Sorry to disappoint, but I didn't finish the Horribly Hilly ride on Saturday.  I fell around mile 8 and cut up my legs and twisted my knee.  I didn't know about the knee part until I tried to keep riding and had shooting pain under my knee cap.  I made it about halfway before I had to quit.  I was really worried about tearing one of the ligaments in my knee.  I think something is sprained, so I'm going to take it easy for a few days.  I did post a picture of my leg in my album.  It doesn't look too bad there.  Now there are lots of bruises all around the scratches.  Yuck.  I still had a good time, just disappointed I couldn't finish.  I'm working on finishing up my race report.  I should have that posted today or tomorrow.

Hope everyone else had a better weekend than me!

Ouch is right! The bruises and cuts will heal pretty quick, but I hope your knee will do the same. Sorry you didn't complete it, but I am sure you made the right call.

I had a pretty darn good weekend of training. I have historically not been good about training on the weekend, but I got good, long workouts on both Saturday and Sunday. I totally credit my wife for pushing and enabling me to get out there. It can be hard to do, especially as the afternoon nears to an end.

We also made it to a movie for the first time in months, which was very exciting.

Great work this weekend Dave!  Training AND a date with your wife - can't beat that!  My wife's b-day was on Saturday, so we tried out a fancy Italian restaurant we haven't been to yet, and it was well worth it!  It was horribly expensive (for us), but the food was the best I've had when it comes to Italian.

Sounds like a great weekend!  It's great that your wife is pushing you to train.  That's really helpful when you are on the fence between working out and not.

I'm really sorry that your race got canceled.  I'm sure it's for the best.  I definitely understand the feeling disappointed because it was canceled.  I guess it's important to remember that we're safe and we'll be able to go out another day.

Thanks, Jen.  I didn't have time yet to post here.  I was going to do it this morning, but you beat me to it. 

Here's the coolest part of the whole day for me yesterday: I beat the guy with the most expensive bike there - a Specialized Elite Triple with race wheels. 

Anyway, it was a great experience and I know I have to work on three things:

  1. more bricks
  2. more running
  3. more cycling

I'll probably swim less as a result of that, but with my "A" race in just 6 weeks, I need to improve my ability to run well after I ride.  I'm also going to by toe clips for my bike (not feeling ready for clipless yet), so hopefully that will help my bike time a bit (plus riding lots).

Thank you for all your support along the way to here.  It's been a blast and I can't wait for the next one!

Hey all,

I haven't been on the blog in a while, sorry. Life and great weather has been getting in my way. I went to a conference in Atlanta last week. Took advantage of their fitness room, but it wasn't an even substitute for doing the real thing. At least I was still working out.

Lately it seems that all the summer things to do have gotten in my way for workouts. I have the Philly Women's Tri coming up this weekend (July 8). So the next few days are hard workouts until Thursday.

Saturday I completed my first ever 10k race. Wow did I surprise myself. I think I might like the longer distance running than the 5ks. After the first few miles I was in the zone and actually sped up. I don't do that for the 5ks. I am still running a 10 minute mile but getting more comfortable with the actual running thing.

Today I am doing a bike-swim-bike brick. Brick 7/8 miles to the YMCA, swim for an hour and bike back. Should be a good workout with all the wind outside.

How is everyone?? Congrats Robert on your first tri. When is your next one???

I think I like the longer runs, too.  Gives you more time to get warmed up and get into a rhythm. I feel like 5ks are over way too quickly.  I have a feeling I'm going to like the longer tri distances more, too, for that reason.

Having only ran one 10k, it's a tough call to make, but I think I like 10's more than 5's.  They're long enough to be somewhat tough, but short enough that I can actually "race" a ilttle.  I'm with you, Jen - i think I'll like the longer distance tris better b/c I'll have more time on the run to recover from the bike.  The last half mile of the run on Saturday was actually starting to feel ok.  Go figure.

Hey group;
Thanks for the kind words from my last disappointing race.  I'm going to try the Olympic distance again this weekend, so hopefully this weekend will cooperate.

Next race in August 18 - sprint tri.  I am hoping for a 1:30 finish or better.  I have lots of work to do on the bike and run, probably will see a big drop in time spent training for the swim, but since the tri has only a 300 yard swim, I'm not too concerned.  1-2 trips to the pool a week should be fine.  I want a 27:00 or better split on the run, and at least a 40:00 or better on the bike.  (300 yard swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run).  Lots to work on!!!

Kelli and Erin both did triathlons over the weekend!  Great job, ladies!!  Extra credit to Erin for stopping to help her injured friend during the bike.  She's got good race karma.

Well, now I've gone and done it: I registered for my next tri.  It's August 18 and is a 300 yard swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run.  I'm hoping to go 1:30.00 or better, especially now that I have my cycling shoes.  I have one month to train, and so far, I've been please with what I've done this month.

Make sure you practice a lot with the clipless pedals - getting in and out.  I think it's probably worth it to use them.  I felt like I was a lot faster once I started using the clipless, but they can be a little problematic to get in and out of.  Being under pressure just makes it worse.  I had a really hard time clipping in during my last tri - of course it was right in front of the tri club taking pictures.

On the first day of using my pedals I was at a bike camp.  I survived the entire day, but as we were on the way back to the parking lot we stopped at a long light, I was standing there with only one foot uncliped, leaned the other way and took out the person beside me, so embarassing but no injuries.  A few weeks later I was taken down by someone else in the same fashion, creating a karmatic balance in the bicycle universe.

Also, if you're having problems unclipping, your cleats on your shoes may need adjusting.  A few times I was having trobles because my cleats were too loose.  Good luck, and learn from your falls.
