luck on everyone's goals this month!

Ok, so I have my first race on Sunday. This will be my first endurance race attendance or running ever! So I am just wondering if anyone here has any words of wisdom on breakfast/diet (It is listed to start at 6:45), stuff to bring, how things tend to work that you didn't expect, or any other tidbits of information to make it less of a surprise.

I wish that I was at a higher level of fitness for this, but I am keeping my spirits and motivation high. I am going in to complete it, and am going to try and tax myself but not kill myself.

However, I have no real idea what to expect and am a little nervous.

And since you all are race experienced, I was hoping you might have a few insights.

It is specific for the event but you still might find it usefull at least for your first tri.

Edit: I just re-read the list and 'bunnyhug' = 'hooded sweatshirt' for all you non-Sask. people.

********I couldn't eat too much before my races. But be careful! I found out that by not eating I really brought my level down when I really needed it--into the run. I would recommend caffeine and carbs. (Actually that is what I read)

Looks like the mentor program is going to start again.  I'm wondering what everyone would like to do.  Would you like to keep our group open and maybe add a few more people?  Or, do you all feel sufficiently "mentored"?  I'm game for either one.

OMG - I went on my first 25 mile ride last night - Holy Carp my legs are dead today!  LOL!  Somehow, a jump from 2 10 milers to a 25 was NOT the best thing for my legs.  They're not sore, they're just dead.  I *might* be able to run tomorrow.  LOL!

That happened to me when I went from 25 milers to a 40 in one day. OMG I had trouble sitting or just sitting on the toilet. Too funny... it gets better.

I am almost to my first tri of the season. OMG.. today my boyfriend and I went to bike the bike course. Wow. The hills on it are deadly, especially the first one. I am so tired now. Of course if I didn't stay up all night and then do a long run, I might feel better now.

Anyway, I am nervous about this one. The hills are all over the place. The first hill hits you 1/2 mile into the ride, and it is a biggie. I will be at the lowest speed just to stay on the bike. I hope (REALLY HOPE) that I don't walk. I can already see many having to do so.

When we went on the course today, the wind was howling. Another factor that would blow my race. I long for the easy ride, like in Philly. This will be a tough one next week.

How is everyone doing???

It sounds like the bike course is a challenge.  It would be nice to have to walk, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.  I had to walk up two hills during my Olympic tri.  I was worried about falling and I decided it would be easier to walk up.  How much longer do you have to prepare before the tri?

I've been really tired lately.  I'm a little worried because I have my MS150 ride coming up in two weeks and I haven't been riding as much as I would like lately.  I'm going to try to get in some more rides this week and hope that it will help before the ride.

It sounds like everyone wants to keep going with the group, so that's what we'll do.  I was actually concerned that they were going to close down this forum once they started the new program, but it doesn't look like that's the case.

Well, I'm thinking I'm going to bite the bullet and go for a marathon this year.  I will attempt the KC Marathon on October 20th.  I ran the half mary last year in 2:12:43.  I will obvious have to increase very gently, but I think I can do it.  My question to you: what would you do?  Since I have (hopefully) many years of running/tri-ing ahead of me, there's no real reason to rush in to things; should I:

  1. go for it!
  2. do the half mary b/c my leg still needs time to fully and completely recover - a marathon training program may not be the smartest move

My doctor doens't have an opinion other than be careful, obey the 10% rule of volume increase, and listen very carefully to my body.  What do you guys think?

I don't think it's too crazy.  Most of the full marathon training plans are geared towards people of your ability and it wouldn't be too late to start one.  I'm running the Marine Corps Marathon the week after yours and I've done a few half-marathons.  I'm going to start using this training plan next month - it's 18 weeks:

Sorry about my delay in answering. My TRI is Saturday. I have been busy with work, kid, and training. (not necessarily in that order)

I am both excited and nervous for my first TRI of the season. Once I get past this one the others should fall in place.

Well the weekend went okay. The race was pretty good start to the season. I would have liked the times to be much lower, but I am moving along. There were some nasty hills on the course, so I figure I got off decent with my times.

Race one... come and gone. On I go for more workouts.

It took me an entire day to get my body back from exhaustion. I forgot on how tired a race can make you feel. But I absolutely love it!

How is everyone's Memorial Day weekend?

We had a pretty good weekend.  We didn't do a whole lot.    I worked at the store Saturday and Sunday, so yesterday (monday) I didn't do much of anything!  I was feeling pretty lazy.  Now I have 4 days until my first race of the season - Hospital Hill 10k.  I'm feeling good about it, so we'll see what happens.
