Hey everyone! I hope everyone is feeling good.

Very nicely done on the swim Terry. Hard work paying off sure feels good, doesn't it?

LeaYag - 2007-03-15 9:17 PM Hopefully the weather will be a little nicer there than in NJ so I can get some outdoor runs in! 75 degrees today and 30 degrees tomorrow..... CRAZY!!!!! Have a good weekend everyone! Lea

I'm jealous that you're going to be In South Carolina. The weather is pretty freaky here in NY too: 4 degrees last Friday, 75 degrees Wednesday, foot and a half of snow this Friday and into Saturday morning. The sun came out so the roads should be OK to ride on Sunday. Have a fun trip!

And Kelly, good luck and have lots of fun in your race on Sunday!!!

Anthony

Hi everyone. I hope you are all feeling good and having fun. It looks like Spring is here to stay.

So Cindy, how did your bike shopping go?  And Terry, I am looking forward to pics of your new bike. New bikes are very exciting. I am going to the LBS this week to see if I can get some clip-on aerobars that work with me and my road bike, but I sure wish I were getting a new bike. If any of you have any ideas of how I could explain buying another bike to my wife, please let me know

Subject: Countdown to first race!

Ok, everyone! As Anthony said, spring is here! That means the race season is fast approaching! When is your first race? Mine is June 3rd. The web site for the race has a handy little countdown ticker, so as of right now, it's 66 days, 21 hours, 19 minutes and 45 seconds until my first race of the year.

How about everyone else? Any questions? Problem? Issues?

I was so afraid on my first swim but the wetsuit helps a little to keep you buoyant. The water was so disgusting, muddy, tree stumps and it smelled real bad, I wouldn't put my face in for the first half. I ended up doing the breast stroke. If you get winded just do the breast stroke or go to your back, just don't give up because you will ace the rest of the race!

Hi Terry,

I was actually trying to figure out the kick thing when I was doing my swim warm up on Friday. The thing that made my kick most ineffective when I was doing freestyle was having my feet too deep in the water. Could that be your issue by any chance? If so, try elongating and holding your core tight so that your feet are higher in the water. My swim coach used to tell us that the water above our feet should look like it's boiling.

Am an not a qualified coach, but that's my trial and error suggestion.

Subject: Off to Florida!

Hi everyone!

I'm off to Florida this morning, so I won't be around much (if a all) this week. My parents have internet access but it's dial-up, so I'm not sure I'll have the patience to use it!

Have a fantastic week and I expect all of you to make up the bike miles I won't be able to get in since my bike isn't making the trip (especially you, Terry, with the new wheels!).

Hi everyone!

Oh man, Terry, that bike is beautiful!!! I'll bet that pearl white looks even better in real life. It looks really fast, too. Good luck, have fun, and ride lots.

Have a good trip, Kelly.

Hope everyone is getting out and enjoying the beautiful Spring weather.

Hi again,

Glad to see you found the thread. You're welcome to join this group if you'd like. I think a couple of our original members have been away for a while, so there's plenty of room. Tell us a bit about yourself! Any planned races?

Subject: Finally back in the swing of things...

Hi everyone,

I'm back from gloriously sunny Florida and am finally getting back to normal life. We had a great time and I even did a bit of running while we were there. It's so nice to run outside without sixteen layers on!

I know that while I was gone, ROBIN (1 Foot The Other) did her first tri and did a great job! WOO HOO! Congratulations Robin!

Also, a new member is probably joining us--Josh (jakman). Our group is advertised as full, but there's always room for one more! Welcome Josh!

Any big news for anyone else?

Hi everyone!

I'm Josh, and I'm a 19 year old college student living in Washington DC. I really am so glad I found this group! I am completely new to the sport, and am hoping to run an olympic race at the end of the summer. I was a high school basketball and tennis player, so I can run. Swimming, I think, will be the toughest part for me. ANyway, thanks again for letting me join, and hope to talk to everyone soon.

hello all

I have been kind of "lazy" with my loging lately to much going on around here my wife found out she has plantar fasciitis in her right foot, so her season done before it even started.Than I have been strugling with my swimming lately time to get my focus back I ordered somethings from total immersion to help with the swim thing. The good news though I feel that I can still do my dualathlon in may, than hope my swimming improves so I can do a tri a little later in the year.

Hi everyone. I have had an awful week of little training. My kids have spring break so I have not had time to swim and very little time to train. But I guess it couldn't have happened at a better time considering I have these painful shin splints. I have been icing a couple of times a day and doing a lot of stretching. They are definitely feeling better than they were but they are holding me back. I will probably have to back out of my duathlon on the 21st unless I go and just do the bike portion. I don't think a 10k run is in the near future for me. I need to save it for my first tri of the season (4/29). Hopefully the weather will warm up a little. I am not sure what I will do if it is still in the 40's here. I don't want to wimp out but I don't think the shock of 45 degree water will do it for me.

Congrats on your race Robin and also to Terry on the new bike, very nice. I see a new bike in my future, just have to convince the husband!

Hi everyone. Boy oh boy, Lea with shin splints, Kelly with ITB, and Terry's wife with PF. I hope you all get better soon. I wish I had some words of wisdom, but I've never had any of those. The only injury I've ever had was achilles tendinitis, and that got better with careful training and stretching and a little bit of time.

My training is going well, I just wish it would get a little warmer because I'm getting a little tired of having to put on so many layers. I swear, it takes like 20 minutes just to get dressed for a bike ride!

I'm trying to get my race schedule set for this year, and I'm pretty much set. I'm thinking of doing the same race as Lea on 4/29, but it's a 2 and a half hour drive. I don't mind the drive, but it will mean missing a lot of family time on a Sunday, so I haven't decided for sure yet.

Welcome to the group, Josh. My oldest son is a 19 year old college student, but he has no interest in tris unfortunately.

Anthony

jakman - 2007-04-10 12:14 PM I was a high school basketball and tennis player, so I can run. Swimming, I think, will be the toughest part for me.

I played tennis in high school too (a thousand years ago), but I can't run worth a darn. Of course, I wasn't necessarily all that good at tennis in high school...

After 17 sprint races, I'm finally upgrading to an olympic this year, so we'll both be doing our first in late summer. Mine is August 19th.

There's a new article on this site today about beginner swim workouts that you should checkout: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1154

What kind of pool access do you have? Are you using one of the awesome free training plans on this site? They are great for a starting point. I don't follow mine religiously (primarily because I just can't run as much as the plan calls for), but they are an excellent guide.

Sorry to hear about your wife's PF! That's too bad. And also sorry that the swimming still isn't going as well as you'd like. I hope the TI thing you ordered helps. Also, there are a few new swimming articles on BT today that look pretty good.

You're so good to get outside and bike. I totally wimp out and am still on the trainer.

We're just a wreck in this group! Sorry the shins aren't cooperating. I think it's wise of you to skip the du and rest the shins. I'm skipping two running races I usually do in the spring because of my IT band so that it'll be good to go for my first tri.
